  1. I didn't get an SNES until 2019, but what made me want one so bad was to replay Super Mario World, since I had only ever played the remake on GBA. Then after getting that I got to explore so much more of the library, IMO one of the best software libraries of any console.
  2. Sorry for dipping so hard, but I am no longer ill. Thank God it wasn't Covid, but boy it really kicked my butt hard. I'm only now well enough to return to school.

Zinc shrinks your winky? That explains why my little buddy is suddenly so small! Well, maybe small isn't the right word. It's growing backwards now and is poking out of my tooter hole. It hurts when I sit. :D

@MikeDijital777: nice to see that you've learned absolutely nothing since your earlier pee-pee smacking.

  4. NES-Style 7800 controller arrived in the mail. Now I can finally stop destroying my hands with the Pro-Line.

I've been using an EdLaddin Seagull 78 for the past few years and love it. I much prefer a Sega Genesis pad over the squared-off corners on an NES-style pad. But nearly anything beats the PainLine!

      BydoEmpire

Still prefer a real joystick for the 7800.  Most of the games don't feel right to me w/ a dpad, but at least you won't get carpal tunnel from the PainLines!

Here's a picture of the controller. I'm in love with the stripe.

  5. This game uses so few colors that I think using one of the 320 modes would be pretty doable. If that's something you're interested in
  6. The game I'm designing for the 7800 is isometric, which makes me wonder if we will ever see a Marble Madness for the 7800.

    1. SlidellMan

      SlidellMan

If Marble Madness does come to the 7800, it has to have track-ball support.

  7. After much deliberation, I am starting the software plan for my first 7800 game. Once I get through the design period I'll be sure to make a thread for updates. Excited to finally be doing this.

Great, I look forward to it. If you need any additional help for graphics, feel free to send a PM.

  8. I've always wanted to see Shinobi on the 7800. I'm not sure why though lol.
  9. I can only imagine having a homebrew game that uses the Minnie sound capabilities. That would be amazing to see!
  10. This looks amazing! As a big fan of the original game, I approve
  11. I'm only now realizing that I started the LadyLady 7800 demo over 2 years ago... doesn't feel like it's been that long at all. I hope that I can finish it this year then.

Yeah! I have a couple screens completed past the title screen. I have a thread where I post updates: https://atariage.com/forums/topic/302017-ladylady-graphics-demo/

      R_Leo_1

At the moment, LadyLady would be too complex of a game to jump into making. So for now it'll just be a graphics showcase, and maybe audio. I do plan, however, on making a game after this demo is finished, but the two projects wont be related.

  12. Got 3 Genesis games for 20 bucks today :)

Man, I remember back when West Coast Video was closing in my town.  They had a video games section in the store and trays of Genesis games.  They were like 20 for $3!  Unfortunately for me I didn't have a Genesis at the time so I passed on the offer.🙁

  14. Anyone have some advice on buying a 5200? I.e. best place to get one, some things to consider controller-wise etc.

    1. masschamber

      masschamber

"dead" consoles that don't power up usually have a single chip that has gone bad, as a bonus it is off the shelf and as an additional bonus it is typically socketed. and costs like 83 cents.

    2. eightbit

      eightbit

Look heavily for some kind of adapter to use as a replacement for the original controller. You will not have a good time with the console with that original controller....even if it works. The Wico stuff is expensive and overrated. When I received my 5200 the person I purchased it from made and included an adapter that has the dial pad and accepts a normal Genesis controller (with both buttons mapped to it). This console is REALLY enjoyable with a proper controller.

I would suggest a flea market, but the only one that has an Atari vendor is on Menge Ave. north of Gulfport, MS. Don't know about Florida, however.

  15. Slowly becoming more interested in the Atari 5200, this may prove to be a problem...

Since you need the Trak-ball Controller, we're talking like a square yard of real estate here. I think it's only bested by the Coleco Adam (the printer is the power supply!).

Oi! The Sears Heavy Sixer is 'The Big Sexy' Not the 5200. I think you're getting your console pet names mixed up. 😉

  16. Finally purchased a Soldering station for Christmas this year. UAV mod here I come!

  17. Made my first video game for a school project; You can  play it here: https://peakreacher.itch.io/strikezone I'll be discussing the game at an expo the school is hosting. You can watch me talk about it at noon on twitch: www.twitch.tv/FPMCLUB Would love any feedback if you have the time. Cheers.

  18. I now understand why so many people are upset about the crunch programmers are put under in the game industry. This stuff sucks.

Not for all people, there is a certain amount of pride involved.  I once worked the entire month of December and slept in the office a lot.  Shit, I even slept under a desk at Namco's headquarters in Japan. LOL

What I remember about most of these long, difficult projects was how much I learned and grew through them.  Not great situation if you have a family, but for a time in my life it wasn't a bad thing (as unpleasant as it seemed at the time).  One project I was helping with for the last couple months tallied 7 divorces on the team by the end of it (thankfully not me).

On one particularly long, difficult project I remember driving home after 11pm every night, and I'd always turn on the BBC world news.  Listening to the war stories and horrors of what was going on in some parts of Africa at the time put my extra couple hours working on a video game in perspective.

  19. Just got an Odyssey 2 controller to try with my 2600, been trying to find a good joystick-style controller because I hate using the pro-line joysticks. Hope this one is good!

Slik stiks are pretty cool too...Just another thought,  in your quest...or SEGA Genesis pads, Europads, NES Pads (Wired up to work).   Or save up and see EdLaddin...https://edladdin.com/

He's on AtariAge and in the AA Store as well :)

@GoldLeader Funny you mention Genesis pads, as that's what I have been using primarily to play 2600 games, since I got my 7800 a few years ago and it's great as a replacement, if one wants to use a D-Pad. However, I've been dying to feel the nostalgia associated with using a good joystick, as many on here and other pages have vouched for it.

Some O2 controllers are hard wired.  Mine was, but my O2 back then was dead so opening it and removing the controller was easy.  Not having a soldering iron back then and just twisting the wires together....  Well, not a great plan, but worked at the time.. ;-)

  20. I'm starting to think Crystal Castles on the 2600 is my favorite 2600 game. Either that or Enduro.

Both good choices!  For me it's Dark Cavern.   Seems like every time I fire up the Atari,  even if I play something else too, I end up back at Dark Cavern.  Other games that have been like this in the past for me include Midnight Magic, Pitfall! and Yars' Revenge.

@AAA177 I really enjoyed the arcade original, and this one captures the spirit extremely well for a 2600 port, it also has excellent sound design carried over from the arcade, and it helps in making it so addicting. Also it's just nice to have a 2600 game with more than a few screens lol.

  21. Idk why I love the William Shatner VIC-20 commercials. Something about the style of early 80s ads is very captivating.

  22. Just got a copy of Karateka on the 7800 today, and I have absolutely no idea how to play it lol. Does anyone know where I can find the manual for this one?

I played it on C-64 more than any other platform, I think it was the Spacebar to change stance since they used single button 2600 controllers...I had to use my toes to hit the space, as with a lot of other games....I learned how to play Raiders of Lost Ark using my feet to control the inventory joystick (looked like a f'n orangutan, but it worked)

I think in that game you're supposed to just walk the Earth with your bedroll until some local bully gunslinger harasses you, and then you beat him down in slow motion.

  23. Pole Position for the 2600 arrives in the mail today. Ever since I played the 7800 sequel, I've become interested in other ports of the game.

I love comparing ports of the same game for different systems. Sometimes I take a picture of all the carts together to get a "family" picture. I have Pole Position for the 2600, 5200, 7800 (PP II), Atari 8-bit, Intellivision, TI-99, Vic-20, Commodore 64 and the Vectrex.

I remember how excited I was when I got 2600 Pole Position for Christmas as a kid.  I still have a soft spot for the game and find time to play it every now and again.

Pole Position has a special place in my heart.  The closest restaurant to my house when we moved in 1980 (and one of 2 within 15 miles I will add) had a stand up in the lobby.  We'd go there at least once a month for dinner and mom&dad would give my brother & I a handful of quarters to "go play" while they were having their margaritas :)  I was so amazed when I got a copy for my Atari 400.

  24. This is perfect, just the explanation I needed. Was able to reach the code in my second bank just fine now Once again, thanks for the help and apologies for the constant questions 😅
