I now understand why so many people are upset about the crunch programmers are put under in the game industry. This stuff sucks.

What I remember about most of these long, difficult projects was how much I learned and grew through them. Not great situation if you have a family, but for a time in my life it wasn't a bad thing (as unpleasant as it seemed at the time). One project I was helping with for the last couple months tallied 7 divorces on the team by the end of it (thankfully not me).
On one particularly long, difficult project I remember driving home after 11pm every night, and I'd always turn on the BBC world news. Listening to the war stories and horrors of what was going on in some parts of Africa at the time put my extra couple hours working on a video game in perspective.
