  1. I must be doing something wrong here.  The overscan setting doesn't do anything on my 42" Sony LCD, and my paddles don't work at all -- spinning them doesn't move anything on the screen.  I tried with a few games, and had the same results in every game.

Short of rebuilding my SD card, is there some file I should remove to reset settings?

Hi, I just loaded up my Retro 77 with the image. When I start it up, this is the screen I get. Is this normal?

Yes, that is the screen I get as well.  I created a "games" directory in the root directory of the SD chip's filesystem, then I put my ROMs in that directory.  Now when I power on my R77, it starts in the games directory.

  3. Hey, thanks, I am using your firmware.  This morning I learned that CF cards are still sold, and yes, I suspect the adapter as well, so I'm looking at purchasing a 16GB SanDisk CF card.  When I started this project, I did not have access to a CF USB adapter, but my iMac does have an SD slot, so that is why I went the CF/SD route.  Maybe that was a bad choice; either way, I'll buy a real CF card now.

Thanks for the lead on RWCRC - I'll run that and see what it reports.

  4. Hi, all.

I recently installed an Incognito board into my 800, and I'm having some issues with it, specifically error 139 in the loader, while accessing the FAT16 partition.

From the docs, I see that error 139 means "Device NAK: The device failed to respond. This error may be caused by an attempt to read a Compact Flash card which has been removed or is failing."

    Here's the storage I'm using:

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B073K14CVB/

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B019RAY92I/

I'm wondering if the issue is the SD chip or the CF adapter, or both.  Maybe I need to buy both from Lotharek directly, instead of from Amazon.  The products I bought do look identical to the pictures posted on Lotharek's site, but maybe there's some difference.  His CF adapter does say that it is "Lotharek's customized."

I am able to run FDISK to partition the SD card.  I am able to format the partitions I make.  I have not been able to access the FAT partition from SpartaDOS X yet, but that's mostly because several keys on my 800 do not work: >+XVBN

Since the "N" key does not work, I cannot "EDIT CONFIG.SYS" -- meaning I cannot add the FAT driver.  I'll get that sorted soon enough, though: I have confirmed, and the problem is only that the switches need to be resoldered.

I do have two other (and super old) CF cards, a 512MB and a 128MB.  I'm using the 128MB card successfully right now, but only with the loader, again because I haven't fixed the keyboard yet.

Anybody have experience with error 139 on the Incognito?

    Thanks.

  5. Thanks, FJC.  I saw that pressing the space bar in the loader allowed me to assign a drive letter, but I couldn't figure out how to get back to the Incognito BIOS screen to boot.  I decided to make this super easy on myself: I convinced my wife to buy me an SDrive-MAX for my birthday/Christmas, and to let me have it when it arrives. :D  Gavin tells me it will ship tomorrow, so maybe I'll be playing by this weekend!

I assume that once I figure out how to use an SDrive-MAX (fortunately there are good manuals on this), upgrading the Incognito BIOS will be easy (I've seen your videos, FJC, and it's pretty simple) and then I'll be heading for quick success.

Maybe I should contact Lotharek and ask if he can supply some sort of manual for the old BIOS... but since most people will probably just flash to FJC firmware, using an SIO device they already have, maybe it doesn't really matter that much.

I'm getting there, slowly but surely.  The SDrive-MAX was on my list, I just didn't expect to buy it today...

All steps you need to do,  you´ll find in FJC´s great manual here:

    Incognito-and-1088XEL-U1MB-Firmware-Manual  (Page 9)

    I prefered the SIO2PC method, (mount firmware.atr as D1:)

It´s very easy and works well for me...

Thanks for that link. I’ve read various docs and probably read them too quickly.

I’ll budget for and buy an SDrive-MAX and then be off to the races.

I may be wrong, but I don't think you can update that way, as your effectively flashing the system while trying to access it (I'm sure I'll be corrected if wrong).

I think it can only be flashed using as you say SDrive-MAX or one of the other SIO devices.

Yeah, I didn’t think about that (flashing while using). Makes sense.

I was hoping for a different answer, but you’re right — I guess it’s time to buy an SDrive-MAX. Thanks.

  8. Hi, all.

I bought an Incognito board, and silly me I didn't buy one with the FJC firmware -- I planned to update it myself.  Well, now I'm trying to figure out how to do that.

I can get into the loader by pressing "L" from the BIOS menu.  This gives me a directory listing of the files in the FAT32-formatted CF card, and I choose UFLASH.XEX.  This launches UFlash.  I have the ROM files on the CF card (in the FAT32 partition), but it seems that UFlash doesn't read a FAT32 filesystem, because it's not seeing any files no matter what "D#:" drive option I choose from the menu.  I have tried filtering for "*.*" and "*" but neither of those shows any files (not even the UFLASH.XEX).

I'm not sure if the old version of the loader supports this, but I have tried mounting an ATR file by selecting an ATR file (e.g., FJC's "toolkit.atr" and "Incognito_Full.atr"), but when I press RETURN with one of those selected in the loader, my system boots to the self test.

If it matters, my Incognito is configured as follows: XL/XE, boot to High-Speed OS, Joystick emulation enabled, SIDE enabled at ID 5, SpartaDOS enabled.

I do not yet have any SIO drive, so I can't use that to bootstrap this process.  Maybe it's time to buy an SDrive-MAX, but before I did that I wanted to see if there was any other way of bootstrapping this update.

UFlash will work great once I get it to see that ROM -- that's the whole trick here.  Any thoughts on what I can do to get past this?

    Thanks.

  9. Yes, I remember seeing somewhere that you were thinking of creating those ready-made images -- unfortunately they still wouldn't do me any good today since I have no way of connecting a CF card to my modern computer.  My gen1 Canon EOS doesn't appear as a disk drive, it only appears as a camera, so no luck there, and I have lost the USB CF reader that I had 10+ years ago (oh well).  I'll get the right gear, and yes, part of the fun is going to be figuring it all out, so please don't spoon-feed me everything! :)

At the same time, I really didn't know what I was getting -- and it's turning out to be so much more than just a RAM and OS upgrade.  Your "hands on" video was instructive, and your installation videos (1 and 2) were both very useful.  I skipped most of 2 since I'm not doing the ATR button swap, for now anyway.  Your many comments that "if you screw this up, you will destroy your Incognito board" have dissuaded me from that for now.

For me, the biggest difficulty as a new user has been to grasp all the concepts: What does this thing do, and why should I care?  Watching one of your videos, I learned that - wow - it's a hard drive emulator too?!  "What is a hard drive on an 8-bit Atari computer?  I have never never heard of that..." Hmm...

To be clear, I grew up on PC-DOS (Dad worked at IBM and wouldn't hear of my interest in 8-bit Atari, 16-bit Atari, Amiga, and Macintosh).  I got my first hard drive for the IBM PS/2 Model 25 that I took to university in the late 1980s.  I'm not new to 8-bit systems or hard drives, I'm new to Atari 8-bit computing (to date I have treated mine 8-bit Ataris like game consoles), and I'm new to the whole concept of the Incognito (U1MB, SIDE, etc), and the concept of a hard disk on an Atari is just new to me.

Things I'll figure out: What is an ATR file and what do I do with it?  How do I work with ATR files on my Incognito-powered 800?  How do APT and ATR relate?  What does the SIDE loader do?  Other than that "people told me to" (and "it's fun"), why did I buy this thing and spend all this time on my 800? :)

    I think my process is:

    - get a FAT drive (micro SD + CF adapter, or CF card) loaded with the UFLASH.XEX and correct firmware file

    - run the existing loader and use that to load UFLASH.XEX so that I can flash to your firmware

    - boot SpartaDOS X in new firmware

    - run FDISK against my CF card to create an APT and then create one or more Atari partitions, and a FAT partition

    - load up demos and play around

PS - if you point me to the documentation, I'll read it.  I recently bought 2 cars, and in one night I read the manual on one of them (yes, I do that), and I'm still working through the (much larger manual) for the other one. :D

  10. Thanks, yes, I caught it going through this viewing that the first thing you did was flash the ROM with something you already had, and that you ran FDISK after that update.  I'm going to go through that toolkit page and see what I can sort out.

At the moment I need one of two things: a CF reader for my modern computer, or a micro SD chip and a micro SD-to-CF adapter. I'll get on that.

Since the loader supports FAT partitions, I should be able to get this going pretty quickly.

And, everything you say makes sense, and I should have smooth sailing once I have access to the FDISK command.

Thanks so much for these nudges in the right direction.  I expect I'll hit more bumps along this path -- as long as they aren't boulders, and I can overcome them, that's part of the enjoyment.  With the new knowledge I have gained today, I expect I'll be able to figure out most of it from here on out.

  11. Yeah, I must be doing something really dumb, but I don't see it.

My non-FJC Incognito is configured as: XL/XE, 1088k RAMBO, Stock OS (also tried High-Speed OS), SpartaDOS X Enabled, SIDE hardare Enabled, SIDE PBI ID 1, Joysticks enabled.

When I run "FDISK" I get the error that the disk does not respond.  Based on that 6th edition doc and your video, it seems pretty clear that "FDISK" should be available.... any ideas why it's not?

    Thanks.

  12. Thanks.  I didn't see that particular doc, no, so I'll check that out.  And, yes, I'm rewatching that video now because I remember that you went through it there.  It looks like early on you ran the "FDISK" command, which doesn't appear to exist on my system.

I'll check out that doc and will watch the video even more carefully to see if I missed something else earlier on.

I also don't know whether my CF card is problematic in the Incognito.

  13. Maybe I'm just missing it, and maybe it only existed in an earlier version of the docs, but I don't see a card preparation guide in the Incognito manual.

I'm a total beginner here - I have never used any sort of DOS on any Atari, ever.  I've never used any sort of mass storage on any Atari, ever.

While searching my storage room, I found 2 CF cards, and they still work, so I stuck them (one at a time) into my Incognito.  One is a Lexar 256MB 4x card, and the other is a SanDisk Ultra 128MB card.  When I boot to SpartaDOS in XL/XE mode, I run "format" and try to format disk 1 but it says the "Drive does not respond!" When I try to run any other command at the "D1:" prompt, I simply get "138 Device does not respond" -- I assume this is because the disk is not formatted.  When I run "FDISK" I simply get "138 Device does not respond" ...

I know I'm missing something fundamental here, but I've tried searches and haven't yet found the magic sauce to format a CF card as a hard drive.

Maybe I should have paid for the board flashed with FJC's firmware, but I figured I could do it... now I'm starting to wonder...

    Any tips for a newbie?

Right paddles buttons were not functioning in Basic settings. 2 sets of paddles had same results. Player 2 and 4 could not start the ball in Breakaway or hold the ball in Warlords.

Binding the buttons worked in Advanced settings, but activating that caused a small cascade of other issues. Had to re-bind all aspects of each paddle control after the first power down.

Could you point me to instructions on doing this for Stella on the R77?  I've tried to understand the user's guide on mapping controllers in Stella and I'm not there yet. I've tried googling and searching the forums and I haven't found them yet.  And, unfortunately I hosed my paddle configs trying it out, and removing the settings.sqlite3 file didn't restore the paddles... they're back to major jitter ... so I done something I shouldn't have. :(

Also, very awesome on the Indy 500!

  15. I second the thanks to everyone who worked on this.  I'm really enjoying this latest community build.

I have noticed an issue with the latest community build, and wonder if anyone else has seen this.  My second paddle button doesn't work in this build.  Anybody else seeing that issue?  I used a multimeter to confirm that the button itself is working through the cable, and it works on my 2600.

The hyper-paddle fix really is awesome, and this build is near perfect.  Thanks!!

  16. I am not aware of any varying revisions of the R77. Maybe try another SD card.

i bought a new micro SD tonight, and it works fine. Unfortunately my TV (a Sony Bravia LCD from ~2010) seems to be stuck in overscan mode with the R77, and I have yet to find a way out of it. Interestingly, my raspberry pi displays perfectly (no overscan) on the same HDMI input.

I thought I had previously found a way to disable overscan, but I couldn't find it tonight. Maybe it is settable on non-HDMI inputs only.

Thanks, yeah, I'll go buy another one tonight. I downloaded the R77 image directly from Hyperkin and flashed it to the 1GB chip I was using, and it didn't work either. I know the chip is good (I've used it for other things) but for some reason it doesn't work here.
