  1. Were there any projects hooking the Atari up to one of the phoentic speech chips of the day? Googling I could only find this that maybe relevent, SPO-256-AL2, I can only recall these sorts of chips sold at Maplin in the early/mid '80s.

Just found this: Atari User - July 1987 which contains an article 'Give your micro the power of speech-full details of easy DIY upgrade' but I can't find an online scan of this.

There's the recent AtariVox upgrade. It interfaces via the joystick port for use on the 2600, 7800, and 8-bitters. It uses the SPO-256-AL2 (2nd generation 'Speak-n-Spell' chip). The chip can be clocked to 19200 baud though, making it a perfect candidate for an SIO sevice.

  2. How do you get to the city? I only played this a few times.

Bomb the special blinking target markers that appear on certain bridges and buildings.

Ah - I guess that's why I never got there. I always got bored and bombed the hangar to see the screen mess up.

  3. I love to watch the IK demo/scene changes and listen to the great music.

What's the command/key to switch music in IK+ on?

I'll have to check. In the version that I have, I'm sure it defaults to "on" after loading.

No music for me, and it's PAL only. Crashes on NTSC after a few seconds. Top border has some flickering green rasters too. It also runs much slower on the NTSC machine. I suppose it's time to finally do the upgrades to my PAL machine and make it my main system.

  4. Blue Max is a must play. I remember when I first discovered how to get to the city. I had so much fun flying low and hitting the cars and rows of tanks!

  5. What you need to do is "mount" the ATR in drive one of APE. Then just turn on the Atari and let it boot that disc. The mirror feature lets you use the PC drive as a large hard disk on the Atari. You cannot boot from a PC mirror. As long as you have a bootable ATR in slot one of APE, the Atari will boot from it.

My goal is to mount images stored on my PC from the Atari 800Xl. I can mount an image into APE like normal in Windows XP with no problems but I want to be able to browse and mount my disk images stored on my Windows System from the Atari System side not Windows side.

    Thanks for the replies!

Sorry about that. I will see if I can get this working. I'll try to post back tomorrow after work.

  6. I swear I used the copy CAR command. Now you have me curious. Time to burn Sparta X and try it - or I won't be able to sleep :)

    *** EDIT ***

Well - my memory obviously fails me. Spent quite some time burning SParta X to my 8-Mbit flashcart (Ace-80XL is on the 1Mb). Tried the copy command and got the $A1 error.

  8. I see no objections, i.e. I think it should work without problems. Just get the current version, i.e. the one which can be found on the SpartaDOS X 4.41 cartridge, because any older one will most probably contain bugs that have been fixed before it got incorporated into new SDX.

One more question. I have the 4.41 ROM working on Atari800 2.0.3 and a SpartaDOS formated image connected as D1. I can't seem to figure out how to copy ARCCLOCK.SYS to the image from the cartridge?

    thanks again.

To access files on the cartridge, do a "COPY CAR:ARCCLOCK.SYS D1:ARCCLOCK.SYS". This is assuming the emulator works as the real machine does.

  9. Awesome! Another great use for my 1MB cart. I may have to buy a few more. I want to keep SDX 4.41 on one, as I got a R-Time 8 clone cart. I have the adapter for my 130XE, lets me use both carts at the same time and gives me a PBI bus.

  10. For X360 owners -> Space Giraffe from well known Llamasoft. Eat this :) Sfx is absolutely brilliant!

It is a wonderful game. I have actually beat all 100 levels. Super OX mode it beyond insane. I am only at level 17 or so!

His next installment, GridRunner +++ (no word on official name) should be out very soon. I've seen it in action, it looks great.

  11. Testing... testing... 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 0. Hey folks, this message is being typed on a genuine 1200xl keyboard. So far, so good. Still need to figure out a way of disconnecting the Atari from the keyboard when using the PC (without having to pull apart the case). The two don't seem willing to share a keyboard.

All major pc function keys are present, e.g. alt end pageup page down etc. F1 thru f4 still contol cursor functions just like original (although I may change that). A few keys are different, for example, the @ is above the 2 instead of the 8. There are a few ghosts present, so far only two that I've found: o followed too quickly by a u or f will give some ghost characters. At my typing speed, it's not much of a problem. Will post pics after I figure out the switch issue.

EDT: I figured it out. All that needs to be done is run a spst switch (I'm going to try to use the channel select switch) inline on at pin 14 of the keyboard connector to break the ground when using the pc.

    Awesome!

  12. As a matter of fact, I'm rather surprised (positively) to hear that anyone besides me is interested in a Hardsynth tracker.

Ohh!, I am highly interested too! Please add me to betatesters... :-)

I like your decision for an a8 tracker running on a8. Especially because

i know you would take care of hardsynth method properly implemented.

I'm also interested in this, but I have no musical ability. All I could do is test it and see if it crashes or uses extended memory (I have a 320KB 130XE).
