Placing a box beneath another box resets the first box's fall timer until the bottom box is not under it anymore. Basically it treats the bottom box as a real platform, which you can use to your advantage.

Thanks! I was indeed thinking of doing something like that, noticed it when I tossed the second box at the one I had placed on a movement switch. That was also why I mentioned I felt like I was missing one, since a third block would constantly keep the movement going by sticking to the block that's about to fall off the switch. I'll give it a shot by doubling on the bridge-switch and then placing the bottom one on the movement switch

  2. I've bought the game when it was released and did a bit of a playthrough of it this weekend up to M9 (I think it was M9 at least...). The timing on that level seems incredibly tight and it almost feels like I'm basically missing a box to make it more managable. On the other hand, it may just be intended :D

Getting the robot to the end of the room upstairs seems really tight as you need to first get it to start moving left and then activate the bridge asap. The speed the block gets from the tube doesn't seem enough to automatically restart walking after falling, otherwise it would've been a bit easier. I get the 'letting the robot fall' to grab the keys encased with robot-blocks, but timing wise it seems like a tight window to work with.

    Little example video: https://clips.twitch.tv/ProductiveGloriousFlamingoFrankerZ

Looking at the video, it may feel like the timing is a bit tighter than it actually is. I'm planning to more this weekend at least :)

Also great to see someone at least speedrunning the first levels, I rushed through it a bit after taking my first complete game over and it does seem quite managable. Especially when you start noticing patterns at the other boss-fights as well. The biggest trouble I've had so far was the Sand boss, as it didn't feel completely predictable so I'd run into it.

  3. Hmm, the Sandra's I know are timid and not too deadly... as far as I know... I'll be more careful around them...

I'm looking forward to it at least, also to play this on stream using the poker chips as intended instead of my half-arsed paper-method (with the camera showing this part on the table as well). I'd still want to check if I can lower my time :D

  4. Er, these are not two of those gems. :)

    Haha, I'm fully aware :D

There's a reason why Fat Bobby is used in 'kusoge' (bad game) tournaments, that's a big part of why I want it.

Is there an easy way to take video of an emulator? I'd like to upload long plays of lynx titles and would prefer to do it through emulation for good video quality and maybe save states if needed.

Depends on what you'd find easy, but using OBS you can capture the window of the emulator and just record that. It's pretty easy to set up :)

If I'm correct, the output is a .flv which (I guess) can be uploaded to Youtube. I haven't done much with Youtube myself, everything I do ends up on Twitch.

  5. I've had a Lynx during my childhood and still have some fond memories of it. For instance, Lynxing up for Rampage, Xenophobe and Todd's Adventure in Slime World, but also my masochistic attempts through Batman Returns, breaking my childhood brain over higher levels in Chip's Challenge or raging at Bill & Ted.

It is pretty niche, especially if you'd compare it to the Gameboy crowd. For me it started living again earlier this year. I've been (more seriously) speedrunning since... March or so, where I was picking up other niche titles (the CDi Zelda games). At one point I was just going over my childhood games and ran into the Lynx games. As my mother actually carefully stored pretty much everything, I had access to 2 Lynxes (my brother doesn't want his) and quite some games. So I started looking into whether it'd be possible to somehow stream the Lynx.

And that was the point for me where things took off. I ran into an article about Wyvern Tales, which was just released at that point. As someone who really enjoys (J)RPG's, I was really intrigued by this title, so I ended up here and I'm on the waiting list (hoping I'm part of the upcoming batch). From there I ran into the McWill mod, which has been applied by McWill this summer (thanks again!). Using that, I've worked out a setup which I can use to stream the game to my PC so I can record or stream it. So basically it became a small hobby project to get this going. Because this is now possible, it opens up a basically untouched goldmine of speedrunnable games. Emulators are generally a bit frowned upon for in-person marathons, but using the McWill mod + the setup I've created, these become possible as well. For instance, I'm currently planning to do a speedrun of Zaku in November and / or maybe the Easy adventure of Todd's Adventures in Slime World (I think that can be finished within 10 minutes, would have to time it). But bigger would be the speedrunner Janglestorm who will run Gordo 106 at AGDQ (start of January), which is the biggest speedrun marathon worldwide. He'll use my Atari / setup for it, so my Lynx is going to get world fame

I'm hoping this will also lead to some more exposure to the library of the Lynx. Sure, not all of it is good, but there definitely are some gems in there. But for me, the staying power are definitely the homebrews that are being worked on and the games I haven't touched yet. I still want to play Ninja Gaiden III for instance, so I'll order that one soon. Likely add Fat Bobby to it, etc. As a speedrunner I'm also really enjoying Karri's 'Shaken, not stirred' in combination with the challenge. The main downside would be the initial costs to get into it. Getting a working Atari may proof difficult for some people (depending on country / region), you'd have to hope it's still working and if you really want to get the most out of it, a McWill mod would be great to have. However, the Everdrive-esque solution of the Multi-SD card will also really help revitalize the scene, I'd wager.

  6. I'm like you Grumpmeister. :-) or :'-(

I've checked the VOD of my playthrough yesterday and did discover a pattern. Using that, I've played through the entire game yesterday to try it out and after some tries I did get more consistent at killing that boss. I'd love to hear from others what their strategy was, but to help you out:

The attacks follow a certain pattern as in:

    - First attack will be shot from the bottom

    - Second attack will come from the top

    - Third attack from the bottom

    etc. etc.

This means that for the first attack, you should stay around the top of the screen (not at the left-most edge, since an 'upwards' attack from the bottom can still reach the corner). Then move to the bottom, same deal, don't be at the far end. And follow that strategy for a little bit. After some cycles of top - bottom (around 8 to 10 projectiles fired), you'll notice that the projectile that was usually fired from the bottom is moving further and further up and will likely be fired from the middle. From this point onwards, the safest area is to stay at the bottom, around the horizontal middle of the screen.

During this I just barraged the boss with the small bullets. I think she's too slim for the big shot to do enough damage, and she's too far to the right to damage-boost and use the thrusters. Maybe she can be hit around the head with thrusters, but I'd advice against it as the fight itself is pretty long.

  7. I've spent a few hours on Zaku last night and it's a great game so far :)

As it was getting too late, I had to stop at (one of the) final boss(es). As I can't seem to find the spoiler tag, I'm trying to keep it as vague as possible; The boss which spawns the 'mini-boss' Zouzzz posted about here: http://atariage.com/forums/topic/151560-zaku-for-the-atari-lynx-official-thread/?p=4102656

I've been banging my head at that one for about 40 minutes as well, it's the first boss I can't really recognise a pattern or any kind of logic in the attacks it does. So when I've gotten past it (I think twice?), it felt like luck. So if anyone has hints as to how to beat this boss, please send me a PM :) . It just feels like I'm missing... something.

Also, reading back in this thread (all the way back to 2009), I noticed a mention about the existance of a level select code. As I'm quite likely going to speedrun this game, could anyone PM me this? It would help a lot with practice attempts :D

  8. I've spent some more time at Shaken, not Stirred last night and ended up with a lower time for hard:

    Hard 03:41:17 20D9

As this is getting quite a bit lower than the times posted at the eJagFest topic, I'll actually start streaming / recording the attempts for lower times. I'll also add these clips to any time I'll place here, so you can see the strategies I use and how I play the game (which in turn will hopefully result into people beating my times, let's get this contest rolling  ).

  9. Alright, let's raise the bar straight away and put this contest on 'Hard':

    .

    Hard 05:21:01 40F3

    (Layouting is also hard ><)

With that time set, it's actually a pretty fun game, awesome job on making this Karri :D

  10.

Yes. You can play it on an emulator also.

I was hoping to get the carts ready by now so that I could also ship carts to people who would like to play this on their original Lynx. But unfortunately I have not yet got all the materials together.

This reminds me about how to make notes in "Shaken, not stirred".

In order to make the game a little easier on memory I tried using poker chips to memorize what the girls have said during the game.

    attachicon.gifchips.jpg

I plan to include a small set of 5 ceramic poker chips. A typical secret agent kind of thing. One side has the original colour and the other side has a center with a different colour. So with this set you can easily make notes just by flipping poker chips!

The Clue sheet will replace the last page in the manual.

Awesome! I'll be giving this a shot :D

You're making a neat package out of this to be honest and the game looks pretty interesting. I know what I'll be playing tonight :D

  11. After being on the fence I've ordered Zaku from Songbird as well. Even though it felt a bit like a steep price, I'm guessing I won't get another chance any time soon. The lower shipping to Europe did give me the last push I needed, so I'll gladly make use of that.

Looking forward to it and thanks Carl for putting them up this way :) .
