  1. How is it addressed?

    Pretty simple, I'd say.

Just store the sample "levels" to $D600-$D603, each address corresponding to an individual "voice".

I might try and make one - just breadboard it and only use the one chip as a proto.

Really, to take advantage of this upgrade, you'd want a large RAM expansion. 8 kHz sample rates probably give the lowest "acceptable" quality for digital playback which in itself equates to 8K per second per voice.

But, it would be good for wavetable type output as well, albeit quite demanding on CPU resources. Something like a PIC controller to take the workload away might be more desirable.

The reason I am building (I know - I am slow to get this done) is for the Neo Tracker program. It works with single PoKey, stereo PoKey, and CoVox. If you guys have not tried this program, check it out. It is an amazing piece of software for our little 8-bit machines.

  2. Just curious if anyone here has this program running on their 800XL? I remember not being able to get it to work on my XL when I had it in the late 90's. Does it require a translator disk? IF it does work on the XL (which I'm hoping) would someone be kind enough to make me a copy permitting I sent a blank disk and SASE?

This is one program that requires BASIC to be enabled. It definitely works on a stock 130XE with no translator disk.

  3. Well just got off my lazy butt and ordered two R-Time Carts.

Didn't know we could still get them - email sent.

Ditto! I hope I can get one since I now have a Sparta Dos X cart (Atarimaz flash version) and an original ICD ECI+cart to PBI adapter (allows 2 carts to be plugged into the 130XE and they stand up like in an 800XL)

  4. Another bump. It's a little bit of a drive for me, but I'd make my way up there.

I'd guess we are getting dangerously close to the time of bad snowy Ohio winter weather. Might be best to start planning for a big Spring get together.

Yes, at this point I am going to be pretty busy through the holidays, so sometime in the early spring would be better for me.

Maybe now would be a good time for people to start listing what equipment they have, what they would be willing to bring, what they want to demo, etc.

  5. I wonder - for others that have 'bars problem', did it happen during the game, or when you were entering some menu (well, any screen other that the game). Like when you die, finish level, etc.

IIRC it happened both times after pressing the trigger to (re-) start a level.

    so long,

Awesome game! I finally hooked up my PAL machine and tried out the game. Very nicely done.

  7. With the FP ideal, a 16bit floating point package replacing the original package would be a huge boost of speed. The floating point package is actually part of the operating system kernel and not part of Basic. Did someone wrote a faster floating point package for the Atari? I have not seen too many comments back about the ideal of adding byte and integer variables for higher programming languages like C and Basic that would compiled down to 1 or 2 byte values and calculations can be done very quickly.

Yes, there is a fast math routine (standard OS ROM replacement). I have the ROM laying around somewhere. I have never used it though.

  8. The Amiga drive reads Atari disks?

Before I made my first APE interface, I did it this (painful) way on a file of about 30 sectors:

    1. Write BASIC program to read file, and display a hex dump in Graphics 1 with a custom character set on real Atari.

    2. Hook Atari RF output into PC capture card. Grab frame from each hex dump screen from (1).

    3. Use Photoshop to despeckle and touch up frame grab BMPs.

    4. Use OCR software to create .TXT file from sequence of BMPs.

    5. Manually correct OCR errors (there were many, hence the need to create the custom character set).

    6. Run program under Atari800Win+ to read hex dump files from (4), and recreate binary file.

Wow - that's what I call dedication. A modern form of a magazine type in :)

  9. I'm surprised to 'see' you here. Is it still possible to register Ice-T?

Trust me, your surprise is probably nothing compared to my astonishment at seeing people discussing Ice-T over ten years after its last release!

And I guess that as long as I can breathe, I can still accept money :)

But to be more serious, the plain answer is that there is no real benefit for registering. I never made a "registered" version of the software (it was hard enough to maintain the mess of the source code under the 8-bit's file managing tools without having two versions to worry about). There are only about 20 registered users, Ice-T was never the money-maker I hoped it would be ;)

Anyway, let's wait and see. If we get people breathing new life into this project there might be a point in asking for donations. Or, perhaps it could be sold as a cartridge, depending on whether anyone is interested and can pull it off.

Wow - great to see you hear Itay. I've been using the Ice-T XE 2.72 for several years now. There's a few die hard 8-bit fans that still do telnet BBSing with them on a regular basis. It would be great to see some upgrades / enhancements.

  10. Just to confirm - the XE can be improved with a kit, right?

"65XE / 130XE “The Best” “XE” Touch (Formally called “TT” Touch for XE computers) Improved Silicone Cups that replaces the existing spongy / mushy feeling cups inside the XE Keyboard to give you a firm feeling keyboard with tactile feed back on each key stroke. XE Touch will only fit two out of the three versions / brand Atari Keyboards used on the XE Series Computers. If your XE keyboard DOES NOT have spring under each key cap, then you have the right XE keyboard that can be upgraded to “XE” Touch. All that is required for installation is a #0 Phillips screw driver. Full set of 62 “XE” Touch Contacts. CB102117 $29.95 Special Buy!! $14.50 Now a Must Buy for every 65XE / 130XE Owner!"

I've not used it, however I didn't know that some XE keyboards had springs!! Mine don't.

I have installed the Besr XE touch upgrade in my 130xe and my XEGS. I have also installed the equivelent upgrade in my 520ST. IMHO the upgrades are great. they give the keyboards a tactile responce that is just about as good as the 1200XL. If you do any kind of typing on an XE, this upgrade is a must.

I have also done this mod to my 130XE. I use the machine several times per week and it is great to type on now.

  11. I wouldn't be opposed to making the mighty trek from the east side of Cincy up to Cleveland. It indeed would also give me an excuse to make all of these commons go away...

Hmm - wonder how I missed this thread. I'm only an huor away from Cleveland, so I could make the trip anytime.

  12. Thanks! This is exactly the upgrade that was needed.

I have noticed a problem when using the Xtended RAM though. I get green bands through the picture. It works fine when using the RAM under the OS. I am testing this on an NTSC 130XE, using the 320KB Peterson upgrade (mem upgrade is working correctly) and MyDOS 4.53.

I've not been able to reproduce this problem, does it happen with all images? Are you reading the source image from a floppy? Can you send me a copy of the image?

    Thanks,

I will do some further testing ASAP. I was reading the files via APE & SIO2PC. I switched to Xtended memory after viewing some pics in the other mode first. When I switched back, they displayed fine.

  13. Games are cool, but honestly, I would like to have a full color ANSI term emulator. A color update to Ice-T XE would be the supreme application for me.

I suppose the color JPEG viewer could be updated, but there's not much impressive about just viewing a still picture that will take one or two minutes to decode.

  15. Yeah - it's the CX-8 keypad. plugs into the joystick port of the 8-bit computers. It was out when the original 400/800 were new. I have one, and the manual that came with it. I can scan it if needed.
