  1. I just finished installing windows 10 (Because I wanted to see how well it ran on this thing) on a liberated chromebook. It runs about like a computer from 2008 in all my other tests I have ran (2gb ram, 1.6ghz cpu, intel integrated gpu), but it holds up surprisingly well. Sadly, windows 10 does not want to install onto anything but the teensyweensie eMMC. (Seriously MS, just stop being dorks and allow the option to install onto SDcards. Get over yourselves.) It's really quite surprising how well old hardware still holds up these days.
  2. Hmm.. It depended a lot on what all was in that system, if a DX50 would outperform some other chip, but a DX4-100 would probably outperform it handily anyway. One of the few tasks that the DX50 really shined when performing, was playing an MP3. Normally, it took a pentium class system to do that, but a DX50 had sufficient FSB speed to crunch through.
  3. The K6 will work fine with software intended for 286 and XT systems. You might need something like MoSlow though, if the program does not make use of the hardware RTC for timing, and instead uses a busy loop to do timing. You will immediately know this is the case, if the game runs at warp speed the instant you start it. In such cases, launch it with moslow.
  4. Close, but you still need that tip lead to go into the headphone jack of the computer. to accomplish that, I used that stripped patch cable. If you will excuse my gawd-awful mspaint drawing here..
  5. There's an entire playlist of cthulu themed christmas music on youtube, of which that is one of the entries. It's also one of the better performed ones.
  6. I sacrificed a monaural headphone jack type double-male-end patch cable for this purpose. I cut the end off, then stripped the wire a good length. I could then wrap one loop around the barrel of the record lead, and wrap two loops with the other wire over the two tips. Such patch cables can be obtained at walmart, last I checked.
  7. More doodling today, as I try to keep my mind intact while listening to the (mandatory) online training courses in the background. (I DO get paid extra for doing this at home, so there's that too, but this stuff is awful.) I noticed that the bottom hair bits for the topmost girl here also seem to double as 80s retro Jacky-O sunglasses, which I found funny, and included here. They sure look surly don't they? This is mostly to show off the different eye and mouth bits I doodled up. Since they are basically universal parts, a rather wide variety of expressions can be made. I still need to make a "Frumpy" face though. The last row is made using re-used/repurposed parts from the first two. This is kinda intentional, as I want maximal bang for the buck. Seeing what I can do with what is already drawn up.
  8. Personally, I would test to see if classic99 can live inside a winPE environment. (Easiest way would be to try running it from the command line "rescue terminal" from a win7 install cd) If it works, then I would see about getting a winPE environment set up to run classic99. While finding it might be a trick (since it is no longer supported or developed, but archive.org is your buddy, but this teacher keeps a copy available as well.), BartPE would be a good starting point.
  9. Processing wise, the SoC inside it is about on par with an rPi 2. 1ghz dual core ARM, 512mb RAM. Like the Pi, the ram is soldered on and cannot be upgraded. (the cheapest offers WD has with DIMMs are going to make your piggy bank squeal. Those are Small/home office grade, not consumer.) It has a sata controller so it can do real swap, and if you put real linux on, you get zram as well. It is sufficient to run Plex with the stock software (with a little prodding), but will not do on the fly transcoding. (If the files are already coded in a streaming friendly manner, it works great though. this is the role I have my unit doing. It streams 1080p streams for me just fine.) In the past, I have tested the unit functioning as a minecraft server. It works for that purpose, but needs to be kept constrained. One task I have been contemplating trying on it, is using it as a fully SIP based BBS host. (Syncronet BBS software, with T38Modem SIP modem emulation, and a free SIP trunk service with 2 lines)
  10. Like I said, it has other purposes. The single bay units are consumer crap, yes-- But this thing can run straight linux, meaning it can do other functions than being a NAS. It also has a USB3 port on the back, and supports disks attached there. However, there are some EX2 ultra empty shells on there for 150$ ish. Those ARE 2 bay. (and the SoC supports hardware sata port multiplier.)
  11. While not TI related, this is an interesting ebay offer. https://www.ebay.com/itm/WD-Western-Digital-3TB-My-Cloud-Personal-Network-Attached-Storage-NAS/223818962353?hash=item341ca655b1:g:YIYAAOSwooFeBmiF It is for a broken** single bay Western Digital consumer grade NAS box. Why is this an interesting offer? There is very little that can be seriously damaged inside these things except the hard drive itself. It's just a little single board computer that uses uboot. It doesn't even have a locked boot loader. (You can boot straight linux on it if you want.) The indicator LED on the front indicates that it has encountered an error on startup; This means that uboot is able to start. This means that there is nothing wrong with the PCB. You can put any sata drive inside one of these that you want. (I am intimately familiar with this model of unit, as I own one, and have completely and exhaustively explored what all you can get it to do. Including getting it to host iSCSI LUNs.) Rather than a "Defective unit" sale, consider this an "Empty enclosure" sale. That's what this really is. Most people wont understand or realize that, so I am shining some light on it. I already have 2 NAS boxes, and do not need a 3rd, but if somebody needs one, this is a good offer to jump on. Seller does not know what they have. To "repair" the unit, just follow the debrick procedure. https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B_6OlQ_H0PxVQVhnLVJOdDZISUU/view
  12. The corner with the power lead, at the top, appears to have suffered a direct impact with a hard surface. A chunk of the plastic PEB top cracked out from the side of the top, and is laying on top of the metal there. The corner of the metal is mangled quite good, and the back of the PEB has buckled from the impact. The impact broke off all the plastic pegs that serve as the retainer screw terminals, allowing the plastic portion of the top to come away freely. (there is no nothing to hold it on!) You can see some of these pegs in the background of the pictures. Ksarul suggests reattaching them with UV cure resin; I have some on hand, but my UV curing light is out of state. (Lent it to a friend when he had flooding in his area, and needed to check for basement mold.) I am holding off on further investigation until tomorrow, where I have the whole weekend to invest in the process. I am interested in reporting the mishandling of the package, yes. I appreciate your sending me the forms.
  13. Possible I suppose. I will still need to... straighten... the sheet metal of the chassis though. (I incidentally DO have some UV resin on hand, but my UV flashlight is over at a friend's place, in another state, after I let him borrow it to check for basement mold.)
  14. Yup. wrong place, but yeah-- add an appropriate samba share-- OR Consider using sftp. You will need an ssh daemon running on the pi. https://winscp.net/eng/docs/introduction
  15. I contacted Globeron via PM with that inquiry. I am fairly confident it is the fault of one of the local package handlers; I have had... Prior experience... with dropped packages. (My large format printer took me 3 months of repairs to get working, after being "OOPSIE!"'d by the package people. Though that was UPS, not USPS.) Maybe I just have bad luck?? Despite the condition of the product, it should still be useful for the purpose I bought it for: Reverse engineering. Even in the battered and broken state, I can still reverse engineer it.
  16. Well..... My PEB arrived. I got it from the post office. DHL international was NOT kind in shipping. There is... Fairly substantive damage... let me get some pictures... I have not seen the insides yet... Not sure I want to. So-- Lesson learned, DO NOT SHIP INTERNATIONAL WITH DHL. They have butterfingers, and treat boxes marked fragile like they are basket balls.
  17. Hmmm... So, I have one of these. I have kinda done some "surgery" on it so that I can insert full-height felt-tip pens into it (because screw that noise with the proprietary pens you cannot buy.) It uses a serial interface, and speaks the HP GL graphics language. It would be hilarious to get a TI to print a PDF by parsing the PS code in the PDF into HP GL curves, and send them to the plotter.
  18. So, the post office just cant be bothered to *FREAKING KNOCK*, and assert (WRONGLY!!) that I was not home, for failing to deliver my PEB. At least the post office is like-- A BLOCK away. I will get it after work-- but still, WTF USPS, WTF.
  19. I've read his stuff-- Also, his views on what constitutes madness are... Amusing. I am sure the man would have found me quite mad. Really, his protagonists would have been screaming and swinging from chandeliers after just a few hours at the DMV. I can only imagine what his reaction to something like 4-chan (or the internet in general) would have been.
  20. Yes. Much colder on Titan. Cryogenic cold temperatures there. As for me.. It's that fabulous time of year again, where I must endure the sloth-like narration speed and saccharine tonality of the Relias Learning online training narrators once more. (warning: It's really awful.) No, you don't to skip ahead, skip the narration, "just do the damn test and escape with your braincells intact", NO-- It's designed to be as horrible as possible. I have 12 whole units to do before Dec 31. In the past, I have been motivated to hack the training program to make the videos skippable. However, they (the modules) are all some motley mix of inconsistently written horrorshows that takes more mental fortitude to devise hacking methods for than I care to invest. Clearly relias outsourced the web development to the lowest bidder several times, and got vastly inconsistent results. Some are even broken, (I have had to "fix" them with the debugging console in the browser just to be in compliance, because they contain typos in the asset tags, and unless the asset properly loads, it wont let you progress, and you wont be in compliance. This is some dystopian shit here.) I get to go through this "Mandatory training" regimen every 6 months, and it is NEVER pleasurable NOR is it rewarding in any capacity. >.< Errrg I hate this stuff so much.
  21. I'm starting to see a lot of fish men...
  22. As I recall, the Hunt the Wumpus cartridge contains several regionalisations inside it. This was mentioned on a youtube video I saw for xload, since the program only initiates the first entry in a multi-program cartridge image. (which in the case of hunt the wumpus, is the german localization.) Sorry to year about your keyboard though.
  23. Other than being a pizza box, (and using a VERY old SCSI wide cable type), that could be used in modern setups with some work. You just need an HBA with a suitable external SCSI chain port on the back, A terminator, and an adapter. It will be slow as hell, (vintage tech you see), but if you don't care about that and just want to jam a bunch of disks into a box, it would totally work, even today.
  24. Omega, you can set whatever win32 application you want to be the "Shell" for windows. You just need to set a registry key, and bob's your uncle. http://georgechetcuti.com/windows/tweaks/changing-the-default-windows-shell-in-windows-7/ *the same key works for XP Basically, just point that key at classic99 and see what happens.
