  1. I did get it, thanks! Wonderful book, great artwork, and a lot of rare thing inside. I have a few other Atari books as well, but this one is very well laid out. I'll have to spend some time to read through it all, but mostly flipped through the entire thing. Thanks! Looking forward to volume 2.

Good news! Really glad you like it, makes it all worthwhile ;-) I've learned a lot from Volume One, had some great feedback (and constructive criticism), which I have made sure makes Volume Two even better. The first printers proof of Volume Two is due soon, and if the next 22 copies sell by June, we should be good for a late June or early July release. Thanks again for your purchase leech.

  2. Looks like I should have gotten mine today, but I wasn't home to sign for it, so will have to pick it up tomorrow.

@leech - hope it arrived safely, the tracking number will confirm if it was signed for.

    Here is an update:

    Volume 2 News:

Only 22 copies left of Volume One (First Edition), as soon as they are sold I will have covered costs enough to start the print run for Volume 2. They will come with a special limited 55mm Atari ST badge and vinyl sticker... and yes, all first editions of Volume 2 come with a one-off Atari poster. Question, should we go with an 8-Bit theme or a 16-bit them for the poster (or dare I say it, 64-Bit!)?

    Shipping Update #6

Shipping update: all orders upto #10053 have shipped as of today (with your free poster and sticker).

  4. Not a big catch in the grand scheme of things, but I added another Atari badge to my little collection. It is the square multi-coloured Atari badge in the top display (I'm easily pleased!). I have a few doubles, if anybody wants to do some swapsies!

I'm looking for any official Atari badges, would love to score any COSMOS badge, Atari Service and the "The Future Is Here" badge.

  5. VLA Volume one so ordered, looking forward.

    Thanx, Dave

    Thanks Dave,

Your order is on its way :)

    Volume 2 News:

Now over 60% of my goal to print Volume 2, so hopefully it won't be much longer. If I get at least 90% of my costs back, I'll probably go ahead anyway such has been the demand for it :-)

    Shipping Update #4

All Order #'s up to 10047 have all shipped, along with your free poster and sticker.

Thank you guys again for the support and the kind feedback.

  7. Hello!

I had a great response to Volume One so far, but equally, I know a lot of you wanted Volume Two, which is from 1984-1996, the period most relevant to a lot of us on these boards.

Well, I am glad to inform you that we are literally 32 copies away from the first print run of Volume 2, so if you want to support the next book, please spread the word.

More information and some previews available here http://www.zafinnbooks.com

Please don't hesitate to contact me through AA or the website above. And thank you for all of you who asked me to hold a copy of Volume Two for you, I will contact you as soon as its available.

Thanks again for all the support so far.

  8. Hello!

Just in case you don't know, I launched a new Atari book in March called "We Love Atari" Volume One which charts the company from 1972 all the way to 1983, just on the cusp of the sale to Jack Tramiel. I had a great response, but equally, I know a lot of you wanted Volume Two, which is from 1984-1996, the period most relevant to a lot of us on these boards.

  11. Was the beginning of the dotcom era the right time for branded stores?

Exactly, it was a very odd decision - many belived that a corporate store in prime city location (they started these in Europe in 96, so you had a "showroom" in London, Dublin, Paris, Stockholm, Amsterdamn etc etc) was enough, a bit like today's Apple Stores, but on a much smaller more cost effective way. The core business model was mail order by free-phone, when GW2K opened its online store/website (1996) it was pulling in good numbers (and kept growing) as more people began switching from phone ordering to the new online model. The Dotcom "bubble" did not effect online sales, the world economy did slump in 2000/2002 and PC sales slowed, but Gateway kept spending money on stores anyway. If Gateway had pushed the online side of its business and ploughed a fraction of the cost of the stores into its online tech, it could have been a different story.

  12. How so? You don't think it was high prices of commodity equipment in a crowded market that killed it? Computers were a race to the bottom with e-machines being pushed at razor thin margins.

Gateway decided to go crazy and opened up hundreds of stores in the US market - these things eat money. They did the same in Europe and Asia, but on a smaller scale. They abondoned their original business model. There were other factors of course, the Asian economy crashed while Gateway had spent millions expanding there, but within 24 months, Jezz Wietzen CEO (appointed by Ted Waitt while he took a back seat in '99), started pulling the foundations of the company apart until he was fired and Ted came back a couple of years later (2001) and tried to turn things around.

Gateway never made up the ground it lost under Weitzen and Ted tried in vain, but it was too late, although a valiant effort.

  13.

:-o Wow :-o . My copy just arrived and I couldn't be happier. I've only thumbed through it a bit, nothing thorough, but I'm blown away by how much is covered in this book.

    • The ads, renderings and pictures all look great!
    • The Quick Reference on the Contents page is a nice touch.

    I honestly can't wait for Volume 2

    Thank you Karl.

    Thanks Steve :-D

I'l so glad your happy with it - it took forever to put together and get the balance right, and what I have learned from the process of making Volume One has only made Volume Two even better, something you will love too.

  14. very interested in Volume 2 of this book. 800xl was my first computer, so volume 1 is not that appealing to me... anyway, good job with this book, it looks fabulous!

Thanks mchorvat, appreciate the feedback. I agree though, my own Atari "childhood" is from 1985 (with a few years before hand playing Arcade games). I'm also looking forward to getting Volume 2 out for everybody, I've had a lot of requests for it. But I have a soft spot for the 70's Atari too, especially the advertising and the early arcade games.

  15. Got my copies today!! Now to find time to read it instead of drooling over all the pictures. I want volume 2. *pout*

Great news Karl, I really hope you enjoy it. Volume 2 looks great and I am already getting a proof from the printer next month so I can ensure its ready to go to print as soon as possible.

  16. Pardon my ignorance if this was covered by past topics, but Is this one all 2600? Or what is the % makeup if it covers other platforms (arcade, 5200).

I take it computers/XL/XE+ is slated for vol 2 or did any 400/800 make it into vol 1.

Hi Nezgar, thanks for the question.

Volume One starts at Pong (72) and covers almost everything up until 1983, so the 400/800 and 1200XL computers are in there. Over 292 pages the book gives you as much visual "Atari" as possible, as well as some historical overview of each product, advertising of the time, prototypes and much more. Volume 2 begins with the 7800 (84) and then all the way to 1996 with all the other 8-Bit, 16-Bit, 32-Bit computers included (and the 64-Bit Jaguar of course!).

  17. I don't necessarily consider my system classic. I may say "classic" because "old". But certainly there is little or nothing unique. different, or rare about the hardware. And each bit of hardware, drives, cards, memory, and so on, all of it came from different manufacturers. I will also say the mobo is rather bare and basic in features, as are the BIOS options. Nothing extravagant like you'd find in Pentium II/III systems a few short years later.

I do however consider the software classic. Windows 3.1 & MS-DOS 5.0. And all the games and applications we ran on it. The software shaped the use of the system. It gave flavour and personality to +30lbs of cheap clone metal.

I think we can agree there is some (a little bit) classic-ness to an older Gateway 2000 system, cowspots and all  The steel box and fairly generic internals are nothing we will see on an episode of "My classic computer" (if such a show existed) in the next 10-20 years, but you'd be surprised how rare some of these PC systems will become, especially as they are so commonly tossed into the recycling bins or sadly part of yet another YouTube destruction video!

PC's do not have a large collector fan base like the home computers have had, but perhaps their time will come :)

I think the other part of the story here is the company itself, and its roots and quirky marketing, that was unique in the computer world and as Opry99er said earlier, it did impact on the culture, so to some degree when you compare Gateway 2000 to a Micron, Dell, Compaq, HP etc, they do have a little justification of being a classic machine if not by hardware alone.

  18. It's a beautiful looking book. I just can't justify a $75 book purchase currently :(

Thanks @orpheuswaking, appreciate the kind words.

It's actually just over $72 for the book + shipping + packaging to ROW/USA, but I'll give you your $75 ;-) The shipping is a little high, but that's because its tracked (registered) for your own piece of mind.

I can ship a multiple order and save on shipping costs if a few of you got together, just contact me and we can work on it if its something you want to look into.

Remember, a book is for life
