  1. Would it be terribly uncouth to put my own "what was this game" request in this forum/topic? If it's uncool to put it here, just let me know and I'll EDIT this post. Thanks. I'm afraid that I might be mixing up Asteroids II, Cosmic Chasm and a Pink Floyd Laser Light show that I once saw, but... I think there was a coin op game wher after you die, this giant (green?) alien head shows up and laughs at you. I think it was a vector game and it was the leader of the baddies and said something like 'ha, ha, you puny human you'll never stop us' or whatever. Any idea what game that was? ><>RedBeard /* ON THE CURRENT TOPIC: I don't know what game you're talking about, but I wonder if it was, maybe, a NeoGeo or something. Perhaps it was not "just" a stand-up, coin-op, dedicated, single game? (Then there's no telling Who did What with the upper graphics & cabinet, could just been someone local puting thier own graphics/fonts.) Just an little idea... */
  2. Not applicable. I was never good enough to get a high score; too lame, really. Very sad. ><>RedBeard /* Except on home computers, when the scores were all mine. Then ACK */
  3. I guess I didn't think of the stock EeePC with its Linux based operating system would let you update or install packages. Various screenshots that I have seen make it look self contained / un-modifiable. Or is installing Atari done only *after* you've installed another OS, e.g. Debian? I guess it could be like a small 800XL laptop if you wanted, huh? ><>RedBeard /* TO CLARIFY: I am not in the 'dope - smoking scene' that I spoke about. I'm just saying that it exists around here. I ain't sayin' if I agree or disagree or anything, I'm just sayin'...it exists. B33tle: Your English looks fine. The phrase "you should see" sounds very 'native speaker' to me. Perhaps it translates directly in German, as well? And, no I am not Redb3ard. That's pretty funny, though: how many red bearded atari fans are there? Two (or more) apparently...Crazy! */
  4. The new pictures look great! And we can see the cassette drive too! ><>RedBeard /* Say 'hi' to Sophie for me. God Bless You and Happy Independence Day! */
  5. I second this. My thanks to you, sir. (And the rest of you out there. God Bless You. and thanks...) This all sound a bit more complicated than hooking up a disk drive, but worth the effort. Is all this explained in a(n) FAQ somewhere? I am partial to the 'I just want to do it the old-school way' attitude. But I bet several of you have 'been there and done that' and are trying to help the newbies, eh? ><>RedBeard /* MAYBE *and this is the right topic/forum, perhaps* it is time for the Atari and Commodore people to join up. Don't tell me that I'm the only one who wished that Commodore and Atari would have joined forces against Macintosh and IBM pc's. Somehow... in the last months before folding... in the darkest hours... in the depths of death throes... with all the spilt blood and bad feelings, Commodore and Atari joined together to wrest 2nd place from Apple. Then leaving the Macintosh in the dust bin of history. OS9, OSX. NEXT and all. Trumped by MINT/[workbench/whatever]. Anyways, there are some of us and some of them. Maybe some BBSing and gameING would be cool at this stage. Kind of bringing us together (oh, and the TI/994A folks, too) for one last hurrah or something...oh wishful thinking... */
  6. That is awesome. (In a nerd/geek kind of way.) I wonder, though, how many BBS's can the small Atari Scene support? What are there? Twenty five of you/us left? ><>RedBeard /* Yeah, I've had a CompuServe and a GE*nie account in my day... yikes... how old am I? */

[Edit: Regarding Mitch / 7800 Guy:] Now I am totally confused. ><>RedBeard /* Yeah. Like that's the first time I'm toatally confused. */
  8. LMAO! ><>RedBeard /* Yeah, it must be *terrible* to work in the pr0n industry, huh? (I'm in 'printing', but not that kind of printing.) */
  9. Wow. I never knew there were quite so many Linux ppl on here. (Is it okay if I say 'Linux Nerds'? I don't mean it in a bad way, but a good, computer-ese kind of way.) The next time I need Linux help, I will come here. B33tle: thanks for giving me a l33t spelling. I am honored. It must be nice to have an "Atari scene". My town is rather small and there aren't many 'scenes' at all unless you call dope-smoking a scene. ><>RedBeard /* B33tle: When you use phrases like, 'you should see', you sound like a native U.S. English speaker. Are you? I see you are in Deutschland, but you must have spent some time here; no? I lived in Germany when I was very young, but don't speak the language. */
  10. Seems you have a bit of NES / SNES, eh? Y'know, I think I actually reached (but didn't beat) Mike Tyson in "Punch Out". One of the rare games that I played nearly to the end. ><>RedBeard /* Methinks I should keep an eye on the chuckwagon in the future... */
  11. 1) I think mostly I have only run across machines where there was either burn-in or just *bad color* on the monitor. I've also played a few well maintained pinballs, and that is a real pleasure. B) Laundromats seem like especially dust (read 'lint'y) places. I guess I'm not surprised that a machine would be messed up at one of them. ><>RedBeard /* No offense to anyone else, but S1500, I LOVE the picture (avatar?). Long live Bill Cosby...er I mean TI! */
  12. I absolutely love Popeye. (Maybe I will marry it.) (wait... IF (already married) THEN ! (can_get_married) nevermind...) I really enjoyed Kangaroo (back in the day), one of the Atari brand arcade machines, it was, too. I was going to suggest Burger Time. No jumping, but lots of platforms and ladders. ><>RedBeard /* Pitfall, perhaps? */
  13. INDY 500?! I second that nomination. I almost forgot that game, but, wow, what a game. With options for driving on ice and such, too, if I recall corectly. ><>RedBeard /* I never was much of a Combat fan, but Mario Bros. is definitely a great co-op game. */
  14. This is a great little topic! I am so glad that several Atari folks are already using the eeePC. I really wanted one, but they are about $100 more than they were supposed to be. Also the fact that we're *very* cash poor right now; maybe I'll get one later, we shall see. ><>RedBeard /* Are those flash based hard drives really big enough to load much software? I mean more that just surfing around a playing a few games? */
  15. You said it. As if magazines (and other media) didn't already give a twisted view of female humans, add in the fact that everything is 'photoshopped' (edited) and no woman will ever live up to "the picture" in some guy's mind. Now mostly I am a prude, but I have seen 'sepia' and 'black and white' nudie pics and at least I believe that the woman *actually* looked like that. ><>RedBeard /* I was going to add "What Kids!? Kids aren't hanging around an Atari forum. Ninety-five percent of them don't know the word Atari." Then I realized that at least one is around here, Sean39's daughter, so there are probably more. Oh, yeah, also: I would definitely move that monitor up on a stand or something...she's gonna strain her neck if she sits and stares at it for very long. Very bad for the posture. :-) */
  16. Excellent pictures. Wonderful. I don't know if the surge protector is vintage, but then maybe it is. Anyways, lighting and all, I enjoyed them. I wish that I had a litte Atari nook like that. ><>RedBeard /* Of course, my Atari nook would be messier, cartridges lying around and such. :-) */
  17. Regarding the disk drive, B&C have some reconditioned ones for about $100: "HDA007 DRIVE 1050 DISK DRIVE recon 95.00" if you're interested. These are the 800XL sytle drives, though, they won't match the style /colors of the 130XE. They should work, just the same. They're at www.myatari.com. I've met them several times; nice folks. Anyway, keep looking, you'll find something for the right price. ><>RedBeard /* By the way, there are several Atari programming books at www.atariarchives.com for free (online) including BASIC programming and Assembly programming, possibly some others too */
  18. Is that Bill Gates? Yikes! *insert your own "floppy" joke here * ><>RedBeard /* Shame on me, I know. But what about the rest of those pics? I wanna see some NLQ action, maybe 32 power supplies tangled in a lump under the desk. */
  19. I love the "Powered By Dell" at the top. I'm crackin' up. ><>RedBeard /* Hey, I love this whole topic. This is classic stuph! Sean, God Bless you, brother! */
  20. "Very simple, don't use Vista." - UNIXcoffee928 Hahaha. I laugh. (Seriously, though, I'm sure you know VISTA what you get if you need cheap, new hardware "off the shelf", so ...) "...you can always use the free MS VirtualPC with a legacy OS." - Tezz Can you give the quick "once over" on this? Download/install from Microsoft, then find an old copy of, say, Win ME that will run in a window inside Windows Vista? Forgive my ignorance, please. ><>RedBeard /* By the way, don't forget to check the h patch. */

I found this, though, I'm not sure if they mean the ROM or what since they keep using "BIOS". Okay, I got some BIOSes and images, now where do I put them? BIOSes should go, still zipped, in the roms subfolder of wherever you put MESS (create it if it doesn't exist). Game images can go anywhere, although by default the GUI will look in the software\[system name] subfolder of your MESS folder. They can still be zipped, but for command-line MESS there can only be one image per zip file (MESSUI supports multiple images per zip file). I hope that helps a bit. I haven't used MESS or MAME for a long time, though. ><>RedBeard /* I believe the official site is "mess dot org" */
  22. Thanks, StefanD. I didn't notice that menu item before. I shall try it. Also, I thought maybe I could use v4.1 when I need to "ENTER H6:file.txt", then 'save' it or use 'save state' then reopen it in v4.0. to work with it. A long way 'round, but should work. ><>RedBeard /* Oh, I did try 4.1 with my Windows XP machine and the high pitch squeal is gone, but the sound is still wonky and the 'paused please press F9' thing is still corrupted. Oh well. */
  23. Alright. Next update. I found v3.1, but it doesn't work either. It does not 'ENTER "H6:file.txt" correctly, same problem that I have with 4.0. *AND* it does not have the key click noise that I love so much. Worst of both worlds. A screenshot below, but I don't know what PCX fiel is ,exactly. That is what Atari800Win 3.1 gave me, no .PNG option, either. ><>RedBeard /* I wonder if 4.1 would run properly on my Win XP machine... Vista is starting to bug me. The darn Help File doesn't even work anymore. Can you believe they 'officially' don't support the old help system!? Yeah, who would want to access 10 years worth of help files? Let's just throw backward compatibility down the toilet. Argh! im not getting frustrated.im not geting frustrated.im not getting frustrated */
  24. Aw, Kr0tki, you are The Man! Unfortunately my computer isn't the man, and so and refuses to comply. Basically 4.1 had two problems for me: A) a high pitched noise any time the window was active (except when navigating the various ">Menu >Items")... and 2) some weird display problems, characters not being correct (see 'paused...continue' in the screenshot). I did quit and restart the emu. I also rebooted my entire machine just in case. Any chance someone around here has a Version 3.*something* that is stable? All I could find was 2.7 and it didn't have sound for me. What do people around here use? I wonder. In my mind I guess I thought everyone had v4.0 or something. ><>RedBeard /* Running on Compaq Windows Vista, so that may/may-not be the problem. */ /* Edit: The loading of the 'H6:file.txt' sample file worked wonderfully though! */
  25. OOOOkay, then. Attached is a screenshot of what is happening to me. Sorry for the delay. You can see here that I "NEW"ed ("nude"! Oh my.) then tried to pull in a simple 3 line program. Lines 20 and 30 ERRORed out immediately. Line 10 (just a REM) may be alright, but what is that inverse video garbage at the end? Of course running it ERRORed out, too. Error number 17 at line 20, in fact ><>RedBeard /* Does the screenshot go in as 'Insert Special Item' or 'Attachment>Select a file'? Oh, well, here goes... */
