What's the lowest bitrate you can use before you get to the point where the game won't load?I find that 44.1KHz, 128k/s mono has the best results.
an MP3 cd sounds like it could work, since most MP3 cd players have a function where you could jump by DIRECTORIES... so you could theoretically group the rom mp3's into groups of 10 (or whatever) into seperate directories and be that much more easier to navigate as opposed to a straight audio cd where the tracks are always 'in the root' so to speakI confirmed this last night. I had five zip files of 2600 ROMs which I converted to wavs then to MP3s, just leaving them in their five directories. I did a quick burn of an 8cm CD (~560 encoded ROMs are a whole 80MBytes) and whacked it in my little RipGo!. Skipping to the game you want is dramatically easier. I'm inclined to setup 27 folders (1, A, B ... Z) and put the appropriate games in each folder by name. I'll work on file naming and tagging in my "spare time"
An MP3 edition is easier to maintain once I've caught up with all the available ROMs too.
Meanwhile, I'm still trying to workout what to do about a nice case for the disc(s).

Although I do love the Player! It's nice isn't it? I'm going to pickup some GBA Sonic titles now, they deserve the big screen. I can barely wait for a friend of mine to finish with Metroid Fusion so I can borrow it -- if I see it for sale I'll probably pick it up.

the internet has failed me on this occasion.Me too.
Thanks for looking into it. I've spent most of today on and off looking for DVD-esq 8cm disc cases with no luck. Plenty of media, which there wasn't a year or so ago. Jewel boxes and slip covers no problem, but they're just not up to the task, both physically and design-wise.
I had been thinking of getting a cardboard folding thing made but I was having real problems with the spindle. When I bought my GameCube Gameboy Player bundle and Super Smash Brother Melee on the weekend I knew that I could make something look nice with either the little case that the Gameboy Player boot disc is in, or the DVD-sized case that SSBM was in. The trick is finding a place that supplies them...

Nintendo USA sells the disc cases on their site [email protected] $1.00, 4 for $5.00 and 7 for $10.00.. but they don't ship out of the USA..Nintendo Oz can't supply the normal GC game cases as a spare part. There is a contact person if I want to discuss my project, but I don't think they'll play ball if it isn't licensed Nintendo Gamecube software development.
Good idea though.

Does anyone know where I can get empty DVD-style cases to suit the GameCube's 8cm disc format? Something the size of the Gameboy Player's disc case would be handy, or equally cool would be a case that can fit 2, 3 or 6 discs.
Thanks.

A suggestion -- I don't know if the MP3 format would butcher up the audioNope, works fine. I used my Rio MP3 player with my CC for a while (until the battery contacts started to suck.
)You have a good point though. I was sort of aiming for audio CDs because that's the way that the original was done, but there are so many MP3 playing stand alone CD players that perhaps the single CD version is best as a collection of MP3s. I own one of these. Which is one of the reasons I was interested in doing an 8cm version of the CCU. I wonder how many MP3s it can cope with on a single CD.
"Cuttle Cart Underground MP3 edition" -- sounds good.

Turns out I don't have time to sell anything like this either. Thanks for the interest people, but I'll just have to keep packing it tighter and tighter.

This undead project lives on.
I finally printed the prototype labels this morning.
I still have the names of those couple of people who were interested.
The CCU Jnr project, if it ever gets finished, will simply be to recreate the original CCU disks in an 8cm format. No changes, no updates, just the original set. Chance are that I'll only make three or four prototypes.
More interestingly, I've just ordered a very cool CD burner that can pack more data on a CD than it should. I'll be doing some serious testing with this drive and if it can pack an extra 20% onto an audio CD, I might break the 99 track barrier (by using indexes, don't know how most drives' skip funtions with indexes) and see just how many games can be put on a single CD. Compatibilty will be an issue, but I've got somewhere in the order of 10 significantly different classic CD devices that it can be tested on to get some idea of how well it might work across the board. This might be a seventh CD with titles released since the original CCU or it might be used to reduce the CCU to four 8cm discs or possibly one full-sized disc. (A normal 8cm data disc holds 185MBytes of data. A typical 12cm disc holds 700MBytes of data. Since converting down to 8cm discs required no changes, we can assume that a single volume is equivalent to no more than 185MBytes. The new drive I'm getting can fit 1Gig on a 700MByte, or 1.2Gig on a seriously over-burnt 99min CD.)

Bah, it's all just Space Harrier with different graphics and sound.Space Harrier is just a scrolling shoot-em-up done with zoom rather than scroll. And scrolling shooters are just Space Invaders with a moving background.
So, really, Rez is just Space Invaders with better graphics and sound.

Just build a MiniATX PC and run a SIO2PC cable from it. I really should get my 800XL up and running again...
-
Panzer Dragoon Orta on Xbox plays similarly. Is it the same engine? It's just not as psychedelic and Tron-esque as Rez.The original Panzer Dragoons always played like Orta/Rez -- which is why I'm surprised that Rez rated so well. The graphics and music are enjoyable and all, but the gameplay is almost identical to Panzer Dragoon. (Which itself is just the next step up from Afterburner/Novastorm.)

Where'd you get this one. There's a woman frequently at the Karinyup (sp?) swap-meet that has heaps of toys plus the occasional video game thing. I've bought stuff from her before, but I can't think what. Possibly my first SMS, but some other cart stuff more recently.
Any funky projects for the system..?

Of course, I gave it away along with a CDTV.I miss my CDTV too

The A600 and A1200 were quite popular over here in Australia, though not nearly as popular as the original 500. I think the biggest disappointment was the CD32 -- it looked and felt like a toy, especially after the CDTV, even though it was easily expanded to be just as functional as a 600 with a CD drive.
If I hadn't been primarly a PC person, I would have done more Amiga stuff...

Sega SC-3000, two controllers, five titles (three boxed), three games, basic and music composition cart. I had to find a spare one of my Sega Megadrive power supplies though. Everything I've tested so far works. A$12.

Well, I finally hooked my PAL 2600 Jr up to my Australian (PAL, but NTSC compatible) TV through RF and all three games played fine. I think I like Funky Fish the most -- It's like Defender at a pace I can cope with.
-
My TV loves NTSC, just not through RF. In fact 99% of all PAL TVs can't handle NTSC through RF.How about: PAL TV's so old as to only have an RF in and no other inputs typically can't sync to 60Hz.
Any TV sold in a PAL region and advertised as NTSC compatible will accept the signal from any input.
-
That was pretty quick, glad to hear they arrived safely! Have you tried playing them on a PAL television yet?A PAL TV? No. If they have NTSC frame rates then they'll only roll on my PAL-only TV. But I'll give them a go an report back.
Okay, as expected, when playing the game on my PAL what's-this-NTSC-thing-you-keep-mentioning? TV it rolls. It is in colour though and obviously works aside from the rolling.
...Funky Fish rolls sadly...
I (always) suggest using a VCR tuner then. This makes no difference as the VCR can't adjust the frame rate. If you have a TV that can almost sync I guess the VCR might stabilise a dodgy 60Hz.

Typically, between an NTSC cart and a PAL deck, I end up experiencing "PAL-60" on my big Phillips Matchline TV, which can more or less sync to anything. I'll report back with that experience too.

What region?
I've got three or four of that list as PAL (Europe/Australia) and one NTSC/Japan
