RMT2LZSS: convert RMT tunes to LZSS for fast playback!
rensoup replied to rensoup's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
I'm curious to hear if you ever do a 50hz version, your take on whether it was worth using 100hz or not -

🤩 Mindblowing!! Shame you can't like & thank a post at the same time 😃 Interesting that the 50hz version is missing so much stuff and that it is so much smaller... The other tunes I tried reducing weren't nearly as drastically altered. Possibly because they weren't exploiting its potential ? I hope you're going to complete this one🤞 ...Then I have list of a couple of hundred more tunes for you 😆 -
While it does help for PoP, that intro pic is a curse!

RMT2LZSS: convert RMT tunes to LZSS for fast playback!

See... that's what happens because there's no properly defined subtune start 😏 I just assumed that the next subtune would start right after the last played line but other players made the assumption that it should start from the first unplayed line... Don't know if there's a right or wrong: If a musician made 2 tunes and decided that the 1st one went from 0-39 but skipped line 5. If the 2nd one starts at 40 but jumps back to 5... would that trip the other players and make them start the 2nd tune from 5? In the end, the musician decides where the song start and the RMT init code has to be fed the right start line yeah I believe that too 😎 I think Emkay had a tune that didn't have a goto and that crashed the converter, I'm not sure if it was the only tune out of a thousand that did that! -

1.4 release is out (get it from the first post) new switch to output all subtunes! Hopefully works for all tunes... There's no proper indicator for the number of subtunes inside RMT so you have to look for goto commands and make sure the track are actually valid. -

Awesome 😃(I still enjoy your Actraiser arrangement btw!) Well I cannot hear the difference 😶 I used my speaker since the headphones seem to be crap... Like I mentioned earlier, dmsc's tweak does 3 different things, so it could be that only one is relevant to the issue but if the tweak is as good or better in every case (and improves compression ratio slightly as well) then case closed? -

not sure what you mean, there's Pokey emulation on the TIA 😱 ? -

I'm curious about the verdict! I've got subtunes output on the way but for that you'll owe me big time... (How about Battle Squadron @ 100hz 😀) -

Ooops 🙂 I only tried your win32 version because the JS one was too slow on my machine btw 😶 -

Yep, thanks! version 1.3 is out! I Also added Stereo support on the converter side (outputs 2 mono streams), the player doesn't support it... I tried alternating the 2 mono streams and play them at twice the frequency and it sounded horrible 😀 -

I tried it in your Bupsystem and got a black screen btw -

nice 😀 So TIA is the default soundchip on the 7800... ouch! -

400hz/800hz should be possible (in terms of CPU usage) with a new tracker but the memory usage will go up... it would probably require per channel frequency selection... new tracker required! -

I noticed that my frequency reduction didn't work for all settings, new update available from the first post! -

I suppose the subwoofer is required to hear the difference though ? -

yeah I tried doing a wav test too, I plugged in my portable bluetooth speaker (megaboom or something) and I heard the difference, I wouldn't say it sounded great but that was just a test drum obviously... Still it's annoying that it can't only be heard with typical headphones or on TV speakers. -

well that's a relief 😃 Portable bluetooth speakers aren't any good I guess ? -

yeah I should make that a little more robust! -

You're using Wine and complaining about speed 😃 ?? The slow part is the compressor and the only thing that's changed is the check for that AUDC tweak flag but it wouldn't make it that much slower. Seems to have worked fine for others though... Did you unpack the new version of the A8 player as well ? Did you move folders? perhaps they've got special chars ? Can you send the verbose output of a single conversion? doubt it's going to say much but you never know... I output a batch of 1000 tunes every time I make significant changes, so that's not the problem... -

can't hear it 😮 Well I'm hoping it's the headphones! -

that should work in theory... got an example ? You know you can change the text right ? -

rensoup replied to rensoup's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
it's more about navigation: with a text editor you'd have to format the text yourself which would probably be painful, unless there are text editors which are column based... not exactly an expert in that area. yes that's how I understand it but even for drums I can't really tell the difference using headphones (not fancy ones though)... Have you got an example where you can clearly hear it ? There were a few 100hz tunes which I thought had very clear sound and when I tried reducing them, the sound felt the same, so it seemed to be more about good instrument design -

One interesting feature about this release is the "replay frequency reduction" which simply discards pokey updates for tunes above 50hz... I find it very hard to hear a difference between a 200hz tune and its reduced 50hz version for every tune I tried. Makes me wonder if there's a problem with RMT or if it's just not worth it ? -

Agreed, I wondered if a spreadsheet could do the job at some point 😮
