For me, from back in the day, I'd go with Star Raiders and Space Dungeon.  I liked most of the 5200 games but Star Raiders rocked, a cool space battle simulator that was easier to deal with than the 8-bit computer version (I owned an Atari 800, my friend owned the 5200) and the analog controller felt more natural, like a fighter's stick.  Space Dungeon was a favorite because my friend and I would take turns, one controller each, one of us would pilot and the other would shoot.  Very cool, like we were flying some sort of space Apache chopper.  We could play that for hours.  I'd add a vote for Wizard Of Wor, too, that was another cooperative game that we could play for a long time.

More recently I'd say Tempest, because it's Tempest and it uses the trak-ball controller and it's maybe my favorite arcade game of all time (looks and plays and sounds the same), and Castle Crisis because it's a fantastic version of Warlords and I have a couple converted 5200 paddle controllers to make that game playable.

Most of the arcade ports are great because they are cheap ways to travel back in time and relive that era.  I wasn't that on board with the 5200 Galaxian, the timing was wrong (especially the shots) but it was still fun.  I loved Missile Command and Centipede with the trak-ball, Defender and Qix were a lot of fun, even Super Breakout (with the paddles) and Space Invaders.  I only wish the system hung around longer so that more games could get ported.

So, how many games from the atari400 or 800 (I’m not familiar with these and their hardware/set-up, could be professionally (as to quality), be ported through binaries(?) or reprogramming onto 5200 carts?

    In your view?

No. Basically most of the 2018 product line and all of the 2019 product line that are not handhelds can use both the arcade controls and display. The full list of compatible models will be released soon.

When will this thing be released?

and played the 5200 much more..i know i'm in the minority but i actually liked the 5200 controllers back then lol

I browsed through all officially released colecovision games on YouTube.

Seems to be some overlap of titles.

But I could not see any driving games looking as good as Pole Position (which has a ‘paralaxing’ speedway as you move from right to left), and no Resque on Fractalus (which is massively impressive for a 82-84 system).

Star Wars seemed better on music (and gameplay on tiefighter section), but less colourful than the 5200 version.

Frogger 2 seemed to have better grfx on 5200.

Saw no actual Pac-Man games there (did I browse to fast?)

    Hey Giles!

IMO, 7800 Ms. Pac-Man is the best version on any Atari hardware. Same goes for Centipede as it has some pretty cool multiplayer modes and nice visuals, though I've never played 5200 Centipede with the Trak-Ball controller (only the joystick).

Ok, thanks for the verification about Ms Pac Man.

It looks splendid even today as this nails the Pac Man-look as to be just a few pixels away from the arcade classic.

I have thread about which 5200 games means most to you, under the 5200-forum.

You could put in some thoughts about centipede and other 5200 games there too, if you feel like.

I don’t have the trackball at all.

    I have two refurbished org.controllers and one modded-for-atari-5200 neo-geo-stick.

Centipede for the 5200 is good for this time (82-84).

I see Centipede is a classic, but not one I played on a coin-op as a kid.

    Nice to have it though.

Haven’t gotten to play 2P on it yet.

Persuaded my bro to join me 2P on Double Dragon and Rampage.

On Rampage we got through all 132 cities. Hilarious comments, story, concept. Very crisp gameplay.

Centipede, Ms. Pac-Man, and Galaga. The reason why is because those are my favorite arcade games of all time. I've played the arcade cabinets quite a bit as a child so there's nostalgia with those games in general. Out of the three, Centipede is my number one 😁.

And Centipede and Ms Pac Man are among the best 8-bit ports aren’t they?

I love this game. The idea of this game. I suck at this game. So what do you all think of Impossible Mission and what is YOUR favorite game that you suck severely at? This and Super Circus Atari at the games I like most that I don't ever want people to see me play because I am trash at them. :)

    I don’t know.

I’m awaiting my PAL ‘Impossible Mission’ in the mail.

I was absolutely dreadful at it in dem ol’ days as a kid...

Interested in how they ported it though...

The stick on the original controller works well with Pole Position, Star Wars Arcade, Buck Rogers, Resque on Fractalus etc.

I think the firebuttons should have been hard plastic, not this softy stuff though.

On quick-flick arcade games, its unfortunately sub-optimal...

Its almost more of a ‘flight-stick’ of sorts...

    Curveball: Cloak & Dagger

I know it was never released or even started on the 5200 (it was being developed on the 8-bit and would be converted to the 5200), but it's the game that made me aware that the 5200 was even a thing (I never saw one before).  Although I'll always see the 5200 as a 'consolized Atari 400', it has it's own unique charm which is why I have it hooked up next to my 2600.  Being a prototype nut, I love how there are so many unreleased games for the 5200 and how they're all very playable.

Is there a practical difference to something being officially released vs homebrew?

I heard Atari officially recognized Adventure II.

    Am I right here?

    But what is the difference?

The 5200 was never released in Europe.

We saw the 2600 and the 7800 is obviously very common, as ebay is floating with 7800-PAL things, but 5200 is import over here.

  9. My own list would be something like this:

    1. Pole Position

    2. Pengo

    3. Star Wars Arcade

    4. Mr Do’s Castle (w/arcade stick)

    5. Mario Bros

    6. Buck Rogers

    7. Moon Patrol

    8. Pitfall 2

    9. Montezumas Revenge

    10. H.E.R.O

    11. Resque on Fractalus (technically most impressive 5200 game)

    12. Gyruss (w/arcade stick)

    13. Gremlins

    14. Frogger 2

    15. Wizard of Wor

    16. Missile Command

    17. Frogger

    18. Keystone Kapers

    19. Ms. Pac Man

    20. Pac Man

    21. Vanguard

    22. Star Raiders (may become a favourite when I get more into it).

    23. Robotron 2084

    24. Dreadnaught Factor

    25. Defender

  10. And its simple: use standard kick like you would use standard punch in the Arcade.

Of course the build-up combo won’t happen, but... you’ll be much more likely to rapidly give the bad-guys 5-6 fast kicks so you down ‘em.

And... thats what the combo-thing in the Arcade achieves.

So... using normal kick like I’d use normal-punch in the Arcade I easily got much farther...

Actually, I feel it plays more like a slower version of the Arcade now...

    Just saying.

I’m perfectly aware I may be 30-something years behind others as to this game-tip.

It may work, but you shouldn't. The transformer may be running at 10-20% over the voltage it was designed for, and consequently will output that much more power over 10v. Best case, it gets a little warmer and nothing bad happens. Worst case, it fries it- maybe not immediately but later.

As mentioned, it's best to get a 10v (9v probably is fine) center negative AC adapter made for your country and use that.

Ok, thanks, I’ll try find that.

    Thanks!

Do not use a US NES power supply with the Famicom it will blow it. The Famicom uses DC while the NES is AC. just use a good 9V DC center negative power supply using your region's mains voltage or a 110V with the same specs with the step down converter.

    A powersupply was included.

The electricity where I live in Europe is 220/240V out of the socket.

I use a converter made to enable use of American electrical equipment.

Can I plug a J.Famicom-power-cable into this, or do I need something more?

Pitfall II, easily. When I finally beat it and discovered there was a whole new game, my tiny brain was blown away. I don't know how much time I sunk into that game, but it must have been a ton.

I anyway agree Pitfall 2 is very good game, with lots of atmosphere, and this chunky, colourful look and upbeat (Indiana Jones-like) background music.

What do you think about HERO?

He lists that Tomcat is $8. However, I believe in the case of Tomcat carts, the labels are mixed up on both 2600 and 7800 versions of the game. So you could end up with a 7800 version that says it is for both the 7800 and 2600 in 2600 mode, and get a 2600 version with the 7800 only labeling. I know I've seen the 7800 version with the 2600 labeling on it in the past. Have MC take a pic of the cart edge PCB to be sure.

    Ok, thanks.

It is the 7800 version I’m after.

Well, mainly because there s one particular audio set that I like . You know how it changes tunes every reset? I don t dig harsh noises, and there s one on there that s pretty relaxing.

    Ok, so sound.

Guess I haven’t taken so much notice of that.

Super-Breakout is a sort of gametype I’m not very good at all, so I haven’t played it much, since I often gets frustrated.

That, of course, doesn’t mean its a bad game; its probably very good.

    Just never mastered this genre.
