  1. Ok, cool. How about this revised version ?
  2. I wanted to say something, but...what's the use. "Purists", my ass. I'll leave you with a purist Picard instead and hit ignore on this self-convincing exercise. ............................................________ ....................................,.-'"...................``~., .............................,.-"..................................."-., .........................,/...............................................":, .....................,?......................................................, .................../...........................................................,} ................./......................................................,:`^`..} .............../...................................................,:"........./ ..............?.....__.........................................:`.........../ ............./__.(....."~-,_..............................,:`........../ .........../(_...."~,_........"~,_....................,:`........_/ ..........{.._$;_......"=,_......."-,_.......,.-~-,},.~";/....} ...........((.....*~_......."=-._......";,,./`..../"............../ ...,,,___.`~,......"~.,....................`.....}............../ ............(....`=-,,.......`........................(......;_,,-" ............/.`~,......`-...................................../ .............`~.*-,.....................................|,./.....,__ ,,_..........}.>-._...................................|..............`=~-, .....`=~-,__......`,................................. ...................`=~-,,.,............................... ................................`:,,...........................`..............__ .....................................`=-,...................,%`>--==`` ........................................_..........._,-%.......` ...................................,
  3. No, not everyone But yeah, the power of net-based groupthink can seem overwhelming, a sad side-effect of this medium. Trinitrons are of course very good, but honestly, I suppose any non-HD set from a reputable manufacturer will do the trick. Sanyo, Toshiba, Panasonic, JVC and so on. IMO the differences between them regarding colours and such are minuscule and also often down to personal preference and settings tweaking. For example the RGB Trinitron colour does not look as vibrant as the one you can control on lesser inputs or other sets. It may be more "proper" one, but still. Overall, I don't think it's something worth dwelling on too much because you will just keep getting your head turned instead of enjoying the games. I'm basically repeating what I said the last time but...yeah. Ask about inputs, S-Video to RGB are preferred but contrary to what most "experts" will say composite is perfectly workable too, it can actually benefit some games. Try to test before you buy if possible. Or, just gamble if the price/effort is low. Most of all, have fun and do not read/think about tech specs too much! I've just moved to another country for a few months, I put an ad up, and within a week I got 2 Trinitrons (29"/21"), delivered to my 1st floor flat for about 20$ and an offer for another 24" one (considering getting it and putting in storage). It's all still possible, but not for many more years, so...
  4. Yeah, sure but I still believe there is a market for a properly executed pre-made one. So far, all the attempt have fallen flat, not helped by the makers unrealistic promises, overreaching and some downright hubris, like in this case.
  5. Sounds great, but what about software? Is it compatible with something or will rely on open source/homebrew scene?
  6. No. This is a text based forum and it takes minimal effort to write a sentence or three.
  7. Looking good. It always puzzles me when some folk turn up their noses and say how "ugly" CRTs are, design wise. Admittedly the latest sets from the 2000s, especially the plasticky, silvery ones are rather bland, but the older ones can be quite beautiful, in an electro-punk kind of way.
  8. Bungie used to make groundbreaking games. Now I read how D2 is being pimped for under 6$, so maybe you'll get hooked and splash on the required DLC. Desperate times.

Might as well put the Triple A games on smartphones and skip consoles altogether... ;(

  9. So, it looks like photocopier, but that's ok. I'm all up for unusual design. I'd like however to know what does this thing do. I'm just a casual lurker, not familiar with your previous projects or plans. Is the pre-show embargo still on?
  10. I agree on principle, but I think that in this particular case keepdreamin is referring to flaws in those more modern HD/widescreen CRT sets which make it unsuitable for 240p gaming, at least vs non HD 4:3 CRT sets. That is factually correct. Though, you may still prefer it to an LCD if you don't care about scanlines or want to fiddle with the OSSC - even so, it could be tricky. I did consider getting one back in the day for the 480p games (and maybe films) which some 6th gen consoles could display. But I didn't have space to spare, having a big ol' Trinitron already..., you need a man cave for both. Maybe one day. Regardless, I think it'd be nice if this thread could be kept argument free, just to celebrate the CRT tech and show off your sets' n all.
  11. Header, OP, a reply - and I still don't know what game it is.
  12. Ok, if we're getting the "Halo/FF7 = overrated" posts, it's a sure sign that some fresh VCS news are needed badly.
  13. So, I like to read about science from time to time. There's some good news for VCS backers: they're not alone! https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2018/07/180713111925.htm
  14. Funny, because despite trying countless mods and enchancements for the FPS games from this heady era, I'll still rather play the originals, if it was down to a binary choice (regarding the fx changes at least). I totally respect the modders' skill, effort and inventiveness, and these versions sure can be fun to play with - but I guess I'm just allergic to absolute statements such as the "there is absolutely no going back..." one. And, it has zilch to do with nostalgia. I just like the old style, is all
  15. The Ferrari comparison is not very good because best-PC-for-the-money in many cases is either an overkilll - a game will max out performance wise at lower specs - or the game is unoptimized and no matter how many teraflops you throw at it, it will run like a dog.
  16. I do check some ebay listings as a first port of call of course, and it mostly reflects the items value - but what about some inflated bubbles? I've read stuff about obsessive speculectors who can raise prices by conducting orchestrated actions, buyouts or campaigns. Does that actually happen? Apart from obvious scalping such as Pier Solar or SNES Classic.
  17. Guess this would be the place for the "not sure if" Fry meme.
  18. I'm not so sure anymore. My last console was PS3 but even then it was polluted by faffing with logins, stores and the insufferable updates. Most likely this is even worse now. The old switch on/put the game in/play simplicity of the old-gen that I really appreciated (even though I am a PC head through and through) is not there anymore.
  19. The tapes ran at the same speed, the files were somehow compressed and took less space on tape. Mind you I'm not sure it's the same method 80s_Atari_Guy mentions. Ours required a hardware add which you put on the expansion bus. I tried to look it up but couldn't find any examples. Perhaps it was some real DIY stuff, exclusive to Poland?
  20. Throw in folk who buy Bose speakers, Monster cables etc and I'm sure some cute Venn diagram could be drawn here.
  21. I always wanted to like Descent but I'm to spatially challenged to master this kind of gameplay. Glad to see a de(s)cent follow up made and released nevertheless.

  23. I mostly use the "virtualization" for practical reasons, but also keep a real retro machine or two going whenever possible. Like pacman000 said, there's something about real hardware I do appreciate greatly. I have respect for it and its resilience and I'm always amazed something still works after all these years in this crazy, volatile world. Old design is uber cute, some things are still impossible to emulate and so on. As kids say these days "because reasons". One of the most curious things I find about this forum is this black & white divide conflict that seems to be going on, between the "real"/"soulless" camps with some true fire & brimstone proselytizing from both sides. But, for why? Why does this have to be such a binary choice? Just use both things, both have perfectly valid reasons going for them. Or, use one, but let others stick with their choice. This really is no "we're right" kinda issue.
  24. I'm just about to pick up a 24" Trinitron for about 30$. Reading through these learned squabbles is great fun
  25. We had external "Turbo" add ons...these were very popular at some point. I'm not sure about technical side of it though, perhaps it was software in hardware form. It was not even as much about shortening the loading times but the fact that you could squeeze 2-3 times as much programs on a tape, thus extending your library (we were poor and more quality tapes rather dear) I remember this method being hit and miss though, rather unreliable. As for Sandybridge, my i7 2600k (overclocked to 4.2 Ghz with a simple BIOS value change and a basic Coolermaster) was a source of endless glee when compared to the newer, much more pricey processors since it still managed to stay ridiculously close to them in benchmarks. The money saved allowed me to combine it with a GTX 1080 and handle anything in 1080p >60fps. That's what I love about PC building - if you look well enough there always seems to be some superb component with decent price and killer performance - the Sandy line, 780 Ti, some Gigabyte MBs, AOC G-sync monitors and so on.
