Which Atari 5200 games means the most to you, and why (these)?
Giles N replied to Giles N's topic in Atari 5200
The stick on the original controller works well with Pole Position, Star Wars Arcade, Buck Rogers, Resque on Fractalus etc. I think the firebuttons should have been hard plastic, not this softy stuff though. On quick-flick arcade games, its unfortunately sub-optimal... Its almost more of a ‘flight-stick’ of sorts... -

Is there a practical difference to something being officially released vs homebrew? I heard Atari officially recognized Adventure II. Am I right here? But what is the difference? — The 5200 was never released in Europe. We saw the 2600 and the 7800 is obviously very common, as ebay is floating with 7800-PAL things, but 5200 is import over here. -

My own list would be something like this: 1. Pole Position 2. Pengo 3. Star Wars Arcade 4. Mr Do’s Castle (w/arcade stick) 5. Mario Bros 6. Buck Rogers 7. Moon Patrol 8. Pitfall 2 9. Montezumas Revenge 10. H.E.R.O 11. Resque on Fractalus (technically most impressive 5200 game) 12. Gyruss (w/arcade stick) 13. Gremlins 14. Frogger 2 15. Wizard of Wor 16. Missile Command 17. Frogger 18. Keystone Kapers 19. Ms. Pac Man 20. Pac Man 21. Vanguard 22. Star Raiders (may become a favourite when I get more into it). 23. Robotron 2084 24. Dreadnaught Factor 25. Defender -
And its simple: use standard kick like you would use standard punch in the Arcade. Of course the build-up combo won’t happen, but... you’ll be much more likely to rapidly give the bad-guys 5-6 fast kicks so you down ‘em. And... thats what the combo-thing in the Arcade achieves. So... using normal kick like I’d use normal-punch in the Arcade I easily got much farther... Actually, I feel it plays more like a slower version of the Arcade now... Just saying. — I’m perfectly aware I may be 30-something years behind others as to this game-tip.

I’ve only gotten to the first balloon. -

I anyway agree Pitfall 2 is very good game, with lots of atmosphere, and this chunky, colourful look and upbeat (Indiana Jones-like) background music. What do you think about HERO? -

Ok, so sound. Guess I haven’t taken so much notice of that. Super-Breakout is a sort of gametype I’m not very good at all, so I haven’t played it much, since I often gets frustrated. That, of course, doesn’t mean its a bad game; its probably very good. Just never mastered this genre. -

So, how is the 2600 version superior, in your opinion? -

I’ve seen some playthrough where it ends with a balloon-ascension. Is that end of world 1, or end-of-game? -
Which Atari 7800 games are to one you love most, and why these?

My own list would be, as a combination of what I have played the most so far and what entertains me the most (this may change in the future): 1. Scrapyard Dog 2. Ninja Golf 3. Commando 4. Pole Position 2 5. Motor Psycho 6. Xevious 7. Double Dragon 8. Ikari Warriors 9. Mario Bros 10. Galaga 11. Rampage 12. Fatal Run 13. Dark Chambers 14. Planet Smashers 15. Alien Brigade 16. Tower Toppler 17. Robotron 2084 18. Food Fight 19. Super Huey 20. Desert Falcon (after this, I’m uncertain; I’m in the process of trying out many of these games and haven’t gotten deeply into them). But the last 10 of these will probably be re-ranked as I find out more what I like to come back to over time. I’m absolutely aware that, say, Food Fight is a much better game than Double Dragon (7800), so they’ll probably swap some day.(Or Food Fight will move upwards in one way or another). But I’m just more interested in beating (!) Double Dragon right now. Hard to say why something catches ones attention. When that’s said, I’ve had the 7800 since January, so things may change. Still I do find Scrapyard Dog, Pole Position 2, Ninja Golf and Commando all very entertaining. And I think these will remain favourites with me for this console. Scrapyard Dog is ,yes difficult, but I find myself putting it into the console all the time, coming back for more jumping and (attempted) dog-resquing. But, ok, I admit I love the sidescrolling platformer-genre, or platform games in general. -

New game when you beat it? How so? (I’ve only browsed some YouTube video. Personally I haven’t gotten far at all, like to the ballon or a little past that). -

Agree with many of these. Are these from top to bottom in priority, or no special order, just favourites? -
