  1. Hey, everyone.

My "Ad Lib Music Archive" @ www.diskman.com/presents/adlib was recently updated with a whopping 18 [!] new soundtracks. All music is recorded using special hardware that allows for 100% accurate results, i.e. no emulation involved whatsoever.

Here's a list of the new sets:

    4D Boxing

    Captain Dynamo

    Chip's Challenge

Commander Keen 4: Secret of the Oracle

    Elf

    Gods

    Golden Axe

    Home Alone

Home Alone 2: Lost in New York

    KGB

    Princess Maker 2

    Risky Woods
    Sango Fighter

Speed Racer in The Challenge of Racer X

    Street Fighter II

    Super Street Fighter II Turbo
    Test Drive III: The Passion

    The First Samurai

If you dig on YM3812 music like I do, this should be pretty nifty for you. I hope y'all enjoy it.

Even more new sets will appear at some point. When they do, I'll share updates.

    Have fun!

I would expect Woz to say the IIgs is the direction Apple should have followed.

Steve Wozniak seems like a nice guy, so if he does actually entertain such a ridiculous question as, "Does the IIgs qualify as an Apple II?", I expect he'll do it in good humor.

Now if Steve Jobs were still with us, and someone asked him that question, I can imagine him responding curtly with, "What the hell are you talking about?"

Which actually wouldn't be so bad, seeing as how it's what the vast majority of us seem to be thinking about this thread. 🙄

I really think the IIgs ought to have been part of the Macintosh line, sorry Woz, but it really would have sold better.

IIgs was initially outselling the Mac, despite Apple's best efforts to keep that from happening.

IIgs wasn't a victim of its name. Rather, it was a victim of a snooty company that was jealous of its own product.

How is this still even a thread?

Because it's about the Apple II. And the Apple II is forever.

I mean, should the IBM PC AT be called an IBM PC? It had a 286 instead of an 8088!

Hey, dig this: My IIgs has a NEC V30 in it, courtesy the PC Transporter card. While I'm using it: Does the IIgs quality as an Apple product? 😱

  5. Because I grew up with the IIc, I became used to and in fact charmed by its simple hardware and how well certain developers pushed it.

What I really appreciated was when games were actually programmed to feature music during gameplay, something that had to be perfectly timed as sound took up so much raw processing power. Some examples are Dig Dug and Force 7, among others. I just wish more programmers had challenged themselves with this, because, at least to me, it stood out and made the games more enjoyable.

Now if only Apple had embraced the Mockingboard, or something like it, and adapted it into later models of the 8-bit II, maybe we'd have seen some heavy support for enhanced Apple II music (hey, a guy can dream)... but c'est la vie.

And yet it would be more of a II series computer than the IIgs.

    Touché !

Also that statement made me chuckle, so thanks for that. I needed a good chuckle today.

But you make an intruiging point!

The IIgs definitely presents itself more along the lines that it's the, "Little Mac that couldn't," if only because of its name and incompatibility w/the Mac. And I never cared much for Macs. Ever. Which is part of the reason I've always felt a bit uncomfortable having a IIgs around. I really want to hold it in as high regard as I do the 8-bit models... but I just can't do it.

Hell, even the Trackstar line of unlicensed Apple II clones on PC ISA cards feel more like Apple II machines to me than the IIgs does, and that's saying something.

But in spite of it all, the IIgs is still an Apple II. And while I may not love it, I do own and operate one, and in that regard I do embrace it as part of the "family of II."

Anyways, the IIgs is kinda the last in the Apple II line.

The Tiger Learning Computer would beg to differ.

Hey!! There's a poll that would actually make sense: "Does the Tiger Learning Computer qualify as an Apple II?"

Under the hood it is an Apple IIe.

    Licensed from Apple.

    Running ProDOS.

But it's not made by Apple.

And it doesn't have a "II" in it.

Also, it's practically unusable: Talk about a WORTHLESS keyboard.

  8. Methinks this is a pretty silly poll, but @ least it got us talking about the Apple II: one of my favorite subjects.

While I don't personally need the IIgs, it is fun to tinker with and learn about how it works and how to use it. It helps a lot that it's a compact computer with external keyboard, because I do need a II with slots and the IIe is just too big a beast for my taste.

As far as the IIgs being "kludgy" and such, as has been suggested here, I agree. As an Apple II, something about it just doesn't feel right. Added to which, you have to waste precious slots & space adding upgrades like stereo sound and faster processing, that should have been there to begin with. That's wack, yo.

But even with its purposely hobbled design and quirkiness, it's still a proud Apple II. And because of that, I salute it.

  9. A reliable source leaked me the official, internal sales figures for this thing, and, holy ravioli! The guy behind it all must have retired to his own private island by now with a humongoid sack of cash.

And have y'all seen the reviews?! Outta sight. Personally I think he paid 'em off, becuz I think the product SUX.

(No, I am definitely not letting the anger and bitter disappointment of my order never arriving influence my comments.)

    Damn him.

  10. Today's website update:

Merry 2020, guys 'n' gals! Our first update of the year is, like the two updates that preceded it, all about scans. For one, I busted Block Buster out of its tight, repressive blister pack to get scans of the insert + English & Italian language instructions. And, two-hoo! There's scans of the Golden Free Trade Supervision box and instructions, from down Mexico way. Fab stuff, amirite?

Very interesting that your got an interview with John Young. There is in fact not much to say, apparently, but it's a nice dedication from your side.

Thanks! I love that commercial he's in. It's so ridiculous and over the top, and it served its marketing purpose because it sucked me in back then. If I'd have had the fundage to buy a game.com as a teen, I would have. (Eww.)

Anyway it was cool of John to participate. He seems to be a pretty nice guy, though I admit it would have been awesome if he'd answered one of my queries with, "IDIOT! NEXT QUESTION!"
