Stella 6 on the R77: the eagle is landing
Drunk_Caterpillar replied to DirtyHairy's topic in Atari 2600
I don't do software development, so forgive me if this is a dumb question, but I was wondering about what will happen when the libretro/RetroArch port of Stella 6 is released. Will each port of Stella have to be updated and released separately, or once all the ports are completed is it as simple as making changes to a unified code base and then compiling that code for every platform? -
I know it's not perfect, but with Stella 6 support on the Retron77 I'm not really all that fussed about not having an AVS style solution. Yes, I'd like to be able to use a broader selection of original carts; yes, I'd like to have more peripheral support on the built in ports. For my use case scenario though (using the handful of common carts I own and plugging in paddles through a 2600dapter) I think it'll do just fine.

FPGA Based Videogame System

I mean, we're talking about a guy who pronounced height as "heighth" through most, if not all, of his SuperNt settings video. I still really appreciate the work he does but at the end of the day no one is perfect and everyone has their biases. You do you man! -

I have hardwood floors in my place and the shocks have been BRUTAL. -

It's possible that v4.7 was only released to fix something that v4.6 introduced, but I was under the impression that 4.6 only installed on Ghostly machines--if there were SGB audio issues with v4.6 on regular devices then they were probably there in 4.5. I don't use a SGB so I think I'm gonna install the v6.6 jailbreak, but if SGB is something you're interested in I feel like v4.7 is gonna be your safest bet. Would love to find out one way or another though. -

Mine is the JPN one. I put in an email to Analogue support so hopefully something gets figured out soon. -

Question: does anyone get static electricity shocks from their MegaSg? Like, the majority of the time when youre putting in an SD card or touching the power button? I just had one that was so bad that it burnt out the blue LED inside the power button, and now I cant make it glow blue or white. :/ -
I wish, but the problems are with the firmware on the controller board. For now, the best option is to buy a USB 2600 adapter and an OTG cable.

Stella 6 on the R77: the eagle is landing

Sort of an off topic thing, but when I load the new image on to a 16GB SD card the partition is still pretty small; like, only 100MB or so. Do you folks just resize the partition once you image the card? Or is there something Im doing wrong? Im using Etcher on Mac OS. -

So far my favourite look for the video output has been: - TV Mode: Bad Adjust - TIA Interpolation [ON] - 25-30% Scanlines Has such a grungy old feel that doesn't seem too unnatural to me. I still really enjoy bypassing any sort of analogue look too, but there's something very satisfying about these three settings. -

Thats all good to hear. Wish Hyperkin had done a better job with the ports and the dumper, but at least we have workarounds for both of those now. -

Paddle support even on official R77 firmware was sketchy at best; on mine, the paddles vibrated so much that games like Breakout were totally unplayable. They work great with a 2600USB adapter though. -
Stella 6 on the R77: the eagle is landing

I did a cursory read through of the Stella user guide but I'm still not sure about two things: 1. How do I permanently save settings? Every time I restart the R77, any changes I've made to the video modes revert back to default. 2. Is there any way to go to the different option tabs/panes when I'm in their menus? I can cycle through options with the tab button but I can't figure out how to select different pages (e.g. Video Options > TV Effects). [Edit] Just read that it's Ctrl-Tab. Thanks! Lastly, is there any chance we could get bolder highlight options for the Stella Settings menu? From the couch it can be a little tricky to see which menu option is highlighted. -

Thank you for all the hard work! Can't wait to try this. -
That is TERRIFIC news.

Kind of off topic, but I looked in to it and was shocked to see that the Retron77 is running fairly similar hardware to what is in the SNES and NES Classics. Sounds like half the RAM (128MB vs 256MB) but I had no idea the SoC was as capable as it was. The benchmarks I have found put this around the speed of a Raspberry Pi 2 or twice as fast as a Raspberry Pi 0, which is honestly better than I'd thought. I'm really excited to see what running Stella 6+ on this feels like.

Thank you all for the tremendous work you've put in to this. I cannot wait to give newer versions of Stella a shot.

I just use the card that came with my R77 and it worked fine.
-
I'm having a similar issue, and would also love to get Super Breakout working. I think it's a problem with the controller boards in the console tbh. Might need some new drivers, but we'll see! I'm contacting Hyperkin about it and you should too. [email protected]

Can confirm; my OS 10.14 and 10.12 machines have zero problems with the latest R77 disc images.
-
I thought that was just the earlier revision of the system, and they've fixed that with the latest release hardware. Maybe not though? Mine seems fine. Also, thanks so much for the continued support Remo! Can't wait to install this update.

Just sent over a quick donation. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

I definitely plan to! [Edit] Just did. Thanks for all the hard work you and your team do.

I just picked up an R77 and I'm pretty excited to try some classics. I know it's not a perfect Atari 2600 experience by any means, but I love the hardware design and it seems like something I could still have fun with. Does anyone know if there's any further community development projects happening and if there'd be any way to contribute to them? I'm sure everyone is all about FPGA/MiSTer development these days, but it would be rad to see this thing running Stella 5+.

Just wanted to say thanks for the amazing update. Is there a place I can donate to the project?
