HOTD is bad on the Saturn and that's despite it being my favourite retro console. It could have been a lot better. Luckily the local arcade has the proper machine!
I have Razing Storm which is pretty good. I like HOTD Overkill but not being able to skip the cut scenes ruins the game after the first few plays, unless there is a way I've missed?
Didn't realise 3 and 4 were available, PSN only by looks of it, will have to see if still available and cheap.
I have most gun games for the Saturn and Dreamcast which are rigged up to my CRT. Recently got a few good ones for the Wii as well, Ghost Squad, Gunblade and Machineguns double pack

Thanks @Mattroid I will do that in future. Most games don't matter, just Puzzle Bobble took a while to clear all 99 levels lol. Gives me something to do at lunch times anyway

Neo Turf Masters is one of the few which uses the SRAM save for instant on game state saves. Unfortnuately there's nothing I can do about this, I dont think. When the cartridge is turned on the NGP checks if the same cartridge is inserted as when it was turned off, if it is, it carries on and does the quick boot.
I know I started digging into this before, but I dont remember if I decided it was just getting too evil, or it was just not possible. The "SRAM" itself I seem to rememeber is just the NGP internal RAM (which there isnt much of), so I'm pretty sure it will have been trashed to some degree by the time execution is passed to me, so there's no chance of saving and re-instating it.
Something to investigate again at some point though.

Does sound like it would be impossible. If you somehow modified your cart so it acted like a real one on initial turn on then it would be in a loop for that one game only unless you removed your cart and powered it on once with nothing in I expect so it lost that SRAM data.
The option to do a manual backup would be good. As I'm back at my desk and not sat in my car as I was at lunch (lol), when you want to remove a file from the initial/quick launch menu, the only option is to delete it? Perhaps add the option when you have pushed B to write a copy of it back to the SD cart but with an incrementing character on it, puzzlebobble_1.rom or something if you follow then you can always revert back to that at a later point.

btw the backlit screen transforms it even if it is smaller! A full size is getting nearer to being available

I know the power led flashes when the coin cell battery is dead/missing/low but not sure on the main AAs.
Turf Master, that has the option to save the state and it turns off but doesn't work with your cart as I'm sure you know as presumably it boots the menu on next power on and so ignores what the game has set.
Perhaps you could implement a feature where if you held down say the option button as you turned it on, it would go straight into the last game so in this example the Turf Master save would work. Ok it would be lost if you went to the menu and another game.
Wonder why the game saves like that anyway, why not just do it like the others ie Puzzle Bobble do and simply have it's own "resume last game" feature in the menu
cheers

Hi Saint, owner of a Pocket SD (and one of the first Jag SD) carts, just wondering if you or anyone else has experienced this with Puzzle Bobble.
I understand some early retail Puzzle Bobble carts had saving issue and no names or times would be saved so it could be related.
The rom I have been using has been fine. I completed the 99 rounds of normal puzzle mode in various sittings, name and time saved fine. I then did a couple of games of vs cpu yesterday and it saved fine. Just now I did another round against I think the 4th character, won, it went to the screen after showing the 2 characters and froze. I had to remove the batteries as it wouldn't turn off. When I powered it back up all my save data was gone ie no high scores, only first 10 rounds in puzzle selectable etc.
I am using rechargeable batteries which might be getting low so I wouldn't if it was a power issue when it went to save but it's been so long since I let batteries go flat in a NGPC I forget if it just instantly turns off suddenly or screen gets dimmer etc. On that note I am using one of the chinese backlit screens and I'm sure it's not as bright as it was so could be low power but it all powered back up after putting the batteries in so just wondering if you have heard of something like this before or think it's just another issue with Puzzle Bobble which affected real carts as well?
thanks

Just download "sd card maker" for gdemu, literally drag and drop the files using Explorer, it sorts the order, force vga etc, takes minutes then leave it writing all the files to the SD card

Good to see a dedicated thread. Only got into the Saturn about 2 years ago, somehow got 7 of them now, despite it's limitations it is my favourite and most played of the retro systems I own.

Yer it works well although for actual NGPC gaming I use one of my real ones which I put a backlit screen in and SD cart so all the games on it

An old PSP emulates NGPC just fine. I bought mine with the emulators already on, no doubt there are quite a few on ebay. Also does most older stuff, MD, Snes, Arcade etc

Yes same versions as me. Its been running for 2 hours here in demo and I started a game on lv3, no issues.
Tried a different SD card?

Will look when I get home from work. Does it say on a sticker underneath or something? Mine does have the odd sound issue with real carts and on SD where it crackles but only in a couple of games, need to post a thread about that in the main forum but I've not had any sort of crashing with any game real or on SD

Just had a look at my files and card. Whilst I have renamed the rom to just Doom.j64, going by the time stamps I am using "Doom (USA, Europe)" and not "Doom (World)" which I also have so it could be that "World" one is causing you the problem. I had no issues even after power cycle and no flashing
22/08/2019 10:50 4,194,304 Doom (USA, Europe).j64

I hadn't seen them either. Just spent the last couple of hours playing some of them on my SD cart
is the Midnight Resistance music from the ST version? Impressive if so (I only had an Amiga growing up sorry...)
I noticed stunt car racer didn't save my progress on a restart, is that normal? Midnight resistance saved my high score
thanks for the games!

Fired it up, left it doing demo for 30 mins, played through from level 1 to 5, back to menu, started on level 3, 3 times, power cycles jag, 3 more goes starting straight on level 3, no issue....
Well except the terrible jag controller, oh I hate the d pad lol, fps games just no good on old style pads. Its actually quite impressive gfx wise, first time I've tried it. The version with music will be better
-
I will give it a go tonight as well. Does it freeze at the same point 30 secs in or is it irrelevant where you are ie if you start lvl2 and don't move, does it still sometimes crash?
-
Just tried it, very impressive
-
Yer I played puzzle bobble and turf masters so much back when I had my first one, didn't have any of the fighting games back then.

I have a pair of the Capcom 6 button controllers, there are a few on ebay looking right now, probably get one for £30/$40 dollars perhaps

Sounds like the lid isn't on quite right? There is a vertical switch towards the left rear if looking from above, near the power supply, that is pushed in by a bit of the lid when closed and that tells it to then check for a cd. If that switch has been bent or isn't working then it won't spin up. Could also be a loose connection if you have unplugged things and put them back in.
See attached photo, the black bit, push and hold it towards the back of the Saturn. You can try this with the top off and it should then start up the laser/CD.
DO NOT TOUCH THE POWER SUPPLY!

I bought a NGPC back in the day when they first came out and had a couple of games. Got another about a year ago and now have the backlit screen and SD cart. Some of the games I have now played really are good. Such a shame it wasn't backlit back then although I understand the reasons why not but also that more games weren't released on it. Cotton whilst being far too hard (for me hah) shows how good it would have been for shooters like the PC engine. Metal slug great, of course the fighting games and so on

The only problem I've found with one of my Move controllers at least is it seems to wander the aim/crosshair and I have to push which ever button it is whilst pointing at the camera to resync it if you follow. I have another one so should test that. Not had any issues with the Wii.
