  1. no, it's just targeted at your code - you know how it goes you'll either behave, or it won't run
  2. i'm positive, that all your software, that doesn't follow official hardware specification will end its doings in guru meditation screen
  3. 80 column option is useless without software supporting it we do have drivers for XEP and VBXE, and you really should focus on one of these devices
  4. there are some chemicals for tinning DIY boards, and i'm pretty sure i saw some solutions for re-aplying gold plating to damaged pads on youtube if all else fails, remaking pcb connector by some to-depth milling and glueing some top and bottom side contacs on thin board made up to today's standards is also an option - all depends on how determined you are and if this is too much, i'm pretty sure i saw 800xl motherboard recreation somewhere here
  5. gold? gold is on another end of the rainbow almost all connectors I saw was tin plated I don't think any of 800xl (xl, xlf, secam rose) I have has gold plating the only one is 600xl i got from Bob Woolley (Thanks!) and gold doestnt mix that good with tin - they are incompatible chemically, and will form oxidation layer in between regardless of this, i still belive gold will be a better option to go for when it comes to edge connector and, if it has any gold, it will be so called hard gold, as they used to do that exclusively for edge connectors novadays it's a problem to find someone willing to do hard gold plating
  6. there is handfull of software that relies on transmission conducted by SIO port - most of this software could be just corrected by the author, or left for other devices to cope with, remaining one - weill i know one - it's a demo that uses 2 channels of pokey to play a music while its loading data from disk drive for PBI device this is non issue, loading speeds are 1.7mbytes/s for any sd to memory transfers implementing UART that would handle SIO calls, and CPU that would take care of logic nessesary there is beyond hardware capabilities of chip used here - it's simple CPLD device, not FPGA, although quite modern one SIO cable is expensive to make, as this is manual labour, and my point is to have this as much automated in assembly process as possible, because this increases production throughput and availibity I don't know how many AVG carts are up there - i suspect a lot, since its quite a while since it was released, still, you can't compare product that is going to be mass-produced with one that is done in small batches when TMP has the time for it this is the same reason i don't do that myself anymore - it was painfully slow, and was infecting my health as i said before - syscheck's features and freezer ones are already covered by this design - as for ethernet - i can't do everything myself, and since this is a pass-through device, there is no reason that anyone else couldn't make that part esp32 is good way out, just add a parallel interface so it wouldn't be painfully slow, and you're done software wise it doesn't matter if fujinet was written up to the SIO specs, and is not relaying on psyhical interfaces
  7. as far reliability goes - it sits flash with the case, doesn't stick above top lid, and can't be easly disconnected i suppose when you move the thing as you do with cartridges it will show some wear and tear at some point, but i doubt this will be real issue my main concern is USB connector for powering it for those of you who can't or won't solder that single wire leverage there is quite big, and we all know how it ends with cell phones - but - that's what we pay for convinience
  8. could we have one thread without covid in it? please?
  9. I don't do this anymore - assembling my own boards and shipping them out i did buy whole smt assembly line, and i would love one day be able to live from my hobby, but this didn't happend yet instead, all my projects are distributed by Lotharek's shop, and he is resposible for logistics and assembly I know for sure that UK is covered already by some distributors working closely with Lotharek, so all of UK folks, despite brexit and all should be good
  10. there is a pass through connector on the back just curious - why would you want to use ide+ with this? migration from old hard drive can be done a lot faster using pc than this and if you just want to have spinning platter drive thats fine too - i'm just curious what is the motivation there
  11. turbo freezer functionality was already there in original u1mb - noone did any software for it though, so i don't know i'm not up to a task of writing any disassembler or such as for XE, its a matter of passive adapter board, and will get there with next board revision as for sio cable - i don't think it's really needed - i know there are some software titles that won't load from anything else that SIO, but for those we do have other soultions plus, it is easy if you're doing everything with soft-core cpu like AVG cart does, but things get little more complicating when using "real" that means logic based hardware it is noting wrong with soft-core cpu approach though, just not my can of worms
  12. thank you all for your kind words I really apreciate things like this, especially with the times we have Sebastain
  13. Little WIP for those of you who don't wan't to solder, or have too many computers to expand them all this is just the beggining of software side of this project, so please be patient
  14. Mark, i've already asked Electron about that many times and you know what was the answer it's not me to decide, sorry i only did vbxe2 core manager code, and hdl for vbxe is Electron's IP
  15. i'm sure foft doesn't need this explained, but some of you might need that for HDMI there are no separate audio pins - digital or analog, instead, audio data is embeded into tmds stream during horizontal and vertical synchronisation periods, and depeding on the logic inside tv it might be processed out of sync with video - thus most tv sets have some options to set audio to video delay/latency if you can provide standard i2s output vbxe3 will use it i'm using 50mil 4 pin header on simplestereo4 for this purpose
  16. all in all it worked, and i knew from the beggining what i was up to i never treated this like commercial project or something in that mindset - i knew it was your choice to make it that way, because i remember posting my comments on part choices when you started this just SIP/DIP resistor packs were overwhelming and very hard to come by if you could, please check parts availability in Farnell or TME too, as this the only other place for many european users (custom's and shipment cost from DigiKey make purhases like this uneconomical or even impossible) it would greatly popularise your designs then
  17. all you need for this kind of repair, is a hot-air and a bit of practice - perhaps on some scrap pc motherboards or network adapters i'm sure there is plenty of videos over youtube showing how this is done if you would rather not - i'm sure there are some skilled people in the states who could help you out
  18. first of, you should compare pinouts for slot 0 and 1 if there is any constant voltage present on one of pins that is not there for slot 0 chances are you partially damaged CPLD chip chances that NVRAM got bad are almost none another thing might be wrongly inserted battery - many people failed to do it the right way, and it was shipped separatly
  19. i was assembling one to have something i could put in the office without drawing too much attention to it it took me a while to complete it - for some parts i had to wait two months before they arrived (RAM chip), for others i would still wait if not for good people around here who helped me out (video minidin/rca combination) - even audio jack was not a standard part for me i quit trying to get every SIP resistor pack so it would look pretty - just went ahead with what i could buy and used that, remaining ones were replaced either by SMD couterpars (100k under POKEY) or with standard THT parts mounted vertically and then soldered with a bar wire capacitors - i had to ask around, since most of this stuff is phased out and commonly replaced by smt parts crystal choice was also odd for me - it could include that by 4 divider in the first place, since 14.318 or 14.187 crystals are obtainable easy enough, but no - XL part was used i still doesn't have any sio2pc solution there, or stock video option - uav is no go for me, and sio2pc module is also not possible to buy locally after all this - it didn't work - it appears i was picky about 74ls08 part i was using - fortunatly MOQ was 5, and it had no problem working with another one from that purchase bottom line - it's hard to get assembled on this side of the pond
  20. Do you have a source for that rule or is it just a personal preference? We could shorten the BOM a great deal by only using 1K resistors and 0.1uf caps. this is industry standard - keep the BOM short, no exceptions here all the people in a production chain will than you for designing with that rule in mind 1088xel is a personal project though - take it or leave it i guess
  21. zero page fault is most disturbing if you revert your installation to a stock configuration you end up with perfectly working 800? if so, return your incognito board to the seller swapping PIA won't help, swapping roms won't help either BIOS doesn't use anything on zero page, so it should be fine, but then again single byte faults like this are a bit suspicious, and suggest some trouble in lower bits of address bus - ie open (unsoldered) pins on one of memories please check U10 as this is your base memory - any dry joints could do that i do not advise repairing this by yourself - if your 800 is operational when you restore it to stock configuration (games works, not the memo pad) then use your warranty instead
  22. just a side note (uhm, no pun intended) if you need to go into recovery mode with side3 - press side3 button and keep it like this while powering atari up side3 won't appear as a cartridge, but you'll be able to boot from sio and preform update
