  1. I have just added Colecovision and Odyssey²/Videopac. I also added most of the retro handhelds. And Apple II. I will leave it for today. Heh.

By the way, if anyone knows a list of Apple II type-ins or freeware games created back in the day, let me know in the comments. Perhaps I should filter by Publisher on the online Excel with the list of games and select some magazine games.

EDIT: Yeah, I'm counting every game offered for free and also commercial modern homebrews. It's not very accurate, but after all it's just a list of games and a curious way to see how much love receives each system.

  2. Hey zzip, I apologize. There must be errors, I assume that. I will ask the admins to allow me to edit the first message to add the missing systems (that's undeniable) and the missing games (that's more than likely).

I have done the best that I could.

Also, I used the term "type-ins" for type-ins and magazine cover games that were never released commercially.

The criteria seems odd but there's an explanation: the databases don't have enough filters, so I was forced to use a rough estimation by counting the games released after the "commercial life" of a system, the type-ins...

This is an open project and all corrections are welcomed. My intention was to check the state of each homebrew scene, as I'm a bit curious and confused as to why some system have thousands of homebrew games and others have 100 or zero.

I was afraid to lost all the work and I knew I was not going to be able to edit the message 1 hour after sending it, so I decided to leave it as it is for now.

My favorite console is the PS1 and the scene is depressing... I'm also surprised there aren't more games for the 16 bit consoles.

As you said, I hope it's just a mistake and there are hundreds more! 😎

Worst Games: Many "adult" games that came out over the years were downright terrible.

In particular, arcade-style games that basically used the mature theme to sell, but didn't have any other redeeming quality (not even a basic storyline, or some kind of card game simulation).

You gotta choose one of those. Rules of the topic. 🤓

Seriously, it would be great to know the name of one of them, the one you disliked the most. I'm curious now.

I did want to acknowledge this and let you know I did see it after the fact and want to thank you for your kind words. :)

Actually, I was referring to the second video posted by LePionnier (he had only posted 2 videos at that point and then edited his message to add a third video, the one where you say that you've ordered the Founders).

But it's okay, we can still be friends... I mean, we both love the Amico and the original Playstation (my favorite console of all time, but I didn't buy it on day one as you, I waited until late '97). 😎

    • Haha 2

  6. If we count 1990 (technically it's part of the 80s), I'd say The Secret of Monkey Island.

If not (as it's generally accepted), Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (the adventure game).

As I said on the "Choose the best and worst game you've ever played" thread, there's a very cool 1h15min retrospective video in Youtube about both games, Lucasarts and adventure games in general.

  7. Welcome to the topic, The Atari Creep! I'm glad you join the discussion.

I also wanted to apologize: After reading your message, I now believe that your video "Anybody hate both the Atari VCS & Intellivision Amico?", which uses the caption "Both are CRAP?" in the preview and where you ask your viewers to look for opinions that say "fuck both of these things, they're both pieces of shit", was informative and not trying to be controversial. 👍

Back to the topic, I gotta say I agree with Swami: The new VIP Edition could be a great opportunity for thousands of fans who didn't get the Founders, including me. I don't understand people who have already ordered another edition being against it because theirs become less special. Why would they be upset if someone else gets it?

  8. The Atari Creep seems to be desperately trying to be on the fence about the Amico to generate a debate and get more views. He clearly likes the machine, he even says he will buy it, but he keeps encouraging everyone to love AND also to hate the console. This is his second attempt: his last video was titled "The Amico and the VCS... both suck?", but then he didn't give any reasons for the Amico to suck, he said he just wanted people who think it sucked to comment on the video. 😌

  9. Thanks for the answers, I'm learning a lot and remembering a few things too.

I especially like CatPix reply, where both his best and worst games are PS1 survival horrors.

Silent Hill is definitely on my top 10 games. It was one of the surprise masterpieces that started appearing for the PS1 just after I bought the console in late 1997.

I was really lucky: major titles as Metal Gear Solid, Silent Hill, Driver, GTA or Gran Turismo, Abe's Odyssee, Spyro did not even exist when I decided to save my weekly allowance for 6 months to buy the console. I only knew Twisted Metal 2, Goal Storm/Winning Eleven (old name of Pro Evolution Soccer), Soul Blade and Resident Evil.

I ended up "buying" (actually buying copies) of so many hidden gems or unexpected hits... some of them belonged to genres I haven't even played before (dancing games, musical creation games...). And the coolest thing is that most games were Japanese or American and so these copies were NTSC, removing the PAL borders and 15% slower speed of official conversions.

It was a cold February of 1999 and a friend and I bought two copies: Silent Hill and Siphon Filter. The deal was that the final owner of each game would be the one to play the other game for some weeks until it's finished, and then finally each true owner will have his game forever. So I chose Silent Hill as my true game and started playing Siphon Filter. I stopped after the second stage: Since mid 1997, I had played for the first time and finished Doom, Duke Nukem, Quake, Blood, Tomb Raider and Metal Gear Solid. Siphon Filter simply didn't have a chance. I was busy with Tomb Raider 3, International Superstar Soccer/Goal Storm/Winning Eleven and probably some 3D platform game, so I was not in a hurry.

After a few weeks, we finally interchanged our games and I started playing Silent Hill. I can see why CatPix chose it as the best: the game had everything. It has amazing graphics, even using the PS1 limitations to create the fog and using pictures of real buildings as textures. It has outstanding sound, with those noises instead of normal music during the intense sections. And it has perfect gameplay, with fun and balanced action, interesting exploration and only a few puzzles that are just difficult enough. The story is kind of okay for a movie but this is a game, so the narrative is perfect. There are almost no dialogs, you are living the experience.

I decided to play the game on normal but without using bullets except when necessary, only with the crowbar. Good times! I also committed the mistake of playing the game 1-2 hours ever night, just before going to bed. Man, those were the worst nightmares I've ever had. I will never play the game again for this reason.

But I recommend everyone to give it a try. Definitely better than the first 3 Resident Evils, where your inventory is limited and have to use chests to store things. They are also not as immersive by a mile. Silent Hill has a few WTF gameplay (not story related) elements that I can't reveal but that every player should experience.

    • Thanks 1

  10. Thanks digdugnate, that was really insightful. 👍

Back to the topic, for me it would be:

Best game: The Secret of Monkey Island (1990) (check out this amazing 1h review of the game I just discovered)

    Worst game: Amstrad Jumper (1985)

By the way, Tommy Tallarico answered this question the other day. The best one for him was Super Mario World and the worst one High Heat Baseball 2003.

  11. In fact, looking at things from the perspective of the present is the biggest problem the world is facing today in any single matter you can name.

By the way, the (evil, "communist") government of my country will be the next to ban loot boxes. This is one of the coolest things about the Amico: everyone pays the same for the game, developers don't take advantage of addicts.
