Internal Atari email about Crystal Castles & Millipede (
Stella'sGhost replied to Scott Stilphen's topic in Atari 2600
Interesting. The stupid thing is that this kind o"rush to market" mentality is still going on. Where I worked over the summer doing CBT's, for Microsoft none the less, we had a meeting one day, turns out our bosses wanted 40 courses done in about 2 months. (It takes 2 weeks just to do one). The lot of us developers just just looked at each other and thought, WHAA???? Are you guys crazy?? What ever happend to Quality Assurance??...Yeah, we can finish them, they just won't work.... -
When I was a kid I thought the "statue of imitations" was some kind of clone device.

And your second post was a reply to your own post!! Good start! .....and yes, many posts here are often doubles or triples or what have you due to the size of these forums, who cares about that, its' all about having fun anyways!

Nice collection, especially like all those boxes. Boxes are hard to find, let me put it this way, around here I've never seen a box in the wild. I have alot of games but hardly any boxes.
-
I had never heard of this game until last year. I did like the smurfs when I was young. I got this game last year and it's lame but cute. Now smurf off you smurfing smurf.

I try not to think about them. I dated one once and it was a bad scene man...bad.

What's with that huge font? Is this auction for the hard of seeing? Nice clear picture too. This thread should be in the Ebay section donut head.

Is it a sin to love classic gaming but not like the 2600
Stella'sGhost replied to RangerG's topic in Atari 2600
don't sell them. 20 years from now you are going to wake up one day and suddenly pine for those old useless games and where on earth are you going to find them then eh???? -
I asked the same question 10 years ago... A special edition console would be so cool, it would help revitalize retro gaming even more, but really I don't think Atari has any future, its just a name now riding on past glories. It would take a visionary and someone who really cared to do something like bringing Atari back to life again in a real world market where you could actually buy 2600 units in stores again and play old and new games, perhaps on newer, smaller carts or just the same size carts.. whatever the case, it seems like a nostalgic dream that died over 10 years ago....never to return, just like Colecovision, Intellivision, Emerson, Bally, Fairchild, TI, Tandy, commodore.... they have been replaced by Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft, as well as by PC's... however of all those systems, only Ninteno, Sega and Atari exist in any shape or form from the 80's, so that's saying something positive. (Nintendo will probably still be here in the year 2460, hell its already over 100 years old.) I think Atari is gaining in popularity again, slowly but it is, sites like this prove it, and people are more aware now of past technology and others who grew up with Atari are now in a position to collect games again and start to widen the appeal of the retro game thing..... which is really cool.

I think this is a stupid idea. Do you know how long it took me to find my games???? The time and effort it took?? What's the fun in someone just giving you stuff?? No way I'm giving anyone anything, trade yes, to a very good friend I'd give some away ...... Contests are a better idea.

I love those old tapes, turn it up real loud!

This is true, it is boring but at least its usually new collectors who complain, I don't give a rats behind anymore, I just buy what I want at what price I want, like most of us. But it doesn't bother me to read about it, complaints are all part of starting out.....

Hey peeps, check this out this silly game demo I wrote this weekend. http://www.geocities.com/neongraphix/orbwars.htm you need shockwave to run it, its a free download if you don't have it. ...

Well, all these points are good but I think in the end, I would pay more for even a "common" cart because depending on where you live in the world, a so called common cart is rarer than gold, if you see my meaning.

I've heard the same thing from other vendors, but usually they charge even more than what I can find on Ebay..?? The solution is simple : I DON'T BUY IT. But sadly I know some dumb ass will. I don't think Ebay is at fault entirely, its the whole internet, it makes finding information that much faster, which is fantastic, but in the hands of ignorant and greedy fools, information becomes twisted and they use it to justify thier prices without actually understanding or caring about what it is they are selling and what its really worth, which is usually much less than they think it is. On the other hand, at least now we can find rare games on line where as before Ebay it would have been impossible for me to have even the 180 games I have so far..... However I've only encounterd one flea market vendor with TOTTALLY RIDICULOUS prices, I have tried to reason with her but its like talking to a frog. She has about 80 atari 2600 games, I have bought several, but the rest are too high, so I tell her, I'll offer this much, and she says no, these games are extremely rare! This was over 2 years ago, the games are STILL there..... she will never sell them. She says she got the prices of the internet.... I tell her, I'm not stupid, I know what they go for on the internet, I have been playing video games for ever, I know all about the atari. (she couldn't care less): Examples of her prices: Venture $20 MAD $20 SIR LANCELOT $65 Towering Inferno $20 ... I mean, really, this just makes me pissed. I can afford it, I just don't want to pay that much! No way baby..... keep em.

I think he is related to Buck Rodgers, hence his high score abilities.

When you say beat, do you mean finding Rhonda, Quicklaw, the diamond, the 28 gold bars and the rat and NEVER fall victim to a single danger as it states in the manual, thus getting a perfect score of 199000? or do you mean that you do get this stuff but not a perfect score, or do you mean some variation on the above? I don't remember getting a perfect score, but I've come very close. Though my last serious attempt at perfection was in the 80's... when I was younger and had faster reflexes than a mouse.

Sure, I know what you mean, and when I said that Im trying to build a music synthesizer, Im not talking a modern digital synth based on software, I'm talking analog, strictly early 1980's technology, using outdated and older components, very similar to what Roland was doing in 1981-1985. Some synths from the early 80's even used a 6502, which if you didnt know is the same chip in the atari computers and many other computers, so there is a relationship between early video game systems and early synths in that they use the same ICs for the most part.... You are literally going back in time when you look inside atari 2600, forget the pre 1995 thing, this stuff is strictly 1970's, even though the 6502 is probably one of the most popular chips ever made, still used today, but not in computers or synthesizers. You should check in the programmers forum here and see if anyone has any advice..... see ya!

Hmmm, assuming you are a novice, pretty much as I am, or was, books are good, I have alot of books on electronics, my dads an electronics engineer. I myself have some very good university level electronics books as well as vintage books, and others on IC's and older computers. Yes, books are key. The thing is, I have a small lab where I dabble with this stuff, I've got electronics equipment, and access to anything I want due to my dads electronics connections, but having access to the equipment you will need knowing how to use them to undertake moding a 2600, is only a small part battle, what you really need I think (since I'm selft taught) is to have access to real-time help, like my dad and his friend who happens to be an electronics master. Without their hands on help, I would not be able to figure out what Im doing wrong, regardless of the books I have, though good books are a big help, and I do have some very good university books on electronics and computers. Without their help I just don't see how I could move ahead, you have no idea what it means to have access to a 70 year old electronics wiz, he's seen it all and knows all about 8 bit computers too! The internet has been somewhat usefull, but it falls short of being really practically usefull in this case, unless you get to know some of the homebrewers here who know all about this stuff like the back of their hands. Its taken me years to figure out what I know (which is painfully little) now and I'm trying to build a music synthesizer...not modify an atari, however I want to do this too. At any rate, you may as well start you can't fare anyworse than me.

What kind of electronics background do you have?? Your success in this venture will be directly proportional to this, unless you are really, really, really clever.

Turns out we are the same age. And no, I never did own a Microvision, but I certainly remember it and if I can find one that works I will buy one. I've heard that the chances of finding one today with a good and working LCD screen is very rare, so I fear that Ebay may not be the best place because you can't try it out and I don't know if you can trust some sellers. On the other hand if it is cheap enough it may be worth the risk. I think its a very cool retro system, conceptually it was ahead of its time by many years and it looks like something out of Star Trek. And what about the super hi rez 16 * 16 resolution, gotta love that!!!

It stinks, I tell you, stinky doo.

Thats good for you, but it makes ME sad, even though I have those games!! Really though, it is good to know you can still find these games, your mom is a righteous dudette. Where are you in Canada?? I am near Toronto and its dry here, D..R..Y... I tell you.
-
Never knew the Neo Geo existed until recently, same goes with the WanderSwan.... not popular here, but "Big In Japan" as they say. Those who do own one over here seem to really love the little guys. They say some of the best and most interesting games are available for both of those systems. I'm going to get one of each. I have a Gameboy Advance of course.... I have no idea which games to get myself, will have to search the net for clues.

I did not know that. I do remember Out of the World, it was quite good for those days, the type of game you could really sink your teeth into. Heart of the Alien sounds familiar, I may have seen or even played this withouth even realizing it was related to Out of This World....but I never owned one. I did manage to solve Flashback, it was not easy, but alot of fun.
