Truth be told, modern TVs do lag as we have discussed here. On my current TV (as I discussed earlier in this thread), It's something that is driving my OCD nuts. Why once I moved from a 2 foot 65" 1080i Rear Projection TV to a 65" 4K LCD tv with gaming features ($2800 tv) my COD game has gone completely to crap. Someone on a hard map used to get a 20-5 k/D ratio and ever scene I got this TV, I would be LUCKY to get a 10-11. I need to know HOW bad the lag actually is on my TV...welcome to the Time Sleuth. An AFFORDABLE device to show actually how much lag a TV is displaying. https://shop.dansprojects.com/time-sleuth-lag-tester.html Limitations... It can ONLY check up to 1080p, so you might need a up-scaler with a little bit of math to figure out the differences over if your doing 4K... It will do everything from 240i to 1080p and you can add custom resolutions to it so you can set for the video you are trying use. This item starts at only $80... (comes as a board only, he will print up a case on his 3D printer for $15 extra).. I just ordered one yesterday to figure this out... At least now, I will know...and when I buy my next TV, I will TEST it so I know.

Fairchild Channel F Model 2 - A/V upgrade ?
TheCoolDave replied to TheCoolDave's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I see where the video is pulled(by the red clamp) but, I don't see where the audio is pulled from. Am I missing something ? I did a A/V mod to Odyssey 2, just tying into the ports on the board, the result over RF is 100% better, with out any ad on. So is this kit going to make a major difference in quality from just pulling from the ports on the board ? On the schematic you list the it as for the fairchild but, not the Model II. does it work the same ? -

Retrobrighting with just the sun
TheCoolDave replied to sprazzi's topic in Classic Console Discussion
As I was reading, after a few years Nintendo changed the plastic chemicals they used for the SNES. It was about fire safety. I have 2 SNES machines, As at one point I could not find my original consoles, I picked up one of the nicer looking ones I could find for a good price... It looks flawless like it was brand new. No yellowing at all. My original one that I had in the 80's, It looked perfect when I had it back in the day (I have pictures, it was a release day purchase) then it was bubble wrapped and stored in a sealed box, in my mothers basement for over 20 years. I pulled it out a few months ago, the top part is completely yellowed but, the bottom is fine. My bedroom was something I built in the basement with one, VERY small window (it was instead sharing a bedroom with my brother). It never left the house and was never in the sun. I wonder how UV light got to it when it was used or stored.... I was thinking of retrobrighting it to try to get it's orginal color back. I still need to investigate what model is a 1-Chip and what version to decide what model I will be using in my setup...but, working on some other consoles at this point. -
Right now, there is not a magic solution to all of this. There are some options The 33ms ping or lag, is the same thing across most modern TVs. They all have some, I have seen some over 90ms and my personal 4K tv does at 55ms (in 1080p) So RIGHT NOW your only real solution is to find a MODERN PC monitor that was designed around gaming and is large enough to fit your needs but, even higher end monitors come with a little lag (under 10ms for the better ones). A really good, large, no/very low lag PC monitor is very expensive. LG announced they are working on the problem. On the NEW 2019 OLED TVs (very pricey right now), they claim to be offering a "Low lag mode" on their TVs so this gets dropped to a minimum. Real world tests for EXACT amount of lag on this models are unknown at this time. If your looking for the retro consoles to play, A line doubler device is your best option to view them on a modern TV. Something like the framemeister or OSSC. All this does not solve light gun games... A lot of 3rd party updated devices designed for modern TVs is always hit or miss, I've never had any luck with this one..

I was reading about this product to able to use with Emulation Station... easy config...

I have 2 of them...My original one has lines down the screen but, it works fine. My 2nd one, that I picked up like 7-8 years ago (as I could not find my original one at the time), is in mint shape and works 100%. I picked it up as a non working one and there was corrosion in the battery department...and I got it working perfectly. I do have a bunch of others...game boy color and a few other models... but, just talking about the original game boy It's really hard to go back to one of these systems today after owning later portable consoles and having a cell phone with a OLED display. Never realised how bad the scrolling tracers were....but, I will pop it out to play with it time to time..

Do you have a fav PC gaming brand/ecosphere?
TheCoolDave replied to Keatah's topic in Modern Console Discussion
As for video cards, Nvidia all the way, I had AMD in the past and had issues, moved over and will never go back. CPU INTEL only and motherboards, ASUS is my preferred brand. This time around (about 3-4 years ago) I built a new machine, I was shopping around for mother boards and decided, let's give MSI a shot. I picked up a MSI MPOWER X99a motherboard ($350+ board). Plenty of overclocking features, specs seemed pretty awesome of a board. Grabbed a Intel 5820 (i7 3.3ghz 6 core CPU), and 32gb of DDR4 ram and built a system. Worked great till I needed to update the bois. Every time I updated the bios, the system board would fail (followed everything step by step, there is no way I could of screwed it up). This required gutting the board, sending to MSI and wait about 2 weeks to get a replacement board. Nothing but nightmares with support. When it works, it seems to work good but, support, FORGET about it... I also had 2 memory chips go bad and the memory OEM blames the motherboard...I was not overclocking at the time and even though the memory was designed for overclocking I also grabbed a lower end MSI motherboard for my Home theater PC, that I filled with a i5 2.9ghz quad core and 16gb of memory. A bios update on this resulted in the system not booting. I was able to FIX it but, most non tecky people would not be able to do the complex command lines to re-apply the old bios to get the system booting again. MSI's video cards I have never had a problem with and other products over all, no problems. My advice, avoid MSI for main boards. I always used ASUS in the past and they were always rock solid and none of the issues that I had. I've been working in IT for over 20 years,, Trust me, I am not a NOOB when it comes to computers and even hacking bios, if i need to but this was a real PIA.. -
Everyday is Halloween, scariest video game?
TheCoolDave replied to cimerians's topic in Modern Console Discussion
I'm thinking Metro 2033 (even newer ones too), there has been a few over the years... You need to keep in mind, I play every game in AT LEAST 5.1 audio, so every effect from every corner you can hear. The surround effects in this game really brings it alive. I know for sure it freaked the crap out of me, it kept me on the edge of my seat and many, many seat jumping moments.. I do remember one level, where I was shaking I was so scared about what was around the corner... Yea, I really get into it... -
Flashcart and Multicart List - All systems
TheCoolDave replied to PsychedelicShaman's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Mods...Can I ask ? Why is this thread not a sticky/pinned thread ? It's one of the things I have never seen before... and always lookling for this information so I can keep my orignal systems in flawless shape... -
It's the problem with games of this time frame. I always thought of doing this collection as well. Games that we common that you could get for $10-20, Now ebay sets the price on a lot of these classics. Put common games for $75, and if they only have 1 on ebay, it's what it costs, depending on how much you really want it. Finding these games at flea/tag markets are getting harder and harder to find, and even harder with it's box or manuals. The word is there was 114 US games released for the SMS. How far are you along ?

So, the one with removable controllers will not detect the keyboard. It will hit reset but, hitting the reset button seems to have some affect. On the one I want to use the pins are damaged, if i put a keyboard ribbon cable in, it just pops out. After a few weeks playing with this, I pretty much gave up... As this is NOT an expensive console, I made an low offer on a minty looking one (FAR better looking than any part I have) and like 10 boxed games and it was accepted. Another untested but, this comes with the original box and it looks clean (no moisture damage so it looks like really good odds I'll get a good one), so odds that with a little cleaning this will be the one I use. I'm going to try to get one working out of the both of my older ones, I think the original one kind of works and I should be able to tweak that one... The removable controller one, parts or t parts for someone who needs it. Now i need to rebuild the controllers, as none of the ones I have seem to work...

Agreed, I have a nice size stack but, I might be selling them off now... I was a big supporter of HD-DVD back when it came out and had tons of movies at one point. I still have my Xbox 360 HD-DVD player that I got brand new... but, it's stitting in the box now...
-
Oh, that looks fun...Might have to back this one..

Needs some mega time with retr0brite...but, interesting... Good luck with your sale
-
The seller would of made more money if he showed the full setup with the games as the first picture, nooob mistake on ebay.... Still $21 is not a bad deal at all. I was expected a very high end game or something on this one... Am I missing something here ?

Sony says its new PlayStation is more than a year away
TheCoolDave replied to 0078265317's topic in Modern Console Discussion
As long as "The Last of Us 2" comes for the PS4.... I'll be happy -
Isn't the connectors brass ? What I do with all my NES games... Pull them apart (screws easy to access on the back). polish the connectors with Brasso. They come out with a mirror finsih. I do a follow up with some rubbing alcohol, to clean up any left over mess. You know, I have not needed to "blow" into a NES cart for years... but, after the new 72 pin connector, not a single dirty cart is allowed in the system. It must be cleaned and polished before it can be played on that system

10 reasons Mega Drive is better than Genesis
TheCoolDave replied to Flojomojo's topic in Sega Genesis
Everything said was an opinion. Maybe if you grew up on the "other side of the pond" you would view it that way. But, in the US...Nope...
