I don't understand Conan here. The tanks game and Pitfall must have been incredible at the time and they look pretty fun today.
Once more, video games don't receive the respect they receive as an interactive form or art.
Something that important in human culture should not be treated like that by a professional journalist with millions of viewers.

Yeah, same game but you can save anywhere instead of limited saves with just a few crystals. That definitely changes the pace of the game. The version I played 23 years ago had no videos and no music and that made the experience much better, more mysterious.
It's interesting how I prefer games with no voices or dialogs such as Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, Croc or the pirated version of Tomb Raider for PC with no voices or CGI scenes. I feel that story in video games is usually heavily overrated and I believe it's better to make the player interact with the environment in a way that they create their own story. Not sure how that affects anxiety, though.

Hey @Nintendo64, perhaps I didn't understand your "requirements" when I recommended Shadow of the Colossus.
I believe you said you didn't want to feel like the world is too big, right? I think you were looking for some quiet experiences with pseudo open worlds that are not super big and where things kind of "fit into place" as you explore.
I still believe Shadow of the Colossus is a game everyone should play, but the world is definitely large and playing the game could have a melancholic or frustrating effect if you just need a more predictable experience. I like to discover things in the world of Shadow of the Colossus, but so much exploration can generate anxiety. I never thought about it.
So if you already tried that game and it was bad for you, perhaps I can change that recommendation to give you some pseudo open worlds:
- Tomb Raider (MS-DOS version preferably, as you can save anywhere): This game is a masterpiece and it has that kind of pseudo open world experience you are looking for. Yeah, there are some animals that appear ouf of nowhere, but after you kill them it's a relaxing experience where you explore some caverns or tombs that look bad but feel great. The shape of the levels is fantastic and you can find secrets and stuff. You can use several types of jumps to access to remote places, so you can spend a lot of time planning your next move in those mysterious places. It could work for you. The version I prefer is a CD rip without videos and music and I also played it in low res. The end result was pretty relaxing for me.
- Ico (PS2): Similar feel of Shadow of the Colossus, but the graphics are more defined and the world is not so open. The good thing of SotC is that there are no enemies in the open world, but in this case there are very few enemies and exploring the castle feels good. It can be relaxing. This game doesn't have the drama of SotC, it all feels more spontaneous as you control the little kid.

Here are my recommendations for the different systems I've owned:
- Amstrad CPC (also available for C64 and others): Bruce Lee.
- MS-DOS: Loom.
- Playstation: Croc.
- Playstation 2 (if it counts as retro!): Shadow of the Colossus.

I don't think Calcio Storico Florentino is a video game. I think it's a traditional Italian sport that could work as a video game.

@Intellivision Master A suggestion: Perhaps we would finish earlier if you just mentioned the retro/arcade games from the 80s you don't want on the Amico.

Hey @Urlu Berlu, since we don't have much to talk about, can you tell us how did you get that video? Do you think a movie adaptation of your story would work?

The other day I missed the deleted political messages, but today I was here to see the autodeleted Cloudy Mountain preview.
It feels good! I feel like I've seen a shooting star.

Did I miss something? I don't see any politics on the last pages. Was any message removed? 😇

(Not that) offtopic: I just can't believe what is going on with The Last of Us 2. Everyone is talking about the story of the game. Hundreds and hundreds of pages about politics, characters, deaths, plot twists...
But this is a game! And I love the graphics of this game, and it looks like I could like the exploration parts, but honestly:
1) Combat, upgrading weapons... Those gameplay elements are always the same, they are tiresome and repetitive.
2) The story is not that great, folks. It's just like The Walking Dead with a bit more realism and drama and less fun, that's it.
Why am I more interested in Shark! Shark! than in The Last of Us 2? Because, even if it's super simple,
1) It's a game
2) It has no forced drama
3) It has no gore
4) People will get together to play it instead of discussing the freaking plot online
I don't understand that 99% of Sony fans in 2020 don't realize about this. I feel like I'm living in some kind of alternative reality or dream.
Imagine if people called "music" a monument tour where you entered a building such as a castle and then, every 10 minutes, some speakers played a few notes of a melody.
Imagine if people called "drama" a representation with no actors where the public just listened to songs inside a theater.
Imagine if somebody called "paintings" the works of art in an exposition which consisted of hundreds of words written on dozens of canvases, telling a story.
But nobody does that! Only video games are treated like that, and it's sad. It's sad because they should use those resources to create interactive and original experiences instead of B movies.

Hey @Juice, you created an Atari Age account in January and only have posted in this thread. These are some of your ideas:
- It seems a little silly to play for a game that's something like Poker (link)
- You didn't think there would be 2600 people waiting to get the Founders Edition (link)
- The gameplay trailer has done more harm than good (link)
- You asked if the gamepad was just a touch screen and said that Playstation controllers have one and people don't like it (link)
- You called everyone in this topic a yes-men and said everyone knows CEOs fail when they get surrounded by them (link)
- You said that the day Tommy released several trailers, including the Farkle demo, was not a very good day for the Amico (link)
- You called Lukas's initial uniformed and extremely negative video "interesting insights" (link)
- You asked everyone here to get real and accept that the hype for the Amico has come down (link)
So my question is, what the fork are you looking for here? You seem quite a bit obsessed with something you don't appear to like too much, to say it softly.
Oh, I get it... You must be "on the fence".

3655 on the first attempt, apparently I got one wrong. No bad for not having the Intellivision as a kid.

@LordRayken... I mean, @Stillagamer is the living proof that my theory was correct: sadly, most people who started playing with the 16 bit systems become graphic whores / elitists.
You guys were really lucky to start playing with the Atari 2600 and Intellivision, with those huge pixels on the screen. I started playing a bit later, with Amstrad CPC, but the pixels were still there, many games had only 2 or 4 colors and none of the games looked like a TV cartoon.
Starting with those simple graphics as a child makes you appreciate what came later and understand what a video game is. This is why the PS5 presentation was so disappointing for me as a former Sony fanboy: 95% of the games were presented as movies, with the focus on the story and characters instead of the gameplay.

I use Dual Shock1 (PS1) controllers to play PS2 games (except for the few ones where they don't work). PS2's analog buttons suck, the first Dual Shock is much better.

@spoonman We've been talking about that for weeks. Tommy even made a review of the game last Sunday. Tommy says the Amico will offer individual board/card games adding more depth and value to each and drastically improving certain aspects which feel lacking on Nintendo's product, such as the audio, the AI or the fact that you can play 4 players without buying additional controllers.

I don't remember where I saw the Amico first mentioned. I think I was checking some ex friend's Twitter (yeah I sometimes do thinks like that when I'm bored), the guy is a retro gaming fan and he used to have a Genesis (Mega Drive here in Spain), so he probably tweeted something about the new Earthworm Jim.
This was a huge coincidence, because I don't really check video game news outside of the big ones (i. e. PS5 final looks, etc.) and I'm not into modern retro-style indie stuff either.
I was very interested to learn more about this mysterious new system and I discovered the Playdate around the same time, so I started opening topics about both consoles in several Spanish forums. In one of them, one guy mentioned this thread in Atari Age and how Tommy was revealing stuff 24x7 here, so I created 30 accounts: all the new users from the last year are actually me. Just kidding! I just have this one for now.

I'd love to see some kind of documentary about the design of the console and the controller. I'd pay some money to capture the moment where they decide to go with the numeric pad. I doubt it went through a proper testing phase with video game players.

I think the Jaguar had some potential. I think they should have released more:
- FPS with the Doom engine
- Cinematic platformers (such as Prince of Persia or Abe's Oddysee)
- Graphic adventures (perhaps making the cursor move instantly from icon to icon and from object to object instead of moving it)
- Basic but fluid 3D games (such as Hard Drivin')
The console was perfectly capable of that.
I also don't understand how they gave the controller the green light.

Speaking about playing with your daughter, Sega Lord X made a video a couple of days ago about his favorite current generation games. Virtually all the games consisted in exploring huge, realistic 3D environments: BotW, RDR2... Even he noticed this, how he went from playing hardcore arcade-style games some decades ago to this. He also mentioned that he plays those games with his daughter.
As a 100% retro gamer who hasn't bought a home console since 2003, it's obvious I have different tastes than him and that's fine. I would never spend so much time wandering around those huge environments. I feel like those games try to steal my real life from me, I had enough after finishing every single GTA appeared on the PS2.
So while I respect his choices, I think the video is pretty interesting for a couple of reasons: how the industry has "forced us" to like this absorbent type of games and how sometimes people, especially hardcore gamers, try to play "the wrong games" with their kids: I don't think children should play games that require you to be there 4 hours a day, exploring an environment that never ends.
So, even if you disagree with the Amico approach about ratings (crazy how the haters are now comparing Tommy's comments about the Switch to the accusations against the game Doom after Columbine: check out the 57 replies of Smash JT's comment on Tommy's interview with Lukas, boy those guys have free time), I think the Amico can have a positive impact in our overall health by offering more simple games that are actually designed to be played together with anyone, from kids to elders, and where you can have fun for 15 or 30 minutes and you don't need to spend 5 hours a day to feel satisfied.

I love it when Tommy is answering messages written 10 hours ago and you know he will eventually reach your message written 3 hours ago. It's a feeling of anticipation similar to this:
Haha, just kidding. About the James C comment, yeah... At this point I kind of wish there were more educated people against the Amico to debate with, those guys are just getting boring and I almost feel sorry for them. James say we are in an echo chamber. Well, here's all the concerns Tommy has answered for me:
- Controller looks weird, does it actually feel good in your hands? > He said testing groups said so
- How are you going to have people buy your machine without the brand recognition? > By intelligent marketing to moms
- Don't you think it's best to ignore the haters? -> He said he just wanted to clarify lies (but finally ended up doing that)
- Aren't you afraid that non gamers will get confused by retro reimagined games? -> Not likely, all games will be easy to play
And this is coming from a shill with an Intellivision-derived name. Of course, my nickname is a self-parody: I try not to spend too much time with Amico-related things, I just hope it comes out and sells 200M. My nickname is kind of an inside joke, as I come from a world full of Sony and Nintendo fanboys and I wanted to be a fanboy of something too, I wanted to know how it feels. 🤘

Intellivision Amico - Tommy Tallarico introduction + Q&A
