Original stand up cab in my local arcade

I have Deathsmiles and Akai Katana, both really good!

Never heard of child of eden so thanks for the pointer, just got it off ebay for £3

Yes, despite the 30fps, I prefer it to the PS2 version due to the higher resolution. PS2 far easier to control though with it's better thumbstick. I have a couple of versions of it, prefer one of the beta releases with the different music.

Mines the 16GB version of that, same 10 A1 text. I formatted my card, copied all the CD files first and then copied my ROMs back over. Most worked fine other than the odd niggle. Then I was met with disappointment at how terrible some of them were 😂

Ah yes 7+9. I do have a USB mouse adapter in port 2 but it's not happened again, just that first time after the couple of update reboots

Hi Saint,
Had the below but seems OK now but thought I would let you know.
Put the new firmware on my SD card this is for the original Jag SD, turned it on, it updated.
Then before navigating and folders or trying to load anything I hit 0 to show the version (attached). Hitting B to ok/exit made it do a memory test then back to version info. Hit B again, another test. No way to get back to dir list.
Turned it off and on and now B exits the version info fine, tried it a few times and more power cycles. Not even sure how you instigate the test!
So all seems OK now, was just on the first boot after firmware update
Thanks. CD testing now

Remind me, just put the firmware.ovr file in the SD card root? I will try tomorrow on my SD and report back

Going by a reddit post you could try this one or similar for a VA0

ooh, downloading! Thanks

The two AW games are ok, graphics not great considering the time of release but that was due to the hardware. There was a thread with CDI versions of most of the AW releases on the forum where they were first announced but it looks like all related threads have gone unless I'm being stupid. I just run them all on a gdemu clone.

ah the memories now, qizmo(?) proxy and almost every key on the keyboard being mapped to messages etc, how we coped before voice comms I don't know.
Matches wouldn't happen if average ping times were more than 10ms difference etc

Never completed the single player game but Quakeworld however....years and years (good ones) of my life on it! First at work on my University working gap year then online after that. Few big LAN parties with hundreds of people. I was in the top UK Clan for a while and always the top division. Only briefly played Q2, just not the same. Came out of retirement for a Q3 clan for a bit but meh....

Have you checked in disk management to see if there are any blank/empty partitions? Unlikely if you have tried so many cards but worth a look. Anything caught in the SD slot?

18 hours ago, Reaperman said:I completely disagree about the B&W's screen quality. The original gb was a greenish, low-contrast experience even by the standards BITD. Outside of the NGP being released in an era when it really should have had a color screen, I don't think I've heard anything that negative ever being said about it.
I thought maybe NGP screens degraded over time (like a lot of the early color screens seem to), or my memory was otherwise off, but I just checked against a gbp, since my original gb's have screen mods. NGP still looks as I remember it. Lights are lighter, darks are darker, but I think it might do more shades than the 4 on game boy, since some of them kind of blend together until the contrast wheel is taken to incorrect settings. (NGPC's existence makes it pretty hard to find NGP 'color count' stats) Also of the 'color' games that play on that screen, many of them may not have been designed primarily with the b/w screen in mind.
Tried my B&W again yesterday. Contrast adjust makes a bit of difference but it is still so hard to view even in direct light, blurs a lot, I just don't recall the original gameboy being quite so bad but that's not really relevant. Maybe my screen has degraded as it definitely isn't playable. One for the shelf until someone brings out a new screen for it like you can get for the og GB. Hope they do as then I can at least fix my broken one

I have about 11 in my games room and 2 B&W ones (one with a dead screen). How they ever sold the latter is beyond me as the screen is barely visible, far worse than say an original Gameboy.
I bought one new back in the day when I worked in a shop next to a games shop.
To be clear, it's the 2xAA batteries/area which can leak if left for many years. I expect the cr2032 is fine as you often find them in ancient motherboards etc. You don't need one to actually use it but it loses the time and flags up the warning for a few seconds. The carts themselves save scores.
-
It's only 1-2mm slimmer or something so not a big difference..... The smaller backlit screen requires no modifications to the NGPC so is 100% reversible and it means you can actually play it without sitting under a desk light. Was just a pointer to the battery issues as they are common so still worth a look, take the batteries out if they pass it to you working.

Here's one I modded before with the smaller screen, you can see the printed bezel. Still totally worth it though as you can actually see it! I have one of the new larger screens to put in another one at the weekend

Few things,
1. Don't get a "slim" version as no after market screen available atm. Slim ones have a keyring/strap hole on the back in the top corner
2. Take the battery cover off and look for any signs of rust or corrosion. A common failure is people leaving batteries in, they leak and the board is wrecked. Even if it turns on I would avoid it if there is evidence of leakage
3. Check it with a cartridge in to make sure it all starts fine. If you power it up without one in then it should go to the calendar etc. If there is no cr2032 backup battery it will flash a warning but this goes after 10 secs
4. Buy one of Saint's SD/GD Gamedrive carts, seriously....the price of games has gone mad. OK there are still quite a few "cheap" ones but if you want to experience it all then the cart is well worth it
5. Backlit screen, SO much better. The original screen is ok but you need to sit under a light, get one of the new screens. The first ones were slightly smaller and you needed a bezel to take up the gap, these are still 100% worth doing as it transforms them. The newest screen is actually larger than the original and you need to trim part of the case slightly, also they are a bit more fussy on battery voltage etc
Neo Turf Masters is great, price going up. Puzzle bobble cheap and great fun. Metal Slug 1 quite good but 2 is better as the option button fires grenades instead of simply swapping weapons. Sonic also good.
They are region free and if you only want loose carts (get the GD cart!) then you could buy Euro/US ones

As a side note and from experience of doing about 5 of the smaller screens, you do need kapton tape or similar between the various layers with it all folded together, the kits used to only come with 1 bit of sticky plastic and so it was fairly common to get short outs etc so there's a chance it could be related to some of your issues

Hmm, I've had no issues with one of the earlier smaller screens and the SD cart. I have one of the new larger ones to install, perhaps this weekend so will see what I find, my cart is the older style although I will be using one of the new aftermarket see thru cases and not an original NGPC one.
I normally use rechargeables which will only be 1.2v each, normal ones are 1.5v so it will be a bit annoying if the new screen needs normal batteries but not end of the world and worth it for a larger display.

It's just weird that it does it a lot in Super Burnout, couple of times in Pinball Fantasies intro then pretty much never in any other game. You would think it would happen all the time surely

-To check for an odd intersection of tolerance margins between devices, you should try on a different television (plugged straight in).
-Check for misaligned, dirty, or oxidized pins in cartridge port and AV-out port.
-Open the case and clean out any dust/debris that may be causing intermittent connectivity across traces or pins.
Ok, tried it straight into crt then straight into old lcd via scart, component and rf, clicks with them all. Second Jag no issues. Both are definitely quiet in general though, clicky one more so
Tried taking metal shield off but the front wasn't budging and didn't want to damage it or slice my fingers
Recap?

US lot won't get that reference heh.
Will give those tips a try. Got an old lcd with scart and will compare the 2 jags
Thanks

OT: Might be a service menu where you can adjust the screen, I can on my B&O CRT from that era. Annoyingly some of my consoles shift the image slightly but most are ok enough to not bother changing it all the time. Can adjust all the warping etc as well. Mine is accessed by some hidden key press sequence on the remote
