All this wasted bandwidth because no one can understand the intent of the question? Ridiculous.

It's not about understanding, it is about encouraging people to think, before they type.  The internet is full of garbage sentences and people always say "Well, you know what I mean.".  That is the wrong approach and you will turn into a full on mouth breather over time.
