BUMP. Got the other controls, still looking for a CX-80.
-
OK, I don't think I have the right tools to do it. I will have to do some shopping. I found some info that I need a 0.075 hex tool, plastic or fiber glass only. EDIT: this kit has a 0.078 hex tool, closest I can find.

Here are photos of the inside of this 2600. Is this the hole? It kinda looks dark orange. Or this one? I saw video of someone adjusting here for RF.

Hey all, I just received a heavy sixer. It's in nice shape, and I get a good RF picture but the sound is just pure static fuzz. Not even any game sounds detectable under the static. From what I read, I need to adjust the RF pot in the little metal box on the lower right. I do see a hole on either side, but no tool I tried seems to take. I have seen references to an allen wrench, but again nothing I have fits. I have also seen reference to a "Ramsey RF tool" but since RadioShack of old is no more, could not find any specific info. Can anyone please tell me exactly what tool I need to adjust the RF? Thanks.

Tempest, Venture etc. - cart only or other options?
TapperP replied to TapperP's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
All interesting stuff. Well, me personally I would not pay that sort of money for a 3rd party cart these days. I have bought a couple of original Atari carts CIB recently in that price range, but those are vintage Atari and have value to me personally as objects themselves. New games I'm willing to buy as digital copies to run on flash cart or sdrive. Without that option I'm out, unless the cart price is low enough to justify buying (maybe $20 - $30 at most) and even then I'd try to dump it with my Maxflash programmer if possible to use on flash/sdrive (I dumped my original Star Raiders cart last night and ran it from flash which was kinda cool for me, since I never dumped a game before). That's just me - I fully respect if others are OK buying for higher prices. -
Thank you!

Tempest, Venture etc. - cart only or other options?
TapperP replied to TapperP's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
Yikes. Thank you for the info. I looked at the site where they sell the carts and it looked really sketchy. A shame, Tempest and Venture are personal favorites and the ports looked great. 😞 -
I saw a video last night showing really nice looking ports of games like Tempest 2000, Venture, Animal Keeper etc. From what I saw these are available as carts (for fairly high prices IMO). I would personally prefer to buy a digital ROM copy to use on a flash cart, especially at a lower price. Is there such an option for these games? If so, please let me know where.

I have a heavy sixer shipping to me this week. I have a new AC adapter ready to go for it, and ordered one of those RF to coaxial adapters. I know the heavy sixer doesn't have a channel selector, so I'm just wondering how it works when hooked up to a TV or VCR. Does it automatically output to channel 2 or 3 or? Thanks for any info.

Cool, thanks for sharing these. One question I have is can you save your hi-score with the WoW xex? IIRC the original disk version could save your hi-score if you pressed 'S' after a game. I recall trying another xex and it did not.

*New* pictures of our Atari 8-bit setups

I agree. If people enjoy modding a case that's fine with me. Personally I like keeping these computers clean and original. -
Improved version of Screaming Wings
TapperP replied to Franco Catrin's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
Just tried in Altirra. Looks and plays great! Thank you for sharing it. Are there bosses? How many levels does it have? Will try on real hardware later. Is this xex NTSC or PAL? -
Did I waste money buying a 2600 when I already own an 800XL?
TapperP replied to donjn's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
Oh yes, I will be getting one for sure! 😃 Switching out carts is so 1977. -

Good stuff! @Timothy Kline Man, I kinda lust after the 1200XL. Back when it came out I wanted one so bad, but I was a kid and damn lucky to have my 800. I bow to your awesome Atari setup! -

TapperP replied to donjn's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
Not a waste. I actually just bought a heavy sixer 2600 today (chose it for pure nostalgia since it's what I had as a kid many years ago), and I already have 2 Atari computers. 2600 plays a lot of fun games that are not available on the computers. None of us are getting any younger, we're in the midst of difficult times, and Atari stuff helps me feel less depressed. It's not like these things cost massive amounts of money, so go for it. -
Atari 800 - what causes it to freeze sometimes?
TapperP replied to TapperP's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
I don't know how to fix it... 😛 But I do have it wrapped up and safely stored for posterity. -
I really enjoyed looking through the "Old pictures of our Atari 8-bit setups" thread, but it made feel a bit sad since I don't think I have a single photo of my beloved Atari 800 from back in the day. But, at least I can take photos of my "new" Atari 8bit computer setup, and I thought it would be fun to see what other people have and how they've setup everything. So, I'll start it off with my current setup. Both the 800 and 130XE were acquired from Atariage members over the past couple of weeks, and I am thrilled to have Atari computers again after nearly 2 decades. They are both in superb condition and very clean. The monitor is a Sony PVM-2030. Star Raiders appropriately displayed as a work of art Lovely 800 with no yellowing (it may look a bit in photos but in real life it's not) Equally lovely 130XE with fully working keyboard and RAM (so happy!) Young and old, but both supermodels 🙂 Yeah, I like Repton a lot (plus it helped me diagnose a bad RAM card) OK, there's mine, now show me yours. I know many of you have amazing Atari 8bit setups, so let's see 'em!

Sure, I'll take one please. I do have a nice one now though, but would love to have the box and stuff again. 🙂

Atari 800 - what causes it to freeze sometimes?
TapperP replied to TapperP's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
😃 Just passed another 8+ hours straight running Repton, in fact I'm playing the game now. I hereby declare this Atari 800 exorcised of its RAM devils. -
Errr.... That's pretty horrid.

Atari 800 - what causes it to freeze sometimes?
TapperP replied to TapperP's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
UPDATE: 8 hours straight without freezing! I am now fairly sure it was indeed that middle RAM board, so it looks like maybe I'm lucky and it I just needed to replace it. 😃 Will test again tomorrow, but I'm very encouraged. Thanks again to everyone who offered help - I always learn new things from you guys. -
Atari 800 - what causes it to freeze sometimes?
TapperP replied to TapperP's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
Huge thank you to all who offered advice and expertise my way with this issue. The person who sold me this 800 sent me a new 16K RAM board that just arrived today. First I replaced the rear RAM board with the new one and Repton again froze after maybe 15 minutes. Then I replaced the middle RAM board with the new one, and it has been running for over 4 hours now without freezing! So, it's looking good so far... I'm gonna let it keep running and see how it does. If it makes it to 8 hours without freezing I think maybe the problem was that middle RAM board. That would be great if it's that simple. Fingers crossed! -
Converter to use modern controllers on Atari?
TapperP replied to TapperP's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
I can do basic soldering, so yeah I can probably handle that. I'll bookmark this as a maybe. I'm not desperate to use a modern controller, it would just be a nice option. Was just wondering if that was a simple plug-n-play adapter and apparently there isn't one. -

Atari 800 - what causes it to freeze sometimes?
TapperP replied to TapperP's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
Thanks for the replies. Later tonight I will open it up and do some reseating and cleaning. Rybags -- it's 48K, 3 x 16K modules. They are all bare, not inside plastic casings. And yes, the retaining bridge is there as well. I have tried swapping before. When Repton freezes, even the Reset button does nothing. It just froze again after only maybe 10 minutes.
