I wanted to ask you if 7800Basic's alphachars can support non-standard letters such as æ, ð, and þ? (Ditto for accented vowels and consonants.) By the way, you're free to use my shooter demo as a project template if you so desire.

    Hey SlidellMan,

    According to RT's 7800basic guide:

    Quote

7800basic doesn't “know” the letters A, B, C. Instead, your alphachars statement tells 7800basic that any alphadata commands that follow should represent the space, A, B, C, and D, as the 0th, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd characters in the image file.

    https://www.randomterrain.com/7800basic.html#alphachars_and_alphadata

So it may be possible to utilise them but one potential issue is that the compiler may not like them? (worth a try I guess!).  Saying that there is nothing stopping you from representing these characters in your on-screen font using standard ASCII characters.

I was going to send you this new example as it represents your situation in your game giving you the ability to use a larger font on the title and the smaller font in-game for the score.  Just remember you cannot mix these on-screen at the same time.

    Awesome work in progress!

Any chance the default first controller can be Joystick? With my DS Emulator, as soon as you select off paddles into (??) driving controller, it won't allow me to make any more changes. The emulator doesn't support the analog inputs (yet) so having Joystick first would allow me to start it up. The previous WiP had no such selection issues.

I realize this is an Emulator issue.

I will take a look at doing a build with that configuration when I sort out the concerto pokey issue.

Found another issue with corrupted loading - the most recent (week old) ARKANOID WIP version loads, and the intro screens and menu display properly, but the game playfield is corrupted, the game does not actually start or play, and there's no sound at all. I just verified via A7800 that there should be an AtariAge jingle plus sound in the intro screens.

Confirming that I'm seeing the same behaviour.

Thanks guys! I suspect that the issue relates to the pokey initialisation much the same as what happened with Popeye (as both are based on 7800basic).  I'll need to investigate how Darryl fixed Popeye to see what I can do for a specific Concerto build.  My Concerto currently doesn't get past loading much at all on either of my PAL 7800s currently but will see if I can test it here first.

I should crack both of mine open and list some things as Robert is doing.

So I downloaded the latest WIP version and tried to play on real hardware via my new Concerto Cart. Although the game loads and the intro screens and menu work, once I select the controller option and try to start a game, I get corrupted graphics along the bottom of the screen but that's it. I also have no sound at all, despite having a POKEY in my Concerto. Is there a Concerto-specific build available, or is this just an incompatibility with my console?

Thanks for trying it out @DrVenkman I suspect that the issue relates to the pokey initialisation much the same as what happened with Popeye (as both are based on 7800basic).  I'll need to investigate how Darryl fixed Popeye to see what I can do for a specific Concerto build.  My Concerto currently doesn't get past loading much at all on either of my PAL 7800s currently but will see if I can test it here first.

Totally understood.  If it's not doable in the space available, I think we'll all live 😜  The game is really great as-is, so the suggestion is really just extra frosting.

    Cool, thanks!

@x=usr(1536) I had a bit of a look before Christmas but we just can't fit anything else in! Thanks again for your suggestions!

And while i was at it, with the moment of free time i had today, playing a bunch of new 7800 dev builds i gave the latest Millie and Molly demo a run. I haven't a 7800 so closest experience i can get to the physical copy. Very very nice and fun puzzle game! Really enjoyed this and got to around level 20 or so (wasn't keeping track). Just kicked my feet up and had alot of fun working out the puzzles. Nice relaxing no rush type of game i could just casually play through. The difficulty progression of the puzzles works really well. Not too hard but requires some planning ahead and smart thinking to solve. Such a great game 👍

@TwentySixHundred Thanks Tony! Hopefully we can make a digital version available one day so you can play the other 80 levels! There are some crackers in there!

A few quick other tests keeping the 32GB Class 10 in play under the AT84 serial:

    2600 Bowling:

Appears to loads fully to cart, thereafter, screen shows white and black rolling lines.

    7800 Choplifter:

    Freezes at 80% loading.

    7800 Midnight Mutants:

    Freezes at 90% loading.

Results sounding similar to mine Robert - menu is working perfectly for me also. Fred has mentioned he has a few things he is going to test on the loading side going forward 👍

  7. Hey everyone!

Well another year has passed and Arkanoid is still WIP 😒 I desperately want to finish it but the ball movement still needs further work and it just does my head in at times that I cannot get it a little better.  As noted previously the enemies have been started and some basic movement has been added but is yet to be fully flushed out otherwise the game is pretty complete.

Anyway I thought I really should release a new version considering I've been sitting on this for quite a while.  So a reminder this was a full restart from the previous version and contains a whole new gfx engine using the learning from Millie and Molly.  It also now has an amazing number of controllers available such as Paddles, Driving Wheel, Trakball, Joystick and Amiga or ST mouse (thanks Mike!!).  Please note that this may not play well on PAL machines as the ball speeds still need some adjustments.  Also note the lives indicator is not yet working.

See the first post for the download.

Apart from that I've really enjoyed helping around the forums with various projects, been playing with some little projects myself 🤫 but the best thing is seeing the amazing movement around the 7800! We have a great product in 7800basic to develop our games plus we now have Concerto and DragonFly carts available to the masses. 2020 brought us the human malware of covid but it also gave us an ever expanding community around this great machine.  Looking forward to seeing what 2021 brings. Happy new year to you all!

  8. @mimo Have you tried installing the drivers (in the following post) so the Concerto is recognised?  Some have said the drivers are automatically setup by Windows but I had to install them manually (latest Windows 10). There is some additional discussion above this post based on what I was seeing in the Device Manager.  As Mike also suggested above try some different USB ports as mine was only found on 1 of the 2 I tried.

Sorry for the dumb question, but the past few firmwares have had the hbios *.bin and then the *.cbi, but 0.95 only has the *.bin, so what do I do with the 0.93 cbi, do I keep it in the root or do i delete it?

Hi! The .cbi updates are applied directly via the inbuilt cart updater so your 0.93 cbi can be removed unless you wish to keep it for prosperity or for returning to that version at a later date.
