  1. I tend to think of Supercharger games as being "not 2600" games, but Supercharger games.  The same with the ARM stuff.  They are "Melody" games.  That's not belittling them or saying they are cheating, etc.  They're just their own thing.  I have no interest in making one, but I understand the appeal and think it will eventually become the only game in town.  If you go to the store and sort by 'Most Popular' you see a trend in each release cycle.  Whatever the big ARM arcade port(s) are sell an order of magnitude more than the others, which sell in increasingly lower numbers.  This is also due to everybody having a Harmony cart now and the availability of the roms.  Nobody does this for sales, but it does kind of show where things are headed.

As for the competition, Galagon is this year's Mappy.  Zoo Keeper is next year's Galagon.

This is already present on each game's page in the AtariAge store. Look for the Melody logo.

I don't think the Melody logo automatically means it is an enhanced game.  Dungeon II's store page has the Melody logo on it and it is a regular 4k game.  I think it just means Al is using Melody boards because it makes his life easier.  The "Cartridge Size" spells it out though.

  3. Loot boxes coming to a 2600 near you!  :)  I'm joking of course, but now that you've proven the technology it'll be interesting to see how long it takes for somebody to use it for something like that.

  4. Looks like he's updated the listing with the below (not helping his case):

    NTSC-Users:
The PAL-Games on this Cartridge will work on your NTSC-System, but the colors are different. If you need a NTSC-Version of this Cartridge, please let me know. NTSC contains most of the listed games. Some are PAL-only and will be replaced with games like Halo 2600.

We'll be playing footage from the original arcade game to give context for your game Phantom II.

Hi James.  Thanks for doing that.  I've noticed over the years few people seem to have heard of the arcade game and seem to have a hard time wrapping their head around what's going on.  It helps to have played or at least seen the arcade game.  It was one of my faves back in the day.

One other thing I want to mention, there is a small hardcore group of people who like to play Pirate a little differently than most do.  They liken it to Minesweeper and the goal of the game is to win without fighting (LeDuc anyway, sometimes you have to fight the voodoo priestess or snake if they have the shovel or are covering up the X).  This requires locating everything beforehand and plotting out exactly what you are going to do.  Even then, LeDuc may get to the X first.  But if you move away and he steals the shovel, he will also start randomly roaming the island again so you get to try again.

P2/P is interesting from a historical perspective.  Beyond that, I'm not sure how well it will go over in the current era.  It was the second bB game to make it to the AA store (Solar Plexus was the first).  It was written with one of the earliest versions of bB.  None of the fancy stuff was available back then, so it is very 70's looking.

P2 is B&W because the arcade game was.  I made color an unlockable feature but some people just couldn't understand, so I made it a game variation also.

Hit fire 3 times on the P2/P game select screen to get to the hidden Easter Egg game.

  7. Awesome!  I do a lot of my development on RHEL based systems which usually requires you to compile emulators from source.  z26 has always been one of the most headache free in this regard.  The new version just requires adding a  -std=gnu99  to the Makefile for it to compile.  Works great!  Thanks!

Somehow I missed this one, really lovable. Your were able to record more speech than I on 2K, imprissive! Is it 2bit only?

Yes, the speech is really impressive.  I can't take credit for that.  Eckhard Stolberg wrote the routine/utils originally.  You can check it out here:

It's been almost a decade since I used that, but as best I recall I simply loaded the .wav up in CoolEdit and downsampled it until I got it as low as I could go and still sound ok.  The 'Prepare for battle!' is actually a MAME wav file from Space Fury.

  9. That time of the year again.  For those in the US, ignore all the political nonsense going on, have a beer and hot dog and play a quick round of this.  Happy 4th!

It seems like a list of 20-25 of the best homebrews would be a nice thing to have. Any ideas?

As far as AtariAge homebrew goes, go to the store and sort by most popular.  That gives you a pretty good idea.  Roms are available for most of it with a little searching.

BTW, love z26 (works great in CentOS).

There are plenty of people who appreciate both.

That's true.  But there is a growing subset who doesn't.  Back in the day, if you made bB games you were told a lot of the time "bB games suck!  You should make asm games".  I have a feeling it won't be long until we start seeing "Vanilla asm/bB games suck!  You should be using DPC+", etc.  I've already had one or two comment shot my way that if I ever do a Dungeon 3, it needs to be DPC+, 64k, etc.  Not knocking anybody else or their games.  They're great.  But the scene is changing.

  12. The game has been out long enough that a few people are coming across the Easter Egg on their own and asking questions, so I thought I would try to explain it in detail.

Get the mistletoe and go to the other megalithic structure (not the grove where you start). If you move into it, you will teleport to <somewhere else>. You may notice the mistletoe did not make the journey with you. You have misused the power of the mistletoe and are now trapped in an infinite realm with no way back home. Your only recourse is to try and survive for as long as you can. Meanwhile, back in the forest the dark faeries would have found the mistletoe laying on the ground where you disappeared from and returned it to the Temple of the Crow.

After your inevitable death, cycle through the playable characters and you will find a 4th character (from the dark realm). He also wants the mistletoe. Not to restore nature in this realm, but to return home (he was sucked through when you opened the portal). Therefore he needs to pass through the other megalith after getting the mistletoe to win the game. Healing at the grove doesn't work for him because he is not aware of the Old Gods, who in turn will not bless an unbeliever.
