Would an HP T610 Thin Client make a decent retro gaming/emulation rig?
TheCoolDave replied to bfollowell's topic in Emulation
Ah, I understand fully what your trying to do. I went through the same exact thing. FOR the record, the only Wii Game I am running is Mario Cart BLACK (a Wii Hack) If you like the PI interface go to https://www.emulationstation.org/ There is a Windows version. It requires a lot of setup but, retroarch will do MOST of your classic consoles (they do have a 5200 and a separate 8 bit Atari emulator)..It's a great little program. You can take any emulator and use it with emulation station, you just need to edit XML for each console. A little tricky to setup (if your new at computers) but, once your done, its really a nice thing. Boot up the PC, run the Emulation Station (or put it in your startup group) Grab a controller, browse to system and browse to game...play away ! You can download the Windows version, and with a little reading you can get it setup. There is (I cant find it right now), where someone is making a updated version of the Windows version, that being updated from the PI version (that is always being updated)… a bit of googling would give you that. -

It would do what you want... Personally, I would stick with a desktop PC if your want to be serious about emulation and getting into higher end systems than a SNES... If you hunt around eBay under the small desktop...I found some i3 processor computers for as low as $75... You might get higher performance off it. I use a HTPC to do TV and I setup a Emulation Station on it.. I can run Wii games with no problem at all (Not including controller issues, as a lot require the controller to be moved)….it's a 2014 i5 2.90 ghz... Nothing too special... -
Why do people actively hate "pre-NES" consoles?
TheCoolDave replied to zetastrike's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Makes 100% sense. I hope tomorrow night, I'll get time to compare, playing original NES via composite and a Retron 5 via HDMI. I did have some long sessions of Kid Icarus and I noticed no lag and made it fairly far. I just love those Real Time Save slots... I just cant get that off a old NES... -

I think I got up to the tiger on my sit down last week, I didn't play much more after the test. I ran into a problem with his Spin attack but, it seemed that MY TIMING was off. Recording that video was so I could review from that angle to see if I noticed ANY slowdown/lag. I have a almost Minty NES, I just need to find the codes for each fighter (i'm sure I can google them).. I will try fight by fight to see what one I do better with. This will put this to bed.... There is a lot of factors why LAG happens, I have been reading about it for months now, why on a modern TV and gaming it happens. A good part of TV lag is due to HDCP, where the TV decrypts video, even when there is no HDCP on the content(all game systems accept streaming PPV movies on consoles). The panel has a lot to do with it but, not as much as the security of video does. The port I ONLY play games on my TV, has NO DHCP... lag is very little on this port. It's the primary reason why I only use this port on the TV. I kind of miss the CRT days because of this but, there is no way I could go back to that 65" TV that was 2 1/2 feet deep (rear projection)! -

Good to know... I know some thin clients are used the way I was talking... maybe I thinking of the wrong term. to the OP, sorry The unit he said above has a 24 + 5 DVI connector, that should be able to output HDMI with Audio with an adapter... as long as the video driver supports it. Windows 7 embedded is a very limited OS, so you would have to re-install Windows 7 if you wanted to play emulators... -

Still, I don't see lag.... as you say "lag city" I even posted this for you to prove what I see, just testing with Super Mario bros jumping with an original NES controller on my Retron 5. I've been playing Mike Tyson's punch out, pretty far into it, no problems. I know some parts I just stink at over the years but, it works fine. Also been playing kid Icarus...what a great platformer for it's day. -

They claim no storage. These are imbedded devices(I checked HP's site), not a full PC. You cant use them like your thinking. I am pretty sure this is more of a RDP type computer. They need a server to connect to, when you boot it up, it connects to the server to use resources off a remote computer. By the specs of the CPU, it should be able to run a little faster than a PI 3.... Why not look at something like this ? https://www.ebay.com/itm/HP-8000-Elite-Small-Thin-Desktop-Computer-PC-C2D-3-0GHz-2GB-OF-RAM/302944882667?hash=item4688ec0feb:g:VzcAAOSw0C9bYk-E:rk:4:pf:0 Cheap, small, full desktop type computer...has memory, just needs a HD... go buy a 60-120gb used SSD on ebay (SSD will boost performance).. under $30... and you have a full PC that will do Emulation Station or something of the sort(Id bet this does N64 fine, something the RP 3 cant do very well)... I'd stick with Windows 7 as Windows 10 has a lot of bloatware and needs more memory. There is a lot of options that would fit your needs as a cheaper older computer. You just need a computer to do what you need. There a lot of sizes to chose from.. I just did a search on ebay for "small desktop computer" and I found a ton of options in different prices but, as low as $5-20... -
New in box Atari 2600 promo only not for resale
TheCoolDave replied to Wolfman1722's topic in Buy, Sell, and Trade
Wow, nice boxes are worth over a grand ? Crap I need a new car -
Thanks ! If the RetroTink even had memory (to save the last input used), I would of stuck with it but, the only way to change it would be to go up to the device and physically hit a button. I wanted to automate all the back end, so there is no way I could use it. Yea, I saw and I've talked to him about it his SCART Switch (he is S-video modding one of my consoles). Problem is, I figure about a 11 of my 20 consoles CAN do SCART/RGB or modded to do SCART (not all will be hooked up SCART). A 3 or 5 port one is just too small for this project. I am looking at a 8+. And there is one...kind of expensive but, it will do 16 and it does IR. I don't think I would use all 16 but, it lets me expand later if I wanted to. The W-Hydra2 (it comes in at $263.25 US) is a 16:2 SCART switch box... crazy, huh ? Being fully IR controlled is something I really want, that seems kind of rare on SCART switches. https://lotharek.pl/productdetail.php?id=207 There will be 20 consoles setup in this cab, I want to be able to rotate consoles if needed. Some I might setup but, never play as another that is not setup, I want to play it more. I also don't want to connect consoles and be completely out of ports. It happened years ago on me, setup a bunch of consoles and when I wanted to expand, I was left with removing a console to add another, all consoles I played... *IF* I could get RGB (the best possible picture) out of 11 or more consoles, I want to be able to do it and DONT want to be limited because of my switch.

Not even close to complete... Not including Xbox One X, PS4, WiiU, Xbox 360... or any portable, or single game consoles... This is just the list of consoles I am deciding if I am going setup in my cab with 20 classic consoles...so only 20 can be used not including modern ones... Pioneer Laseractive with the Sega pack. NEC TurboDuo Sega Dreamcast Colecovision Playstation 1 Nintendo 64 Xbox (origral) Sony Playstation 2 Sega Master System Atari 5200 Atari 7800 Mattel Intellivision Emerson Arcadia 2001 Sega Saturn Panasonic 3DO Super Nintendo NES Atari Jaguar NeoGeo AES Nintendo Gamecube Sega Genesis w/CD/32x Magnavox Odyssey 2 Nintendo Wii PlayStation 3 Vectrex Atari 2600 Dam, I have edited this 3 times to update it....forget it, sticking with this list even though I missed a lot..

Anyone who is interested in progress here. I made a final decistion on the scaler. The RetoTink 2K was a nice option but, the limitations of not saving the last input if powered off, or not being to be remote controled killed it for me. It was down to the Framemeister and the OSSC. I ended up going with a Framemeister. I found a deal I could not pass up for one with the English conversion done (Newest English firmware and the remote cover), EuroScart adapter and component cable from a US seller. I'm looking into SCART options... As RGB, as suggested here and I have seen differences via "My life in gaming" on YouTube. Grabed a few cables to play with.. and looking for a solid SCART switcher… I posted a thread in hardware but, it's got no love, as I figured that would be the best place. http://atariage.com/forums/topic/285378-mega-scart-switchers8/ The plan is after the holidays to pick up the cab, and I will telling the whole story via my NOT setup youtube channel ( Look for "thecooldave" on youtube) and I'll update the thread here with progress...

Interesting to know. I did end up picking up a Sega SCART RGB cable and ordered a SCART to HDMI adapter BEFORE I ordered a Framemeister. I'll give the HDMI adapter a full test before touching the scaler.. One would think converting RGB to HDMI or component would give a much better picture than composite or S-video...
-
You could always go RGB with the SCART cable and get a SCART to Component video adapter or even HDMI. This should provide a much better picture but, with a extra cost with it.. S-video is better than composite by far but, requires a mod on the Sega...If you can do it, it's not that expensive for the parts but, if you need a modder to do it, it might be better looking into the RGB and converter thing for best results.

Oh, only Java ? Can they be played on my Note 8 ? Hmmm...need to look into this more... -
Hey all, I have had a few threads here on my retro consoles that I am trying to setup. I was about to stick with US standard of S-video with everything possible but, as I am leaning towards a Framemeister for my setup, this opens the door to RGB and can upscale/line double up to 480p over HDMI, this is claimed to be one of the best pictures you can get from Retro consoles. This thread is not for comparing the Framemeister vs. the OSSC. I still will have some consoles that have S-video and will leave them like that for reasons. The OSSC cant do S-video with out a converter of some type, that I don't want to deal with. So the Framemeister looks like my winner here. This brings up another issue. SCART switching. It's been a long quest for a lot of people. For 8 or more, you only have a few options and the price seems to sky rocket from there. If I am going this route, I need to go all in, as much as possible within affordable range (not going tp spend $400+ for switching). My setup is going to contain 20 retro consoles from the Wii back. HDMI devices will be treated differently (and thinking about starting a YouTube channel on this subject). This could have more than 8 RGB type consoles. Also if S-video and Composite is treated natively with SCART (as I have read) with no conversion, running the switch into a SCART port on the switch could simplify things a little. What I would like is Auto switching but, would love and PREFER a IR override with it. IR gives me what I really want is to force control the change in a automated setup via remote. Something I really want and pretty much need. So looking for options... and see what others are using. This is the larger ones I have found... gRetrostuf - gscartsw 8:2 about $220.. http://www.gretrostuff.com/store/gscartsw/ Over all good quality from reviews. No IR control but, auto should do. Can be daisy chained but, to get 15, it's going to cost $440+ shipping. Big cost. Lotharek - Hydra series. https://lotharek.pl/products.php?id=35 A selection of sizes... 8 to 16 (OMG !) switchers.. Kind of eyeing the W-Hydra 2. It's 16:2 that does everything. INCLUDING IR control (something that seems hard to find). Price is not too crazy compared to other options 999.00 PLN or about $264.43 US. A little pricey but, for what it offers, I don't know of anything else that could fill the bill. I don't know much about this W-Hydra 2, anyone use their series of switches ? Any good or bad on them ? What are others using ? Anyone using MORE than 8 devices that can do SCART ? This is the type of thing I am losing sleep over so I wanted to start a MODERN discussion on options or MODERN switchers..

Vintage Tech Hunters (Canadian TV show)
TheCoolDave replied to jhd's topic in Classic Console Discussion
The show is only available in Canada Found a little preview of the show...(almost like a cam of the show) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p175VMPdkP4 It's in a frame but, you get an understating of how the show is formatted. I think it's fairly entertaining for retro collector or fan. I think over all, it might do pretty well. The nice thing about Discovery is they will test shows in different markets, If it's really successful it will show up late night on discovery in the US and if successful there, they will try it on primetime. Odds are you will find it in the US after a while. Not too bad of a show, even though the episode I saw had nothing to do with video games. -
How about a Gateway Handbook 486? These were great in the day, about the size of a VHS tape with a full keyboard. I still have mine running Windows 95 with floppy attachment.. This is not my picture.. I remember, if you put in a PCIMA card running on battery. it would change from 45 min to about 5 min...it was trying to run a pop out network card Very small and Sexy for it's day.

Can Marble Man ever be released?
TheCoolDave replied to Avid Fan's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Anyone know this person who has the 2nd copy/machine ? Anyone willing to make contact to see if they are willing to allow someone to rip the roms ? If the answer is yes, does anyone here have the hardware capable of ripping the chips on a arcade board to a playable format for mame ? And for that Marble Madness app for Android you showed above...anyone know how to get it ? It's not available in the official store... -

Interesting...might have to try to hunt it down... -
Agreed 100%... There is always the problem with digital games. If you watch.. there have been a LOT of games that have been "delisted" over the years from Xbox marketplace. If the game is digital only, that game could be lost forever. As the disc game will be able to be played. If someone wants a cheap console and this is what they want, so be it but, there will ALWAYS be a disc based system. If the Xbox 2 comes out and it's no disc drive, it's going to be outrage just like what happened on the announcement of the Xbox one... Personally, I don't mind a digital game time to time, just very main stream games like COD or GTA because they sell Millions of them and they will always be around but, the odd ball stuff, always buy physical when I can. We are in a community of preserving classic video games....In 15-20 years, the Xbox one will be a classic (same with the PS4 for that matter) just like the PS1 and the original Xbox are starting to become. Digital games are the one we should worry about the most about going away for ever.

Even if the game is beyond bad. It's my choice if wanted to experience it and give my own thoughts of the game. On some accounts, it is my unicorn as I have been trying to play it for MANY Years now. It does not seem to come up towards my end of the world (unless I didn't know about it), so I have not been able to experience it. It's like the old quest about the E.T. carts burred in Mexico.... at least we finally got to know what happened there (I even I have 2 of the shirts from it) as for playing Marble Man...not sure if it will happen. -
"Must Finish" Games You Missed the First Time
TheCoolDave replied to wongojack's topic in Classic Console Discussion
On SMS phantasy star 1 is a must play... One of the best 8 bit games ever made. I just learned about a re-translation of the game (from the Japanese version). It's claimed that it's a much deeper story and a MUST play. You will need to play it via a emulator or a Everdrive. I am getting a system setup so I can play it on my large 4K tv...looking forward... Oh, Red Dead 2 or Phantasy Star Re-translation...hmmm lol http://www.smspower.org/Translations/PhantasyStar-SMS-EN In case you want to know more... -

I didn't even know this thread was here. I am a die hard Marble Madness fan. I even have the Marble Madness coin op machine. It's been a dream to play part 2, Marble Man. I wish they would release the rom, even though I have also heard it's not that great of a game. AT least if they released a rom, someone would figure out how to play it with a trackball, like the game should of been designed to do.
