  1.

Good! I would like stronger controllers.

I'm still enjoying mine. Love the concept, a small footprint, and I've had fun with it.

I thought part of the beauty of this system was the Stella emulation could be updated by the fan community through the micro SD card?

Yes, I am still happy with mine as well :)

  2. So, got it in and playing with it. I updated to the last posted community build until we are able to do the one remowilliams is going to post.

I am seeing a few Activision games that when fully inserted will not work. Just a black screen. Megamania is one of them. I can update with the other titles when I am finished testing. If I pull the games up just a little, they work fine. It is the same Activision titles that I had seen this behavior with on my Vader 2600 but not my 2600 Jr. I am waiting for a woody 2600 and will test on that as well.

Updated with games that exhibit this issue:

    Megamania

    Frostbite

    Stampede

    Seaquest

    Grand Prix

Yes, this was mentioned before. I have River Raid and Chopper Command. Both are doing this too

  3. Ok, so, there are a lot of pages to sort through and I doubt I will ever get to it. So I have a couple of simple questions:

If I buy a new retron77, can I now put more than 18 ROMs on the SD card? If no, my interest is still over unless a Harmony cart is compatible later. If yes:

Is it through a homebrew hack, or an official firmware upgrade by hyperkin? Is there a YouTube turorial?

Thats about all I'm curious about.

    Thanks guys

Yes, if you download the latest update, you are rid of the 18 ROM limit.

I know zilch about this kinda stuff, and with several people on this thread answering my specific questions - it went smoothly.

Get the new image for your SD card here:

    https://drive.google.com/file/d/1xb6Qo1785LWHtRgE9tNF41qqohqxGGoR/view?usp=sharing

Then I followed these exact steps last night, and it worked fine (put the new image on top of the old one that comes with the Retron 77):

    1. Download an unzip the .img file above.

    2. I use etcher from https://etcher.io/

    3. Install etcher, run it, and select the.img file you downloaded for the first option.

    4. Connect the Retron 77 SD card to your card reader, and select as the second option

    5. Burn the file to your SD card. If all went well, you should get a confirmation notice

    6. Copy your desired ROM files over to the 'Games' folder on the SD card

    7. Play Atari. Note that there are no page transition animations. It works, but the UI is still basic. This will allow you to play 99% of the games the current Retron 77 cart dumper will not read.

  4. What if you copied all the ROMs back to the computer in 1 folder - erased them off the card, and then put them all back again at ONE time. Would that solve it? I originally moved them over in different orders

  5. Last night, I just sucked it up and used the factory card - but, those steps worked 100%.

I dumped about 100 roms onto the card last night - now I don't have to worry about switching cartridges anymore. I do hope they change the menu, though. It is strange - it is not in complete alphabetical order. It's like some are, and then it starts back to "A" again. Then again. So, I have like 3 or 4 sets of games in alphabetical order, instead of ALL of them being in that order.

I returned that $38 128gb card today. Apparently I never noticed it was MB and not GB :)

  6. No. Just follow the steps Lord Thag posted for Etcher. I don't know what the issue was with my 512mb card - never got it to work but, I have since used the original 128mb card and a 2gb card with Etcher and both worked fine.

Just be very careful that the destination you select is actually the SD card. If you have other removable media on the system it may pick that up first.

Thanks a bunch. That did it!!!!

  7. Ok, I don't know where that old 2GB card is.

So, I AM going to use the one included with the machine. Others have done it with no issues.

So, do I need to format anything at all, or can I just erase all the folders and put the folders back with the new files.

    Or, do these:

  8. What I used is a program called Win32DiskImager. a very simple interface. I ran it as administrator, selected the image, selected the sd card and clicked write. That's about it.

Is that free? Did you basically image the 2gb card as a 128mb card?

  9. My recommendation is to use a different sd card so if you mess it up then you still have the original to use in the retron 77, you can write the image to the sd card without the step to format it.

Well, I will try to image the 2 gb card I have like the other guy did. Otherwise I needa find a 128 mb card someplace

  10. I'm not entirely sure the exact process, but it is possible to "expand" the FAT partition to occupy the remainder of unused space on the card. It would be best to backup the files on the FAT partition before expanding in case of error. Do not use the official SD formatter utility as it will overwrite the boot partition. I've used it before to restore the listed capacity on Pi-formatted cards.

I forget the software I used to burn Pi images, but it had the option to expand the image if the current SD card was bigger than the source image. I would assume other imaging software would have similar abilities. Please note you cannot build a FAT16 directory larger than 4Gb. Typically 2Gb and under cards use FAT and 4Gb and larger (up to 32Gb) use FAT32.

SDXC cards (64Gb and above) come preformatted as ExFAT, but you can use Windows command line or third party formatters to reformat it as FAT32. Most non-commercial or legacy devices do not support ExFAT file system.

OK - looks like I will use the included factory card.

So, IF I do that - THEN I reform at it, then do those steps, right?

  11. Thanks for the help.

I have an extra, old 2 GB card.

So, how do I make this work with the 2GB card?

Do the steps up above after I format? Or, some other step to make the 2 GB card work in the Retron?

  12. Well, I went and exchanged it for a 128GB card.

I don't wanna use the existing one for now - so I have a way to go back to at least what I had before, in case I screw something up. All this is new to me. I don't wanna turn my Retcon into a brick if I screw something up on the original card.

When I get home, I will try those steps with the new card and see what happens. Thanks

  13. Looks to me like the image was formatted for a 128Mb SD card. You'll need to expand the FAT partition to fill the remainder of the card. The tool I used to build my Raspberry Pi boot image had this option.

I just bought a 64GB card to use, so I do not mess with the original card.

If I do these steps mentioned by someone else, this will not work? It must be a 128GB card?

If I format the card and THEN do these steps, will it work?

    Steps:

  14. The ROM limit is not Stella's fault so it cannot be fixed by Stella. Hyperkin or a third party has to fix that.

    Ok, thanks.

I didn't know if downloaded a later fix would undo the fix that he released yesterday.

  15. I assume that shutdown is just turning it off, like a real console. It is impossible to 'brick' the OS or filesystem itself, since it is never saved to the SD card (it is all in RAM). The only thing that can possibly be corrupted is things that are written to the SD card. And the only thing doing that was Stella config file. Now that that issue is taken care of, nothing should be adversely affected by just turning the system off.

Any chance of fixing the ROM limit?
