I have raspberry pi 4b 2gb ram, 1.5GHz quad core CPU. I have lakka with retroarch installed. It has an old version of Stella (2014) on it. Any game that relies on flicker i.e. Joust and Asteroids is unplayable as certain elements seem to appear one or the other. In Joust for example you either see your character or the enemies never together unless you turn off threaded video. However once I do that everything runs at a crawl. A Retron 77 using stock firmware on the same tv does not exhibit these issues. I would almost be inclined to just stick to the Retron 77 since I have it updated to Dirty Harry's latest firmware but then I noticed a minor issue with Golden Axe for the Genesis. When you kill an enemy normal they fade away and then disappear, on my pi the enemy just disappears. Once again turning off threaded video fixes the issues but everything is reduced to a crawl. Does anyone know what the root cause of this could be? Is lakka just flaky?

Can't speak to what is wrong, except try to make sure it is all the way switched stick mode and plugged in all the way. Also try a 7800 controller to make sure there is not damage to the 7800 controller port. Finally, if you have a Seagull 78, you can try using stick mode through that to see if there is something wishy-washy about the plug connection directly to your 7800 as it should still work for stick mode, but not paddle:
Definitely not either of my 7800's controller ports. Neither have issues with a proline, genesis controller, modded nes controller or even hyperkin's trooper. My guess is this is a case of Hyperkin's world class quality control rearing it's ugly head again.

Are there known issues with ranger and the 7800? The controller works fine on my Retron 77 but suddenly stopped working properly on both of my 7800s. In stick mode, I cannot move right or straight down. I always make sure that I set the mode on the controller before I turn on the machine

I have the portable but do not have the classic console but I believe it's basically the same. I personally like it. Is it flawed? Yep. I think the main thing you need to ask yourself is how important is sound to you. The games play well for the most part but the sound is off. How off varies by game. I thinks these Atgames Sega systems take more of besting than they actually deserve.

I just got my 7800 UAV mod back from Jesse. The work was excellent but what was even more impressive was his level of communication through out the whole process. Highly recommended. I will definitely hire him again!
Thanks Jesse for providing this service!

I want to preorder a Dragonfly with pokey and Yamaha in purple.

Finally got to spend some time with this game over the holidays. What a great addition to the 7800 library!

By clicking defaults under inputs (I think that's where I found it ) fixed the issue. The fire button on paddles doesn't work well but I think that is a known issue that is being actively worked on.

I upgraded to 6.4 today. After the upgrade, the 2nd controller port stopped working. I still had the stock sd card so I tried that and the 2nd controller port was functioning again. I tried a trooper, ranger and a original controller all the same result. Is there another step that is needed to get the second controller port working in 6.4?

I have a 8bitdo M30 that I like to use with my cellphone. The clips that 8bitdo sells are crap. They are two pieces and block the charging port. I have had two of these break in under a year. Does anyone know of any other more reliable smart phone clips for the M30?

Thanks that should do it!

1. Trying to save money? Buy a Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+ as RetroPie will run just fine on it for the emulators you're interested in. There are a remarkable array of retro-themed cases, including ones that look like an NES, Super NES, or even a re-imagined Atari 2600.
2. But, it's so cheap you may as well go for the high end and buy a Raspberry 4 Model B with 2GB of RAM or more, although RetroPie itself won't really benefit from the extra memory. There are a variety of form factors, and a better fit for maximum performance because you may want to play games for a Sega Dreamcast, Nintendo 64, or Sony PlayStation much better. In that case, a cool cooling case like the Argon ONE with a fan HAT may make sense.
Most people opt for cheap USB gamepads, but you can use modern Bluetooth controllers for the Microsoft Xbox One or Sony PlayStation 4. A favorite are any of the controllers from 8BitDo. If you want a new dedicated controller that will handle just about everything in RetroPie, it's hard to beat the 8BitDo SN30 Pro+.
If you insist on retro-authenticity, you may consider:
1. A good arcade controller like the Atari Dual Fight Stick with Trackball USB. They even sell a version with an RPi 3B+ inside it already.
2. Use your original DB9 joysticks with a USB adapter like the 2600-dapter D9 or a Bluetooth Wireless Atari Retro Joystick and Paddle Adapter.
Good luck. It's really amazing to suddenly have effortless access to just about everything. One bit of advice: as you learn about RetroPie and start playing with configurations, have a USB keyboard handy as it makes everything a thousand times easier. Plus, a keyboard is handy with some of the emulators sometimes, like if you're playing Atari 2600 games with an original Atari CX40 Joystick and need the keyboard to trigger SELECT or RESET/START!
Thanks for all the info.

I picked up a super retrocade for $35 and liked it pretty well however now it just freezes up. I thought it might be a good time to move to a Retropie. Basically I am looking to run:
Arcade
Atari 2600
Atari 7800
Game Gear
Genesis
Master system
Nes
Snes
I am also looking for both composite and HDMI out.
Are there any kits in particular kits/installations people recommend?
Thanks in advance.

I just got mine yesterday. Only played it for a bit to make sure it worked. Can't wait to play it some more.

I just tried this out on my phone using a 8bitdo m30. Very impressed. I thought for sure being browser based, it would be laggy but it's not and actual runs games better than prosystem through retro arch. Really nice work!

Just got an UNO cart and that did the trick!

I definitely think I had a bad cart. I don't think Disc Replay tests games before they sell them. I have had a few bunk carts from them. I ended up returning it. I am going to try getting my hands on another copy.
15 hours ago, -^CrossBow^- said:Double Dragon has always worked for me so no issues with that game either.
How far do you play the game for? Sometimes it doesn't start resetting until I hit the second screen.
Thanks for checking into that! I know I'd probably want that switch at some point!
-
@-^CrossBow^- Defender 2 does work on mine. I wonder what they might have done differently between stargate and Defender 2? The circuit is just clipped at one of the legs. Should the rf shield be difficult to get off? I was afraid to apply brute force because I don't have a soldering iron and didn't want to rip anything off the board by accident.. I had read you were just supposed to be able to bend the tabs back with a needle nose. The few tabs I saw were kind of mangled. They were sort of twisted.I straightened them the best I could to fit the slits but there was still zero movement which made me think I'd have to rip it off.
-
I opened up my '88 which is UAV modded. I was having difficulty getting the rf shield so I shined a flash light and saw that the c64 was indeed clipped which I thought might be the case because dark chambers does not work. I am leaning towards it might be the Pitfall 2 cart now. There are a few 2600 games that work on my 87 but not my 88 - Dark Chambers, Kung-Fu Master, Gravitar and Double Dragon. Kung-Fu Master, Gravitar and Dark Chambers are all black screen. Double Dragon keeps resetting itself once it starts playing. I am wondering if that timing circuit affects more than just Dark Chambers on certain runs of the 7800? The Double Dragon issue really makes think that is the case.

How difficult is the mod? Is there documentation?

I have not. I don't currently have one.

I have 6 7800's early to late and they all work with Pitfall 2, I had a problem like that with Crash Dive and it was a US seller, but indeed a PAL game, got a NTSC cart and it worked just fine.
I bought it at a local shop. It could just be the cartridge. I have gotten bad carts from them before. That's why I was wanting to see if there was a know issue.

9 hours ago, -^CrossBow^- said:Not positive on the '87 unit but your '88 unit likely has the extra timing circuit that was mentioned a bit further up in this thread. It is listed as a resistor but is actually a banded ceramic capacitor. Just have to clip one of the legs off that capacitor to disable that part of the circuit and restore several of the troublesome Activision games that didn't work, back to working status again. Assuming the cartridge port and games are cleaned and making good contact still.
Is this something a noob could do? It sounds straight forward.

I recently picked up a Pitfall 2. It doesn't work on either of 7800s. One is a 87 with an expansion port and the other is a 88 without one. The best I get is screen rolling but its very hard to even get it to that point. I also have the 2600 lock on adapter so seating isn't really issue. I wonder if it's the cart or my 7800s.

Lakka/Retroarch Threaded Video issues

Looks like it was a combination of an outdated build and my tv. Stella 2014 and a more modern version of Stella are included so Asteroids and Joust can now be played.
