What should the next 2600 RPG be like?
s0c7 replied to Gemintronic's topic in Atari 2600 Programming
From some of your other posts it sounds like you are planning to do one. If so, I wish you luck. However, you should create it based on the type you enjoy most, not what you think would be the most popular. These things are very time consuming and if you are writing something you aren't really into it will never get finished. As far as CiE, take away from that that you shouldn't talk about it until you have something to show (a WIP for example). It just gets people worked up. As far as voting goes, I'm more old school than most of what you've listed and have already made a dungeon crawl similar to my favorite Telengard: http://www.atariage.com/forums/topic/127378-dungeon-2600-release-candidate/page__view__findpost__p__1590573 -
What should the next 2600 RPG be like?

I suggest you read this thread. http://www.atariage.com/forums/topic/82625-2600-rpg-codename-cie/ -
Just want to chime in with a word of support for him as well. As stated, he didn't start this thread. And keep in mind a lot of us who have released things in the past are just amateur hobbyists. He actually works in the industry. I would imagine that gives you a different perspective on things like piracy. Pretty much any bin that gets posted immediately winds up added to those mega-torrents floating around. And we all have seen the carts on E-Bay with the you know what in the lower corner. Even though I always try to release bins, I also usually put some text in the manual saying it's ok to distribute the bin but you can't sell it without permission. Anyway, he's not finished with it. Perhaps he will change his mind by the time he completes it, maybe not. In the end, it's his to either release or not.

Dunno. Maybe. I have no long term plan for it, just kind of playing around.
-
Personal preference really. Plus lack of content for the driving controller. Just something else to use it for. Anyway, in my latest blog you'll find a version that lets you switch between the joystick or driving controller.
-
For those that don't look at the blogs - This has gone through a few changes since it last appeared in this thread. - new name - now uses the driving controller - there is no victory condition (game goes until Asgard is destroyed) - bumped up the score/hi to 3 digits - victory screen now level complete screen - initial enemy speed slower, enemy speed increases each level - ODIN!!! (a bit of digitized speech) You can get the new version from my blog: http://www.atariage.com/forums/blog/254/entry-7130-but-wheres-the-car/

Discuss Atari History with Nolan Bushnell
s0c7 replied to Albert's topic in Classic Console Discussion
That's a very interesting idea (assuming I'm envisioning it correctly), and I applaud anything that helps board games survive in the digital age. There would be the obvious benefits of only you being able to see your cards, moves, possibly dice rolls, etc. as opposed to playing on a console. I do wonder though, most people play the PC/Console version of a board game mainly when they don't have a opponent in the same room (either against the AI or somebody in another part of the world via the internet). AI & internet opponents would be welcome additions if they are not already in the specs. I don't see this replacing board gaming as we know it though, especially as "house rules" often come into play, but if it came with a large number of licensed games (or the ability to install said games as inexpensive add-on modules) I could see it doing well. Being iPad based will hurt it IMO, but this could be the killer app the iPad needs. I wish you luck with it. -
Tim, I don't want to get into a pissing contest with anybody over this. This sort of thing is a niche type of thing to begin with and it is obvious Mark is a "action" guy. I point him in the direction of Cave-In and that is that. My primary complaint with the review is he is attacking the game because it doesn't meet his idea of what it should have been. This is akin to saying Video Checkers sucks because it isn't more like Kaboom. And surprise, surprise - I prefer ASCII Star Trek to Star Raiders. The game was designed as a homage to very early CRPG's. Specifically Telengard. And yes, there are specific strategies to playing the game, etc. Anyway, peace to all. I consider this a dead issue. - David

Dave Dries (not Drees) did the artwork. This article may answer some of the questions you had - http://www.silvermoonxtreme.com/Closer%20Look/Closer%20Look%20Dungeon%202600.htm And to those who have not tried it yet (be sure to try the rom before buying), it is turn-based (in the vein of Telengard - and yes there is a lot of dice rolling going on behind the scenes). I am not overly fond of "action" rpg's.

If you can use Stella you should be able to use WinVice without problem. http://www.viceteam.org/

Given then estimated release date of 1400, I think the board game's copyright probably would have been expired by the 1970's. Unless of course Walt Disney got a hold of it somehow.

Sounds like he was going for a variation of this: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/10213/fox-and-geese Looks like there are a couple of C-64 versions: http://www.gamebase64.com/game.php?id=11579&d=18&h=0 http://www.gamebase64.com/game.php?id=2894&d=18&h=0

or Earthless...

Added the final beta docs to post with the rom linked above.
-
Now flip both difficulty switches to A.
-
Just like some of those roms, that was a beta manual. What was eventually released is up to date. I guess I can see if I have a later txt version and post in the Dungeon thread.

Thanks, glad you like it. I don't have anything else quite so complex, but if you want to look at some other things I've done: Bifröst (the most recent thing I've been experimenting with) - http://www.atariage.com/forums/topic/143125-bifroest-2k-2600-game/page__view__findpost__p__1737232 Cold War (from Stella's Stocking - NOTE: 2 player only) - http://www.atariage.com/forums/topic/136411-cold-war-fixed/page__view__findpost__p__1645367 Phantom II / Pirate / (Wizard - Easter Egg Game) My 1st cart. Hit fire 3 times at the title screen to access Wizard. - http://www.atariage.com/forums/topic/89758-phantom-ii-pirate/page__view__findpost__p__1188216 There are a few other odds and ends floating around. Phantom II/Pirate, Stella's Stocking, & Dungeon are the only things available through AtariAge.

You can get the Dungeon rom here: http://www.atariage.com/forums/topic/127378-dungeon-2600-release-candidate/page__view__findpost__p__1590573 I don't think the Stella's Stocking ROM was ever released. I know Stay Frosty & Cold War are floating around as self contained BINs. Grandma's Revenge may be as well.. can't remember. A search on those titles should turn something up.
-
The Floyd are still around, just not doing much together these days. Dave Gilmour and Roger Waters still tour from time to time (not together obviously). Search on either of those names and you might be surprised what you find. Dave doing Atom Heart Mother in '08:

AFAIK there is no issue with 7800's. I know several people who have it that use a 7800. According to Al, there are lots of Dungeon carts floating around out there now and there has only been one person that is known to have had a issue. Speaking of which.... The "super" monster thing is not part of the game and not normal. Sounds like the program may be getting semi-corrupted some of the time. I'm not sure what to tell you since this is the replacement cart. Seems like there is something about the combination of your hardware and the cart that just isn't playing nice.

Got a nice little addition to my D&Dish boxed collection in the mail today. @Marc - Love where you hid the key on the box.

3 - 5 people voted per game in the 1k category. 2 - 3 people voted per game in the 2k. The compo is finally completely dead it would appear.
-
I don't have a FB2, so I can't give you a definitive answer. Anybody have one and a Dungeon cart? The game does not use a SuperChip. To the best of my knowledge there is nothing about the code that would be considered out of the ordinary, but again without hardware to try it out on I can't guarantee anything. Hopefully somebody will be able to try it out and report back.

Indeed. The Triple-Breasted Whore of Eroticon Six. For those who get the reference, I say unto thee "42". - David
