  1. I grew up in North Texas (Sherman), and i remember the 'Coke for everything', lol. That worked for me, cos i like coke- every restaurant up here seems like they sell Pepsi instead. blech.

In the 80s growing up a bunch of families moved down here due to the issues in Detroit. Hanging with those kids they called it pop we were like what is that?

    :0

  2. Brand names are powerful.

    Around SE Texas its

    You want a Coke?

    Yes

    What kind?

    A Dr Pepper, Pepsi etc..

Soda or Pop are not even used by most.

    Band Aide...QTip etc..

Atari has that and lost it. Not getting it back. Its Xbox or PlayStation now that own that right...

  3. Nice! Famicom games are great. I'm able to play them in my NES with an adapter that I picked up a while back. I came across an eBay seller, adigy, out of Romania that has a bunch of "Famiclone" games for sale, many of which are in English and are way cheaper than the authentic NTSC NES cartridges. Among the games I picked up for cheap are Panic Restaurant, The Jetsons, a couple of the Adventure Island sequels, a hack that squeezed the Genesis version of The Lion King on NES, and others. He cut me a deal on pricing since I bought so many haha.

Thats good stuff. Mine are in Japanese. Some are easy enough to play like baseball, platform era and shooters. Other are not playable for me due to language issues. But its kinda fun bumping around in then trying to figure out what to do :)

And they are really cool looking carts compared to most American releases,

  4.

I would have given $5 just to see that.

In Los Angeles we have over 100 different advertising and marketing companies. I crossed paths with these folks for a lot of years. One movie promotion had kids standing on a corner holding up hand drawn signs that said "Honk if you love beasts!" The movie was called Beasts of the Southern Wild. It was a moderate success. The funny thing is many of the passers by told me that at first they thought the signs said "honk if you love breasts."

Advertising is what you make of it. Not everyone has to be Apple. Quite honestly, their ads in recent years have been terrible. Take this one for example.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kkq8a6AV3HM

What does this commercial actually say? That Apple's Animoji yourself feature will turn you into braying jackass? A unicorn that looks like a donkey followed by a talking poop emoji. That's a great message. This company has lost its way.

Besides, you kids have all been successfully baited into doing all the advertising leg for Atari for free. No payment necessary.

Holy hell she is a human unicorn! Lol

Yeah Apple of yor is not Apple of today. Still use them, main email is still a @mac.com even, but not the same IMO.

  5. That's really the key, too. Atari isn't offering anything beyond aesthetics, and even those are weak (IMO). What they are selling is really a moderately functional Knick-knack. Like a Lava lamp or a nutcracker. The purpose it ostensibly has, it performs badly, but that's excused because it looks nice.

What pull my attention was the Atari name and the look. Its an awesome looking unit. Both old school and modern atvthe same time.

But its not innovated in anyway. The Apple OS (10.0 and up) was, the iPod was a game changer, and the iPhone was industry changing. Apple combined looks and function like nobody else. Their quality was top notch as well, after Jobs died that seems to have changed though :(

  6. Marketing is expensive and a whole different beast, and it's vital and important.

And since the shills love comparing the Apple Fuji logo to Apple and think it has the same prestige and brand image... Marketing is one of the big reasons Apple is as successful as they are and have the prestige that they have, and the reason they can sell their products at the prices that they do.

You can hate on Apple all they want but they're geniuses at marketing. Go back 14 years ago and how often would you hear people refer to any MP3 player as an iPod? How many people have you heard over the past several years refer to any tablet as an iPad?

I remember back around 2005 when I was in 7th grade. My school had banned "iPods" And Numerous students thought they were being clever with the supposed "Loophole" when they'd be using their non-Apple MP3 player during class. I've lost count how many times a student got in a pissing match with a teacher claiming "It's not an iPod. iPods are made by Apple. You said no iPods, you never said anything about any other brand of MP3 player"

    Hahahahaha, Good Times

    FYI

Apples marketing budget in 2013 hit $1 Billion

    https://www.cbsnews.com/news/apples-ad-budget-hits-1-billion/

Obviously you won't or need to spend that much on marketing, but it would cost a sizable amount of money for a decent advertising budget for Atari get the word out. Realistically, how much advertising did the Ouya have? How many people realistically even knew what an Ouya was or that it existed?

Had a Apple IIc back in 87, been Apple ever since. First iPod, first iPhone, iMac, clamshell iBooks, OS9 the whole list of long Apple memories! Heck even bought Apple stock at $22 and sold it at $44 thinking Id made a killing..what a bonehead move!

And your right not long ago Apple was a has been that nobody cared about outside the small Apple community. It was sad really. And thenthat changed to the Apple of today, a giant in the industry. Maybe even more than that...

But Atari cant pull that off IMO. Apple innovated like crazy and that lead to their rebirth. Atari is not trying to do that at all.

  7. Couldn't agree more - Dreamcast is quite a fantastic system. Shenmue is right up there, that's for sure! The NES library is so vast, you'll be able to discover new games for a longggg time. Shame some games are so pricey, though.

Yes price keeps me away from some. Ive decided that $30 is my cap for a NES game.

The AVS plays Famincin games as well, those are $4-$5 shipped from Japan on eBay :0

Spent a bit more per game on the Jaguar games but that tops out around $70 for the home brews from AA.

The 7800 seems reasonable on games. Just have to control myself...

Just cant seem to pull the trigger on those expensive games though do thats good :0

  8. Their market cap is around $130 million so $3 is good bit of change for them.

Nintendo stormed back into the market and is killing it with the Switch after the Wii U tanked. The Atari box is not doing that for Atari though.

But if marketed it correctly at places like Best Buy it might sell. Places like Gamestop is the wrong market IMO for a console like this. Need to hit us old guy up not the younger generation. A older customer buying a nice new big HDTV and seeing that cool looking Atari branded box at Best Buy might just jump in based on nostalgia. Thats the market they should go after IMO. Has to be $200 or less though.

Assuming it is produced of course they might have some success.

  9. Good stuff. Yeah, I am with you on the no room aspect. LCD only for me, too. I run my 7800 through a VCR (acts as a demodulator) b/c my coax input is absolute shit on my TV. Then I have a PS3 on HDMI and the rest on composite inputs: Wii, Dreamcast, NES, N64 and JVC X'Eye.

Yeah kinda glad Im outta room cause Im kinda outta gaming money too! :)

Ah the Dreamcast, what a great system. Home of Shenmue the greatest game ever IMO. Really enjoying the NES as well, a system that Ive not played till this year.

  10. Sure thing. Btw, what type of TV do you plan on playing the 7800 on primarily? LCD or old school CRT? I ask b/c if the answer is LCD, there is no point in purchasing a light gun or light gun required games, as the gun will not work on an LCD TV.

7800 will be on a LCD, currently have that and an computer monitor hooked up in my game room.

Run a PS4, SNES Classic, Switch, AVS NES Clone and Xbox One S thru the monitor via HDMI.

Run a Dreamcast, PS1, GameCube, Jaguar and Wii they the LCD, the 7800 will be added to that via component.

Good info on the light gun, thanks.

Id get a cheap CRT but no dang room to put it in current set up :(

  11. Awesome info, thanks to all for the quick replies.

Looking at the games list no doubt need more than a 2600 controller!

Will check out the links and order tonight on the needed supplies to fire this thing up when it arrives!

  12. Just purchased a 7800 today on eBay. Honestly just to play Dungeon Stalker, which I️ also ordered today :0

    Never owned one before.

It is a composite AV modified model. It includes just the console, no power, controller or Av cables.

Question is other than eBay whats a good source for the power supply? Just weighing my options.

Also and most importantly to me, is there any downside to using a 2600 controller on the 7800? Is a 7800 controller worth a buy?

Thanks in advance for the help.

  13.

Wow, never heard of that. Like dill pickles and peanut butter so hmmm.... :0

Knew a lady once who use to take those huge dill pickles and shove a peppermint stick down the center and eat it like that.

    Thats hilarious. :0

Yeah that pickle peppermint thing even sounds bad..but she swore where she grew up (Beaumont Texas) everyone did it.

  14. As someone who likes peanut butter and dill pickle sandwiches, Id try these.

Wow, never heard of that. Like dill pickles and peanut butter so hmmm.... :0

Knew a lady once who use to take those huge dill pickles and shove a peppermint stick down the center and eat it like that.

  15. I'm fairly new to the INTV too but I like how this system is sounding amd I like how they are going about it. Probably helps it is the same company since the beginning.

We so lusted after one as kids, it just seemed so much more advanced than the 2600s we had. Heck might have to get one now to fulfill childhood dreams :0

  16. Dungeon Stalker is on my short Lust for next 7800 homebrew. If you have access to get a Pokey chip and like Adventure Island type platforners then you need to get Bentley Bears Crystal Quest for 7800. If the 7800 got more games like it back in the day Nintendo wouldnt have ran over it near as easily.

Good advice thanks. Ill check it out.

Born in 68, skipped from the 2600 to the Atari 400 to a Apple IIc for gaming so never really played many console between the 2600 and the SNES. Just diving back into all that Ive missed out on with those consoles. Lots of catching up to do!

  17.

I'm sure some percentage of the backers are genuine old Atari fans who do not follow the in-depth news as we do and are unaware of all the warning signs, Atari SA sad history and the pattern of similar crowdfunding failures. They also do not mind this box being unattractive regarding price vs specs vs usability - again, as we do.

Now, this is perfectly fine and I (and hopefully most other "haters") do not judge or feel ill will towards these people. Not everybody is a retro gaming news junkie and sometimes it's fine to just blow some dosh on a whim without doing tedious research. No problem here.

The problem is with the other types of backers: firstly, the thirsty speculectors/scalpers who only care about getting the ridiculous "certificate", will never even open it and already calculate future profits based on some delusional "rarity scale".

The other type is a blind zealot who despite knowing all the facts goes the three-monkeys route and refuses to acknowledge anything substantial, instead hand waving away the facts and acting as free mouthpiece on the behalf of the crowdfunders . Dunno, there must be some sort of bias involved here, such as a need to believe, notsalgia overdrive, protect-the-investment or some other ones, perhaps all at once.

Crowdfunding is actually about 10 years old now, fairly old in modern fast moving times and we've witnessed enough spectacular failures to perhaps wise up. And yet, the same patterns emergerepeatedly, from Chameleon to Vega, through Smach Z to this one here. The aforementioned backer types are a big part of the problem, they justify and enable these things to happpen over and over again and for that they deserve all the scorn and derision.

    Great points.

The best thing out of crowd funding in gaming has been Shenmue 3 IMO. Other than that nothing really has grabbed me fully. The Ataribox is of interest to me and can see one in my house if it is developed and is interesting. Id paid a bit more for a Atari branded box to be honest.

Id also wager there is a group out there that would trash this thing if it came out, was able to play everything between the 2600 and the Jaguar and the Atari computer games. Heck it could spit out grill cheese sandwiches and cold beer as well and some would still trash it. Not me, love a good grill cheese!

Agree that nostalgia is a huge factor, and today thats still sucks me into bad movies from the 80s, crappy hair metal from the 80s and a odd fascination with most things 80s. Atari has a hold on me because of that as well.

Im pretty objective about this entire project, hope it works out but if it does not it will not really effect me much. Dont really need more games in the backlog to play! :0

  18. See this is more of what Atari should have done: http://m.ign.com/articles/2018/07/04/first-details-on-the-intellivision-reboot-console-controller-and-games

Will Intellivisions system be awesome or make it out? Don't know but there is no room for this to be considered a scam.

Ive not had much experience with the Intellivion, only the rich kids had those growing up, us poor kids had 2600s :0

But that cool they are making that.

  19. I would strongly encourage you to check out some of the homebrews. Draconian is one of the more recent 2600 homebrews and I had a friend have a bunch of fun playing the RPG Dungeon last night.

Ive heard great thing about that game. Ill have to order a copy.

Want to get a 7800 to play Dungeon Stalker home brew. That one looks cool :)

Played some Commamdo on NES tonight. Also some Iron Tank on the NES. Iron Tank is tough for me..lots of me dying going on in that game!

  20. All I know is that we have yet another new member, who only posts in one topic, defending AtariBox in a rather sea lion-like way.

    "Who knows."

    "That's crazy."

Dude, there are a lot of better, more interesting threads in which to talk about Atari games, old and new. The ship has sailed on this one.

    🌮 🌮 🌮

Your acting like a bit of an jerk towards me and for no reason other than we disagree. Ive not attacked you in anyway other than to disagree with your views. If thats not the point of a forum (to exchange different views and share info) what is?

Not sure how repeatly saying it may or may not come out, and it may or may not suck if it does like Ive posted on here qualifies for defending this item. How is that me defending Ataribox?

  21. I have crowd funded stuff but Atari needs to pull up its big girl pants if it thinks that they will get no criticism for using a more unreliable site than kickstarter and having no prototype.

I am not saying they will but they could run away with basically 3 mil and not give anyone anything. They dont want that negative backlash? Then make a prototype first and dont give them a reason.

What was odd is they set a target of $100,000 for the crowd funding. Pretty low number overall. Maybe to gauge interest? Who knows.

Might or might not see the light of day. Might or might not fail if it does. It will not challenge the big 3 console makers at all..no way that occurs.

Not if we wanna see crowd funding go nuts then Star Citizen is that product. That is a crazy story that is still ongoing. Makes the ole Ataribox look like a gold medal winner! Up to what $150,000,000 raised now..some individual folks $25,000 into backing? Thats crazy.

  22. How has the press affected the lack of a prototype? How has negativity affected them faking game footage? Last I checked dumb youtubers don't randomly build stuff for companies like Atari. Isnt that their job?

And I am tired of hearing Nintendo mentioned in conjunction with this box. Last time Atari went up against Nintendo they got their ass kicked as Nintendo brought gaming back.

Also I also remember the time that my parents had to fund the SNES a year in advance to predict to have it under the Christmas tree for the following year? Wait what is that? That didnt happen? You mean they went into a store where it had already been built and on a retail shelf? Last time I checked I didnt do any indegogo crap for my gameboy, gba, gamecube, wii, or wiiu.

If you want to compare this to anything there are two things close to this project.

    1. Ouya Similar: crowdfunding, can play old games, can play indie games.

Differences: was on kickstarter meaning they had to have a prototype before they could list it. Kickstarter kicked ataris indegogos ass.

    2. The Chameleon Similar: New system from a retro company, atari cases, no prototype, ran by people who has not built shit before.

Differences: shows some sign of trying to get some games on it. Granted ones footage was faked and the other probably as well, but at least I believe they will get ported.

I am not a fan of the taco posts, but I am also not a fan of people trying to make this into something that it isnt. It will not touch the Switch. It is something you can easily replace with a computer. It is too expensive because unlike the other companies who lose money on console sales, they dont have any software to back it up. Tempest and Vault are a horrible software selling point.

Those who back just need to admit that they are an easy mark for retro nostalgia and are perfectly happy with an expensive streaming box that may play some low end games and dont want to hassle with a cheap and easy retropie setup for classic gaming.

Taco people should recognize that some people are okay with the above.

If someone does not like crowd funding then dont support it or products that are funded by it. No harm no foul. No reason to attack those that do, its their money. Lots of attacks on those backers over the past month.

Its still a relatively new business practice so historical comparisons dont fully apply IMO.

It did get Shenmue 3 rolling and developed and thats sweet! So it does work on occasion.

We all over pay for things in our lives, its pretty subjective when it comes to value. Ive done it plenty of times :0 If somebody wants a Atari branded box that they pay more for just because its Atari branded then God bless em IMO.

  23. I feel no hostility towards you.

The "press" isn't saying anything that isn't true. The public (including bloggers and youtubers and wankers in this forum thread such as myself) has no power over Atari's engineering or design or marketing. If "controversy" like Atari falsely implying that Tempest 4000 was running in Linux on AtariBox hardware without the developer being on board hurt the number of pledges they were able to take a year in advance, too bad for them. If Atari showing empty boxes as if it's a "working prototype" and lying about the nature of the press encounter hurt Atari's ability to collect no-refund "pre-orders" that aren't pre-orders, that's not the fault of anyone but Atari.

Atari doesn't deserve any benefit of the doubt. They've demonstrated bad faith repeatedly, and if you're unable to see that, you're not paying close enough attention or thinking critically. Discussion is moot until they show something. Until they do, their promises are as empty as the placeholder template on the website of their bigshot partner. www.tingiant.com.

Going to have to disagree about some YouTube channels. Their tabloid like coverage of this issue was nothing short of clickbait. Their attempts to appear objective (which many tried to do) were very poor. Reminded me of supermarket tabloid type headlines on their videos. It was more their delivery than message that turned me off of them. To each their of course, others clearly disagree.

No horse in this race myself at this point. Its interesting to see this develope though , Ill stay tuned to see if / how this item reaches the market. Still might get one of the final product if it is something interesting enough.
