Later 2600 games aka "The things that should not be"
envytomdead2 replied to envytomdead2's topic in Atari 2600
Reviews online. the videogame critic is one example. He trashes pretty much every game on my list. There are other reviewers I have read/watched online but I'd have look for them again. Here is one for Kung Fu Master: http://www.atarihq.com/reviews/2600/kung_fu_master.html A sort of meh review of commando https://www.freezenet.ca/review-commando-atari-2600/ -
Later 2600 games aka "The things that should not be"

You are right most people do seem to like Solaris. I think its more so the arcade ports people don't like. Maybe because they already existed on more advanced consoles? I love double dragon too. While it is flawed, it is very playable once you figure out how to pummel your opponent with elbows. I have beaten it multiple times and very easily make it to mission 3 even when I am having a bad game. In 87/88 I think there may have actually been more NES style games on the 2600 than the 7800 -
I have to say I love the mid to late 80's 2600 games. Kung Fu Master, Commando, Solaris, Ikari Warriors, Double Dragon (yes, Double Dragon), Desert Falcon, Rampage, Xenophobe, etc. I know a lot of people felt these should have never been made but I contend that if they came out in early 80's they would be looked upon more favorably. I originally had a 7800 and around 87/88, there were virtually no NES style games for it. I remember getting Kung Fu Master for the 2600, I was so thrilled to have a NES style game. What is everyone else's thoughts? Love them? Hate them?

I received mine. It's very nice to not have to rip cartridges out of my 7800. I often play when my daughters are sleeping in the room across from ours. I used to always worry the noise was going to wake them every time change a game.

Why is no one talking about this new Hyperkin Genesis HD clone?

Interesting, through HDMI? When did you purchase yours? -
Awesome thanks!

Just want to make sure I am on the list and when/how do I pay?
-
I'd like one of these.

I'm not sure if it is socketed I bought the 7800 of eBay. I suppose I could contact the seller. I did suspect it might be a RetroTink/flat screen so I moved all of my testing to a crt via composite. Empire Strikes works for me as do the rest of my Activision games - Pitfall, River raid, Kaboom, chopper command, stampede, keystone kapers, Enduro, Commando, freeway and pressure cooker. It's just those 5 games I mentioned it doesn't like for some reason.
-
So do you think my issues are related to the 7800 itself or do you think something went wrong with the mod? Dark Chambers - black screen Kung Fu Master - black screen Gravitar - black screen Double Dragon - starts but keeps resetting once you try to start the game. Battlezone - shaky screen
-
Thanks for doing those tests. It must just be something with that 7800 I bought. I probably should have just had my original modded. I guess if I want to play those games its my rf only 7800 on a crt or the retron 77 on a modern tv.

I'm curious to see what you find!
-
Yeah that GBA cart is pretty awesome. That and that little Coleco sega handheld are my go to for portable sms/gg
-
Ok so I tested the rest of my 2600 games and found two more problem carts Gravitar and Battlezone. Battlezone technically works but the screen is a little shaky. Now I am wondering if there was an issue with the mod because of the shaky Battlezone screen. Ultimately 4 games out of 70+ games isn't bad and probably isn't worth sweating.

Prolines get a bad rap but I think the diagonals are great on that joy stick so Double Dragon and Kung Fu Master are sooo much easier with it.
-
For the most part I agree, I have both the 2600 and 7800 for both. I do actually like 2600 Double Dragon quite a bit (I know I'm sick). However I prefer to play it on hardware with a proline (I know I'm sick).
-
Sorry I should have worded that better. The modded 7800 is a new purchase. These carts have never worked on this new 7800. I'm still in the process of testing my entire library on the new machine. If these aren't issues that happen with UAV mod, then it just must be the 7800 itself. The main thing is that it plays all of my 7800 titles, which it does. Any problem 2600 titles can either be played on my old 7800 or Retron 77.
-
Yes they all work on my older 7800 with the expansion port. Other activision titles do work on the modded system Pitfall!, keystones kapers, kaboom, boxing and commando.
-
For longest time I considered this mod but would occasionally read random things about an occasional game that didn't work after the mod. Since I have had my 7800 since I was 10 years old, I decided to buy a second 7800 that already had the mod. Everything looks beautiful through my RetroTink. All of my 7800 games work fine as do most 2600 but I am starting to have more 2600 titles that do not work. Just a black screen on clean carts that work in my OG 7800 and my retron 77. My original 7800 is the one with expansion port, this modded one does not have it so it's a later model. What's weird all the 2600 games that don't work so far are later ones Kung Fu Master, Dark Chambers and Double Dragon. I can getDouble Dragon to boot for a bit but I can not start the game. The reset button doesn't work and then it eventually goes black. Is it the mod or the 7800 itself? To me it seems weird that these later day games would be the ones causing me issue as they came out after the 7800 was on the market.
-
I have thought about getting it modded but every time I'd say I'm going to get it modded, I'd read about an issue someone had after getting a 7800 console modded. Have you had any issues?
-
Is there any difference in quality between using a vcr or a stand alone demodulator like this ? A reviewer specifically mentions using it for a 7800. Currently if I play my 7800 on a flat screen I do a vcr to a RetroTink which looks a little muddy and fuzzy. The stand alone looks pretty expensive $90 with shipping. I have two vcrs if they are all pretty much the same I don't want to spend the cash

Video Game Display Preferences

I have been jumping around a lot between a CRT and a Flat screen using the RetroTink 2x. I also have have HD retrovision cables for my sms/genesis so sega looks fantastic on a flat screen with no lag but the CRT is still the most enjoyable. The reason I found I like it better is because when you are playing on CRT, you are closer to the screen. Something about sitting far back from a flat screen kind of removes me from the game. -
That worked thanks so much!

MAME 4 droid at least gave me errors. It said I am missing 1 or more files so I'm guessing the Rom sets I found are incomplete
