I didn;t have a problem with 50 cent machines. Games like Dragon's Lair had to be that way, because they were so freaking expensive. IIRC the environment MACH 3 in my home arcade cost $5000, and that machine did not recoup that money quickly either.
In my area, arcades were doing well enough though the glory days were long behind them. Arcades didn't start closing until 1988 or so, but it was a slow death. The way I think people around me saw it, the NES gave an experience very close to the arcade, and the Genesis upped the ante, and the SNES upped it even further, and the prices kept coming down in subsequent years. I think the PS1 really was the one, because that was where you saw actual ports of the classic games come in that played close to the arcade experience if not exactly like it.
When I moved to Florida in 1993, from an arcade standpoint, it was like traveling back in time to about 1982 or so, because every mall had an arcade and people were going to them, especially in Orlando. The scene did start dying off in 1995 or 1996, however.

The NES dealt a crippling blow to arcades, whom were already on a nasty decline from the crash of 1983. By 1987 or so, there was a marked downturn for arcades. Where I lived, I had no less than seven or eight arcades and game rooms within a 30 minutes drive of me. I was hanging out at them all, I told the stories and experiences on my podcast. at the time of the crash, arcades were still doing good business, but it was slowly go on a downward trend that just kept getting steeper almost by the month. By 1989, all but three of the arcades and game rooms I grew up with were gone. By this time, the console wars had heated up tremendously, and people's attention were drawn to them, away from arcades. Add to that that most manufacturers were making games that were more designed to get quarters from you than providing great gameplay, and yeah, the writing was on the wall.

Super Missile Attack is ridiculously hard. I played once in an arcade in downtown Washington DC, and I did not get very far. I was good for 50,000 at least on the original game. And yes, Liberator is hard, too.
Missile Command is one of those games that keeps getting faster as it goes, and it can overwhelm you if you don;t have a strategy in place. One missed smart missile can wreck your game in the x6 stages. The color schemes of those levels does not help much either. Good barrier placement is key to really rocking the game out.
