  1. I keep forgetting that you don't change the colors. So I guess forget the gray, but I still like the Bender sprite and you could still adjust it as I suggested above couldn't you? You can adjust the height of sprites can't you? Didn't you do that with Pole Position?

     

    In some games it's possible, in others not..

    In mr robot the sprite is as tall as it gets

  2. Try that Player white be light gray something like colour (0C) instead of usual white (0E) would probably be more metalic and be different than the PF in the gfxs that is real white?

    And what about if enabling Multicolour mode and get a 3rd colour? I saw at Altirra that P0 is white while P1 is that cyan. Lets say that the light gray (0C) Oring cyan (96) will get (9E) what we could get it look like?

     

    Also saw that P2 & P3 nor the MISSILES (these are already set in 5th PLAYER Mode with xPOs but don't seem to be in use then taking PF3 colour that isn't also used because the game seem to be using Bitmap mode 4colours) are used anywhere:

    Couldn't we also add these somewhere (even over some static gfxs so that the code doesn't need to be altered)?

    Great ideas.. sadly I don't know the first thing about color tweaking.

    A real hacker is needed here.. wink wink ;)

     

    also if I understand correctly the cyan layer applies only in the helmet area.


  3. Just dawned in me to try something. You know ,if you wait a bit, the game goes into a little demo mode, with the little guy running toward the right-side of the screen, eventually dying on the scorpion, if it gets that far. Well, I decided to turn off pm collisions-detection, to see if he went any farther and where to. Well, he makes it past the scorpion, falls down a shaft and keeps running right, into a wall and continues doing so for...well, he's been doing so for a few minutes, now, on my system. Kind of predictable, I guess, but was hoping for something more. icon_mrgreen.gif

  4. Too late ;) ... just finished. I did a 1st level "speed-run", which took me about 10 minutes, and an hour of falls and hxggxds for the lost levels...

    Yup, I noticed exactly what you just said: the levitating rope sequence still has original sprites:

    I see when Harry is jumping he has no feet :-o :_( .

    and, I personally think that the movement of Harry's head is a bit too "goofy" ... perhaps moving it a pixel closer to the center of the body ?

     

     

    Yeah the feet in the jump frame are gone on purpose, I wanted a long stride, and simply there is no room for feet..

    I have already reduced the back and forth movement of the head to only one pixel ! I don't want to make it static.. it will negate all the effect..

    Then, he'll have to go to a "particular" place where these collected objects will be combined so that the snake charmer sounds the trumpet making the rope, which is inside the pot, levitate attachicon.gif12_Pitfall_2_LostLevels_END_01.png.

    This will allow Harry (with Rhonda, the Raj Diamond and Quicklaw, whose reappear just in time to leave the caverns but we didn't see them since before Harry passed the first-caverns-portal - seems he carried them in one of his pockets ?! :-D )

     

    ok news flash (for me anyway ;)),

    the whole going up the rope sequence is entirely separate !!

    It does not use the existing frames for Harry, Rhonda, Diamond and Quicklaw... so I have got to update those as well..

     

    Another more final version coming up !

    So macdlsa if you are willing to do this run through of the 2nd (hellishly hard) level, wait for the final final version..

    any help in this is greatly appreciated ;-)

    The 1st level is pretty easy, and I have completed it repeatedly during the course of the hack (the extra practice sure helped a lot !)

    The 2nd level though is impossibly hard for me and since I haven't found a trained/invisibility version,

    I haven't been able to check the new sprites in action and especially the ending :(

     

     

    ..Too bad I'm not able to program anything else than a June seaside vacancy with wife&daughter... :grin:

    On the other subject,

    I would love to participate in "Pitfall II Arcade" version, in any platform, sadly I can only contribute in the sprites design department..

  7. Wow great explanation ! I didn't know all that..

    ok I knew about the snake charmer guy, the mc hammer thing was a joke :),

    but the flute the pot and the rope are news to me.. also I can see that Rhonda is slightly different in the final sequence, I need to find this frame..

     

    Can you take the same screenshots using the new version if its not to much trouble ??

  8. There it is, the final version !! ;-)

    with final version of Harry's animation,

    mc hammer replaced with lost explorer guy,

    new piranha fish and fire ant (2nd level).

     

    I haven't been able to reach the end of the game to see how the end sequence plays with the new sprites (too hard for me, even with save states.. :( ),

    so please someone check this for me..

  9. IMHO the new sprites are better, I just don't like one thing about the animation of the hero - the front-back movement of his head is a bit too exaggerated.

     

     

    ..its good work and they look nice! I think compared to the original they are better implemented. The only issue I have is that Pitfall Harrys head bobs too and fro so much its a little distracting to me.

     

    Regarding Harry himself it was a struggle to rebuild him..

    Starting with the existing (1) animation cycle, I have drawn countless frames to end up on what I consider to be the best (2) !

    Unfortunately the fixed colored strips didn't allow me to use up and down movement in his stride :(

    So I scratched that, and I tried to keep his head level while adjusting his running frames accordingly.. finally I end up in cycle (3)

    which is in the released xex.

    Your comments got me thinking again, so (4) is the final version of Harry with less head movement,

    and yes you were right, he looks definitely better !! :-D

     

    The animation cycle will be included in the final version of the hack, as soon as I finish the new piranha and ant sprites !

  10. Apart from the hallucination (mc hammer) theory,

    I believe originally Harry rescue a random Indian snake charmer who was lost in the caves and later the same guy (same sprite) rescue him back..

    I have changed this guy's sprites with an explorer type (pith helmet and all), how this explorer came to know the magic rope trick.. is a mystery.. :lolblue: :lol:

     

    ..also since I managed after 30 years to work my way into the second level, I observed the new piranha fish in motion and I didn't liked them..

    so I reedit them, final version coming soon !

  11. Hey thanks for the feedback !

     

    Actually I was going for a little different, that's the title of the topic anyway ;-)

    The critter sprites are too small and too monochrome (ish) to make a big redesign.. I tried to give them a little more character.

    The change I am most proud of, is the full run animation of Harry in so little pixels, very happy with him :-D

    Also I have redrawn all the static characters Harry has to rescue (Rhonda, the lion, the other lost explorer and the charmer)

    All the changes have to do with sprite editing, they don't have any impact to the game play.

     

    Cafeman I hear you, the condors and especially the bats are brutal, maybe another easier version is in order ?

    I believe that he was bitten by a vampire bat or poisonous scorpion, and the happy ending (including from all things mc hammer and a snake charmer at the bottom of the earth !?!?!) was a hallucination caused by the poison as he slowly falls to sleep... Have you seen the movie "The Descent" ?
