My Tipi (PEB) hasn't worked for some time now, but today I thought I'd try to fix it.

Problem was that I would type CALL TIPI at the basic prompt and it would just hang.

Today I connected a monitor and keyboard to the rpi and could see it running and log into it.   I still got the hung blue screen.

I decided to reflash it using the latest image "tipi-sdimage-buster-2.17.zip" - first formatting with SD Card Formatter and then writing the image with Win32DiskImager.

Result: it still hangs exactly the same way.   I do see the red light come on on the PEB card as soon as i hit ENTER after typing CALL TIPI.

I've moved the PEB card to different slots - same result

I've removed all other cards from the PEB - same result.

    I've tried a different TI-99 - same result.

Any suggestions on what to try next?

    Thank you...

Just over a year ago my system had the same problem. Turned out to be problems with the RAM expander which had to be repaired...

  2. Frys has suffered the same fate as Radio Shack, there isn't much profit from real geek stuff so they expanded into general consumer goods and then laid off all the employees who knew anything because they cost too much. Now no real geek will shop there because none of the employees know anything. Same thing happened to Sears and who knows how many other stores.

  3. After much head scratching and gnashing of teeth its done.

Just an FYI, if you can get FujiNet-Flasher to run but it won't see the device try a different USB cable. The first one I tried didn't work but since I was on a cobbled together Linux live disk into a Mac I didn't consider the possibility. I finally dug out a Windows machine (and dealt with the fact that it hadn't been turned on for many months) and it also couldn't see my Fujinet device at which point I tried a different cable and it worked perfectly...

  4. Figures. I'm clearly not smart enough.

For my next magical trick I tried installing Windows in VirtualBox. Windows works but Virtualbox doesn't see the Fujinet and thus won't pass it to Windows.

For my next, next magical trick I'm thinking to make a boot USB of Linux for my Mac. Is there any flavor more likely to work?

  5. Hey all,

I run the MacOS Fujinet flasher but nothing happens. If I open it in a terminal window I see the following:

I'm running Mac OS 10.12.6, which I know is kind of old but it doesn't seem like that's my issue. A quick Google search suggests Python is missing which is probably true, I'm no programmer, don't even play one on tv...

  6. The power draw off a PI is pretty small, we're talking a max of say 2a @ 5v so maybe 10w at the most. Get a buck converter that has USB ports and 35ah wheelchair battery from Harbor Freight. That'll give you 20+ hours of run time without damaging the battery for less than $100

    FYI:

As for interacting with the TIPI board from the PI, there is a little interactive test program here: https://github.com/jedimatt42/tipi/blob/9074c4aa2668a37cabad9f02730c07ed940c8d52/services/tipi/TipiPorts.py#L41

you'd have to SSH into the PI, as 'tipi'..

    cd /home/tipi/tipi/services
    sudo systemctl stop tipi.service
    . ./ENV/bin/activate
    python tipi/TipiPorts.py

Then you'd need to go into Mini-memory on the 4A's EASY-BUG, and enable the TIPI ( C1100  1 ) then look at or write to the memory addresses the script is talking about... to see if the shift registers in the CPLD are working.

In the best of times I'm just barely smart enough to use the TIPI at all. I got through the commands above and get M5FFD = 0x0 M5FFF = 0x0 over and over.

I dug around and found my Mini Memory cart and did the tests in the troubleshooting guide, C1000 seems to act as described most of the time. Sometimes 01 is already there, in those cases when I shut the TI off the TIPI LED comes on and I need to power cycle it before the TI will boot again.

M4000 etc is always 00, up through M4029 anyway.

    M5FFF won't take a change.

Sounds like this suggests solder issues. I don't see any obvious problems on the board but I don't have any real magnification to examine it under.

I suspect we've hit my peak in the Peter Principle. If somebody can help me proceed using very small words I might be able to move forward, otherwise I'm going to need help.

  8. Hey Folks, I posted this as a general topic but was redirected here. My TIPI seems to be sick, it worked back in 2018, then life intervened and it sat.

I'm getting BAD NAME when I try CALL TIPI.

SIZE in Extended BASIC suggests the RAM expansion is working okay. The power supply for the RAM expansion seems to be putting out 5v as its supposed to.

I put an HDMI cable on the PI and it seems happy enough.

I've reseated everything, the sidecar into the computer, the TIPI into the RAM expansion, all the cables multiple times and at Arcade Shopper's suggestion the ROM in the TIPI. The cable between the TIPI and the PI is correct, it was still connected when I first tried it out and I reconnected it by the instructions several times.

The light on the TIPI blinks briefly when I issue CALL TIPI.

I had hoped to play some ToD tonight. Oh well, the fun of 37 year old computers...

Edit: Staring at the output of the PI booting up I realized it had gotten a different IP address than the one in my notes. I've now discovered that I can access the PI through its webpage. It seems to suggest the TIPI is ready but I'm wondering if that just means the service is running.

Is there a way to ping the TIPI from the PI side?

Edit 2: reading back through this thread I noticed the thing about tones. No special tones coming from my TIPI. At first boot I don't hear anything, FCTN= gets the normal single beep.

I put a good multimeter on the RAM expander power supply, solid 4.98v

  9. I'm thinking you're right, I dragged out an HDMI cable and keyboard. The PI shows up and I can login, I can see the TI99 services listed toward the end of boot and everything seems okay.

No speech synthesizer. The only difference between this config and the last time I used it is the power supply on the TI as my other one seems to have a bad connector. I guess I'll see if I can make the old power supply work one more time, then I'll try to reseat the ROM.

  10. Yup, again it worked a couple years ago. I unplugged everything and plugged it back in the same places.

I've noticed that when I do CALL TIPI the light on the TIPI flashes. I'm wondering if my problem is narrowing to the PI

  11. Yes and yes. This configuration worked in the past.

I got the case off to better troubleshoot, the LED on the RAM expansion comes on when I plug it into the TI but goes out when I power on the TI. To make the LED on the RAM expansion come back on I have to power down and back up, it stays on until the TI is powered on.

Edit: CALL TIPI gives BAD NAME so no response from the TIPI.

Edit2: The TIPI light blinks when I turn the TI on but then stays out. SIZE in extended basic suggests the 32K of RAM is available.

Edit3: If I remove the TIPI from the RAM expander the light on the RAM expander does not come on.

  12. Hey all,

After a couple years of being ignored my TIPI (sidecar model) is apparently mad at me. It doesn't seem to be recognized by my TI. The power supply is definitely putting out power, is the red light on the TIPI supposed to come on? Its been so long I don't remember...

What about the LED on the 32K RAM module? Its from Arcade shopper, same vintage, September 2018.

Was wanting to play some ToD tonight, guess I shouldn't have left it alone so long. ;)

  13. A user on Reddit directed me to this: http://atariage.com/forums/topic/270354-the-uav-blog-install-uav-ac-in-the-400/?hl=uav+400

which describes the 400 upgrade process pretty well.

I also ordered a composite video adapter from Tynemouth software. Now I'm debating if I should use both, use the composite adapter for my output and this to clean things up. I think I'll try the composite adapter first and see what it looks like, this board might get to live in my 130XE instead.
