DreamCast VGA box NEED HELP!!!!
krisjohn replied to VidGameKing's topic in Modern Console Discussion
Games that are incompatible with the VGA adapter (Resident Evil: Code Veronica, Midway classic arcade games...) display a "not compatible" screen on a VGA monitor after the standard Dreamcast logo is shown. If it comes up blank then there's a problem. I can't imagine why it's so hard to code support for the VGA adapter, but lack of support for it is the one reason why I haven't played RE:CV *at all* since I bought it. -
Hi all, I got my Japanese e-reader in the post yesterday, plus assorted cards, so I thought you'd all like a quick review. * The Japanese e-reader only reads Japanese cards and does not read the NES game cards that I purchased at the same time. Therefore I only have Pokemon cards to test with. * The Pokemon cards designed to work with the e-reader have card/critter details on the short strip. They then have applications (games), or parts of ones, on the long strip -- or some have some sort of music thing. Many applications span multiple cards and you'll have to collect all of the right cards to activate the application. You can scan the parts in any order and when you scan one it tells you the card numbers for the rest. The games that you can play are typically very simple and fans of the old Game and Watch games will probably enjoy them quite a bit. There are also such things as a coin flipper and I'm sure there will be other card game related tools. * The Japanese model blocks the comms port. This means I can't use the light I purchased with it. The American version has a pass-through port -- I don't know if a worm light will still work. There are also possibly more upgrades to it. I have ordered a US version, so I might find out soon. * It's light -- really light. * The dot code is so damn fine that you'll need some very expensive equipment to copy it. I might scan a bit at the highest res my scanner will do and post it here. Maybe on the weekend. Now I have to collect all the Japanese Pokemon-e cards, dammit. 3 series plus millions of promos... HTH, Chris J.

Less than two years ago I picked up a boxed, complete, mint-condition Sega Mega CD II at a local Target of all places. Many of the older Targets around here have still got Quickshot NES controllers they're trying to get rid off, but no other old stuff. Except the occasional pile of N64s for A$69 each (~US$40), if you call them old. I bought a couple at that price a while back. Flame orange -- I'd be using one if Nintendo hadn't dropped S-Video support in its later PAL models. And if I'd played an N64 game some time in the last six months... I should dust off the N64 I've got setup and pack it away somewhere safe.

Hi all, Anyone know of an Australian on-line store that's selling Japenese Pokemon trading card game cards? I'm specifically looking for boosters of the first three e-reader/e-card sets. The reason I'm after an Australian reseller is postage cost -- the little suckers are heavy. Also, I'm interested in large enough quantities that I'd probably trip customs duty even though they're strickly for a private collection. TIA, CJ.

Nope, in the approx. two years I've been heavily into collecting retro video games systems this is the first Intellivision I've seen. Litterally seen -- I've not seen an Intellivision before this one, at least not that I remember (as in, I might have seen one as a kid when they were first released). This is ignoring eBay, of course. Mind you, I've only seen two 7800s, half a dozen 2600s, about 4 C64s... I've never seen a Colecovision or XEGS "in the wild" -- I got mine off of eBay.

Today I scored a PAL Intellivision with: Computer module (w/ instructions) Shark! Shark! Snafu Qbert Tron Deadly Discs Space Armada Burger Time Dracula Most games boxed with instructions and overlays. What I've tested so far works. A$5 (~US$2.75) And Donkey Kong Game and Watch, loose, A$1.

Your predictions for the future of video game collecting?
krisjohn replied to atari art's topic in Classic Console Discussion
That's a slippery slope. Currently my handheld collection includes: Gameboy Gameboy Pocket Gameboy Colour Sega Game Gear PC Engine GT A GBA will be bought when some accessories I've ordered from overseas arrive. That's not including the assorted Game and Watch style devices I own, particularly my Nintendo Mini-Classic collection. Or the Barcode Battler, or portable Monopoly LCD game, etc, etc The reason I don't have a Lynx is that it was stolen a while back and I just haven't got around to getting one again. The only downside with old portable units is the huge number of batteries they need. Six AAs are the average requirements. -
Your predictions for the future of video game collecting?
krisjohn replied to atari art's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Since collecting itself is not mainstream, I doubt that original old games will ever be traded by anyone other than a relatively small group of enthusiasts. People think they are collectors, when in fact they're just normal consumers. Think of all the "Collector's Edition" DVDs that were released. The only true collector's edition DVD I know of is the Powerpuff Girls DVD that was distributed with a virus and recalled. What's more likely is that companies will continue to release popular old favourites for each new platform -- purely in an effort to cash in, not as any service to real enthusiasts. Casual fans will be attracted, but hard-core collectors will see it for the cash-cow-milking that it is. Personally, I tend to head towards innovative technology in the video gaming field. (My GBA e-reader plus NES cards should be on its way by now -- It'll look nice next to my Barcode Battler.) Value-adding I guess it could be called. I don't just want a remake, I want an interesting remake. Also, I love interesting expansions, always have. The 32X was a major player in me getting hooked on retro video game stuff. I'm sure each person here is different, but I would guess that we'll all wander off in our respective directions in a year or 10. New fans, well, many new fans look like they use "emulation" and "free" interchangably, so I don't hold out a lot of hope of the hobby continuing to exist as-is. But all it would take is for something like a major museum to decide that old video games are legitimate historial artifacts (rather than just a way to get kids through the doors), or for the extensions to copyright to be repealed and predicting the future of video game collecting would be impossible. -
Does anyone know a good on-line store that can supply the new Gameboy e-reader, the PAL TV-output mod for a Gameboy Advance and a bunch of e-reader cards (NES and e-pokemon)? And that ships to Australia? TIA.

Pokemon Mini Development informations & emulator?
krisjohn replied to Heaven/TQA's topic in Programming
(Via Google's image search "pokemon mini") There's some nice info at: http://www.electronicdungeon.co.uk/acatalo...on_Mini_26.html They're interesting little things, but a bit too expensive for what they are. In a year's time you'll not be able to move around a swap-meet without stepping on one. -
http://www.nintendo-e-reader.com/ The only reason I don't have one of these is that it's not out here in Australia yet. Currently it does look there there are three main sets of games for it: * Animal Crossing (?!?) * Pokemon-e (hooked in with the trading card game) * NES titles. Quite frankly, I'm happy with just the last two. I don't intend to buy the Pokemon card game to actually play the card game, but I don't mind collecting all the swipe-able cards. And heck, I've got a NES, but that doesn't mean that this isn't a cool way to collect the classics all over again. Addressing your other points: Yes, they're just printed on card, but I don't know if they'll photocopy (might use UV ink or something). Yes, you have to swipe 5 or more cards through for some games, but it will remember the last game you loaded, so that's good news. Now I wish it'd just show up here.

Hi all, I'm trying to hook either my 800XL or XEGS, both PAL, to a USB video capture device (Hauppage WinTV USB). Thing is, if the signal is too far from a standard it wont refresh properly and/or goes off the bottom of the screen. With both units I appear to have the choice of either NTSC mode, which is black and white and too long or PAL which is colour, but freezes. Is there anywhere I can adjust the video clock or some amplifier for the strength of the signal? TIA, Chris J.

What game "hooked" you into collecting the classic
krisjohn replied to Cassidy Nolen's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Super Metroid. I hadn't realised how many good games had never been released for the PC that I grew up gaming on. I hadn't even realised that some games were exclusively released on a particular platform, as I grew up on things that were ported to the PC, Amiga, C64, etc, etc. I found my way to AtariAge, and subsequently Atari, when classicgaming.com reported on the first AA label competition. -
That "this has been scanned" line isn't worth the pixels it takes to render. No one should ever trust an email just because it says this. The second ever email I received with such a claim included a virus. If you didn't scan it, you shouldn't trust it. If it's like the free ZA, all it does it rename .exe, etc, attachments so you can't accidentally run them. That, unfortunately, means that they can be written to the hard drive without being scanned by your virus scanner.

Not wishing to start some sort of flame war, but Outlook, Outlook Express and Internet Explorer are very insecure packages. At the miminum, frequent visits to Microsoft's various Windows and Office update sites are a must. Daily updates of an antivirus package are also pretty high up the list of Good Ideas. I personally use Eudora (email) and Mozilla (browser), even though I use Windows. Mozilla (http://www.mozilla.org) is free and I strongly recommend you give it a go (it even comes with an email package). Eudora (http://www.eudora.com) is not quite so free, though there is a cut-down version or an ad-sponsored version. I have purchased the full version. This doesn't mean that I don't have an anti-virus package that's kept up to date every day. There are other, many and varied, email solutions other than Outlook (Express) and in the context of this security warning I encourage you all to explore some of them. One of my favourite sites to find useful, free, windows stuff is http://www.nonags.com. That said, Klez can be neutered with an Outlook security update that's been out for at least a year...

Okay, I found a couple of useful URLs for anyone trying to do a comparison as I have; For DOS 2.0S http://www.faqs.org/faqs/atari-8-bit/faq/s...section-39.html For SpartaDOS, et al http://www.faqs.org/faqs/atari-8-bit/faq/s...section-40.html The DOS 2.0S info contained something that caught my eye; How is this handled with the cart version?
-
So, what's Atari DOS 2.0S when it's at home? Can anyone point me at a disk image of it for APE/SIO2PC so I can see what it offers? Is it better than, say, SpartaDOS 3.whateverC, since there are a few places that have copies of that? (BTW: Was there supposed to be a link to this thread in the article on the homepage, because there isn't...)

Advice for photographing screenshots
krisjohn replied to bfloatarijunkie's topic in Classic Console Discussion
A useful trick to to make sure the area is well lit, but the brightness on the TV is way down. But yeah, no flash. -
I've got a Qb cart from Hozer and it plays fine on both my 2600 Jnr and 7800 (both PAL). I haven't tried it in my 6-switch because the slot scratches carts.

These just popped up on my saved search... http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi...item=1380215590

I picked up everything I needed for some 800XL Word Processing a little over a month ago. http://www.atariage.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=11722 It's just a shame the printer is so damn noisy. I'll get back to screwing around with my 800XL and SIO2PC cable when my interest in Neverwinter Nights drops. So, 2006 some time then.
-
It works perfectly on a PAL 2600 Jnr connected to a TV that can sync to PAL 60. Just FYI.
-
I should be checking that out this evening. MSG me if I haven't posted anything about it by the end of the week.
-
It arrived a couple of days back, but I haven't had the chance to post. Thanks to Snider-man, and sorry for being a jerk.

My #2 was also waiting at the door for me. Thanks heaps to everyone involved. Very cool. Might even get a chance to play it soon
