  1. Thank you. Thank you. ><>RedBeard /* Oh, and thank you. */ /* Well, an update: It is true that I forgot to check the 'H Patch' option in >Atari >Options. However, it still doesn't work properly for me. (I have a topic over in the Emulation topic ('pasting the buffer?') right now about this.) Essentially, I get ERRORs in between every line number and its statement. I got the chance to try v4.1, but it makes a high pitched squeal. So that's a 'no go' unless I can fix it. Anyhoo, looks like I'll be doing a lot of typing right there in the emulator. Just like the olden days. */
  2. Well, I tried it on a different machine, but now I'm back to ERROR- 130'ing. Oy. ><>RedBeard /* On the bright side, I got one of the Machine Language For Beginners programs to work! */

I, too, would try it under another emu. I tried MESS a while ago, and wasn't satisfied. It is a great idea for a program. And I am sure that it has come a long way since I last tried it, but it didn't work out well for me. ><>RedBeard /* These are computers, after all, and all it takes sometimes is a ONE where a ZERO should be, and you get quite unexpected results. */
  4. Thank you so much, Kr0tki. I almost have it working now...almost When I "ENTER "H6:FILE2.TXT" or "ENTER "H6:FILE2.LST", it gives me this: 10 REM THIS IS A LINE 20 ERROR-[3 spaces] ? "HERE IS ANOTHER LINE" 30 ERROR-[3 spaces] END It almost looks like it leaves traces of [carriage return][line feed] and errors out. (There are little blocks on the screen, almost like the old [CTRL] characters. I tried Notepad first when this happened. So I tried Crimson Editor and got the same results. Maybe I need to find good old Vi ?! ><>RedBeard /* This is not a comment. */
  5. As to the "bad data" error, it was probably O ("oh") instead of 0 (zero). I did catch myself doing that on one of the lines. The chances are, I did it on another line, I suppose. I have since erased it, so I cannot say. I am looking forward to trying more of the exercises. But I'd sure rather copy/paste them next time! ><>RedBeard /* It's too bad I must go to a real job during the daytime. I'd rather figure all this out; much more fun! */
  6. Thanks. Apparently I am an moron, however. I cannot get the "file.txt" into the emulator. I keep getting ERROR- 130, which means it can't find the drive, I guess. I've tried file.txt and FILE.TXT and FILE2.BAS etc. but still can't make it work. I have H1 set as C:\Atari\HDISK. The setting under that says H1:>DOS;>DOS. (I don't know what that means.) I think I tried with and without DOS in drive 1. If I may be so bold as to ask that you guide me throught the proper steps to make this work. I would sure love to save myself all that typing. (And all those typos!) ><>RedBeard /* Thanks for your patience. Hopefully others will benefit from this, too. */
  7. Aha! Color me embarrassed. I need to have an 8 bit mindset. Somehow I keep thinking as if every machine has a hard drive and a floppy drive and boots ready for CD reading and USB saving. The 8 bit scene is different. The machines and periferals are more like hand tools that you need to use one at a time, carefully, in order to craft your project. ><>RedBeard /* I'm a'gonna go try it now. */
  8. I don't know if it is part of a bigger program, but I don't think so. It comes directly from Machine Language For Beginners. I thought the book said it would fill the screen with characters just to show off the amazing speed of assembly over BASIC. Like a Chapter 1 demonstration before we get into the meat of the book. Did it do anything like that? For me it either crashed the emu or errored out. Thats it. ><>RedBeard /* Maybe I mistyped it. Is there a way to get something copied and pasted from the web into Atari800 WinPlus? */
  9. Hey, yous. As I have stated before, I'm trying to do some of the book exercises from atariarchives_dot_org. Well, for some reason I cannot even get two of the first/easiest ones to work. The first one was from Creating Adventure Games On Your PC. (Didn't work...I figured the ERROR was me...) The other is this one: 100 FOR I=1536 TO 1561:READ A:POKE I,A:NEXT I 110 PRINT "A=USR(1536) TO ACTIVATE " 120 DATA 165,88,133,0,165,89,133,1,169 130 DATA 33,162,4,160,0,145,0,200,208,251,230 140 DATA 1,202,208,244,104,96 from Machine Language For Beginners. Basically, it refuses to read in the data. I keep getting errors at "READ A", even if I split that code into several lines. I think 'Error- 8' is what it says. Now I haven't done any programming in *years*, but READ/DATA statments shouldn't be a problem, eh? Easy peasy. Or so I thought. ><>RedBeard /* Maybe an emulator thing? Maybe I mistyped the code? I don't know, but it's bed time! G'night, all! */
  10. Hey, thanks again bf2k+. Funny, though, when I boot with that one in the drive, I get this: Error: No DOS I tried "turning" the disk, in case it thought I was trying to read the B Side or something, but it didn't help. I'm afraid my ignorance is, once again, a stumbling block. Do I need some other setting? Hold down a key while booting? I'm at a loss. ><>RedBeard /* Wow! A 16 meg disk! That's like 11 (!) of those new fangled 3.5" floppies I heard about! */
  11. An 18meg ATR Image?! I didn't know such a thing was possible. I guess in my mind, I just assumed that an ATR was limited to the specs of the hardware back in the day. How can I find or create such a large image? I could use it then as a "pretend" hard drive, just that it sits on the floppy drive as far as the emu is concerned, eh? ><>RedBeard /* How do you navigate a drive that size? Using SpartaDOS or something? I don't remember DOS 2.5 having "cd .." or anything. */
  12. Rehowdies. When I am trying to work on type-in programs, some of them aren't in a useful form. How can I convert a text file (standard text, copied from website) into a useable Atari800 form? Is there a way to copy and paste directly into BASIC? Or convert a text file into a "FILE.BAS" listing? Or something else that I'm missing? ><>RedBeard /* Also, is there anything tricky I should know about emulating a Hard Drive while I'm at it? */
  13. Just a note to say that alibris.com has several used copies of Your Atari Computer. Looks like S/H charges might be more expensive that the book itself. ><>RedBeard /* Also, of course, you can POKE around (heh. "basic" nerd joke. [double points for the pun!]) atariarchives.com...several books there. */
  14. Well, sir, you've had 100+views, but no answers. Don't get your hopes up, I don't have one either. I just think it's very odd that one emu works and the other doesn't. Very odd. Let us know if you find out what's going on there. ><>RedBeard /* Darned computers! It's always something, eh? */
  15. Okay, another update. I posted a similar message in another forum and got answers. Here they are: http://www.atariage.com/forums/index.php?s...p;#entry1542594 Essentially, turn BASIC on in the >Atari >Options area. Then proceed as normal. ><>RedBeard /* Just in case you're reading this. */
  16. Thanks so much, you two! I really appreciate it. It appears that I had BASIC turned off (in >Atari >Options >Disable Basic) now it works. As I said, I'm trying to work through some of the books/programs at atariarchives_dot_org. I wanted to use the ATR disk images instead of do all the typing myself. Can you tell me why "turn off basic" is an option? When would I use it? Also (while I'm thinking of it) should I consider using the emulated hard drive? Is there anything tricky about it, etc.? ><>RedBeard /* Thank you. Thank you. Thank you again. */
  17. Howdys. I'm sorry if this is a sort of double post. The other one is in the Emulation topic, but this one may be the right spot. Essentially, I am ignorant/functionally-retarded of how to properly load and save (via LOAD "D:GAME.BAS" etc.). If I have the disk drive on then reboot, I get the DOS prompt. If I turn the drive on later, I get a 130 error. I am trying to work through some programming examples and need this functionality. anyhelp, much thanks... ><>RedBeard /* Here's my system: Atari800 WinPlus 4.0 emulating Atari XL w/ 128k - on Toshiba notebook running WinXP */
  18. Oops. Just in case it help: ~Atari800 WinPlus 4.0 ~emulating xl with 128k ~on Toshiba notebook with Windows XP ><>RedBeard /* Again, thanks in advance. */
  19. Hi, all. Can somebody give me a quick rundown on how to use disk drives in Atari800 WinPlus 4.0, please? My 8 bit days are long behind me and I never had a disk drive; mostly just played cartridges or used the casette. Now I am trying out some of the books/lessons over on atariarchives_dot_org. I would rather not type all of that code, so I downloaded the "atr" with the programs on it. If I boot with it in the drive, I get the DOS (2.5, methinks) screen, but can't load the game from there. It is saved as .BAS, so that's just a BASIC listing, right? So if I go to BASIC then try a "LOAD "D:GAME.BAS" I get and error 130. Basically, I am just functionally illiterate with Atari 8 bits (or emulators) and disk drives. Some baby steps / hand holding kind of advice would be appreciated. Help Please! ><>RedBeard /* Just, curious, does Atari800 do anything besides full-screen mode? Or is that really what Atari800WinPlus is for? */
  20. My opinion is that puppies are great, but kittens are just a wee bit cuter. ><>RedBeard /* Also, if the above two answers don't work out, I'd attack the FB2, as it is (probably) the cheapest & easiest to replace should anything go wrong. */
  21. Hiya. You can try clicking the "2600" link at the top of this page. Then scroll down and type "pac-man" into the search box. Several pac-x's will show up. I believe a rom copy is in the fifth (or so...) column. ><>RedBeard /* If you need a stand-up/coin-op rom, I can't help you with that. */
  22. Both of my kids play. They started with Noddys Playtime on the ST and a couple of NES carts we had. (Fast-forward through SNES and Jaguar...) Now he plays PS2 and Runescape and she plays Wii and Kingdom Hearts. ><>RedBeard /* Funny you should mention seeing the end of Halo [see above], as we (well, mostly he) finally finished Super Mario Brothers. I was never any good at it, but he and his friend just plowed right through it about a year ago. (Maybe we will track down the NES Mario Brothers ...that would be fun to finally complete.) */
  23. Like a few others, I think I voted 'no' too quickly. ---> "... Anything counts, from artwork to manufacturing to "additional programming". ..." Well, I worked for a small printing company in California where we made a few Lynx labels. So that kinda counts, huh? ><>RedBeard /* Also, if you ever had any Quicken or Quickbooks floppy disks, the odds are we printed those labels, too. */
  24. Atari2600land et al, you can check Amtrak tickets. I know there are trains from Salem up to Portland. The Coast Starlight (I think) runs from approx. Oakland, CA up through Sacramento, CA up through Eugene, OR up through Salem, OR up through Portland. I'm almost positive that it runs from much farther south (San Diego or L.A.) all the way up to the Canadian border. Anyhow, you'll need to find a way from the train station out toward the airport, but it's doable. ><>RedBeard /* I can't believe I just found this topic and there's a show coming soon! I feel all nervous and giddy like some lovesick schoolboy or something. */
  25. Thank you. Glad to know that I don't need to surround it with asm...end or anything. I'm sure it's Operator Error. The funny thing is, the examples are working if I use Crimson to make and save them then use DASM in command line to compile them. Then I navigate to Stella and use its menu to open the example. (I need to be careful that I add the ".asm" extensions and such, but it all seems to work.) The problem, I think, is in the file names and arguement passing. Crimson Editor does not automatically put any extensions as far as I can tell. (That's fine because it's used for so many kinds of programming, understood.) Then I try to send DASM a file_name.asm and it has a cow. The error log keeps telling me it dosn't understand a ";". [see below] And apparently if you send Stella a nonexistant file, it just gets all blinky and stupid looking, pretending to be running something. ---------- Capture Output ---------- > "C:\AtariVCS\bB\2600bas.bat" C:\AtariVCS\bB\kernel_L15 (1) Parse error: unrecognized character ";" 2600 Basic compilation complete. DASM V2.20.07, Macro Assembler ©1988-2003 bytes of ROM space left 2829 bytes of ROM space left Complete. > Terminated with exit code 0. So anyway, any help is appreciated. I am doing my 'baby steps', and closing in on the dream that has eluded me since 1982. (I actually played Atari in about 1979 at some friends - of - freinds' house, but by '82 I was totally hooked.) ><>RedBeard /* And somehow I have some file_name.asm.asm files floating around. Yikes! */
