I like the ideas, I’m going to figure out a way to keep my seals from Microsoft intact and get started on this Xbox. I need to see what type of board I have to order some caps and see about a fan upgrade. I’m just scared to break it lol.

Being this is a crystal Xbox which has a ton of nostalgia factor since I could never afford one of these new. I’d like this one at its prime. I’ve just been making a list of items to update or restore to give this puppy another 20 years of strong life! I’ve watched a youtuber named “odd tinkering” restore one of these. When I picked this one up out of the shed I thought why not. Here’s a link to his video on an Xbox restoration. I’m just not sure how to get this yellowing out of the case. Or what thermal paste to use. I’m very new to this and haven’t even cracked the console open yet to see what board I have. I’m just in the process of deciding what to do and what I need to order parts wise to make this thing a tank. I will look up blainelocklair on Atari Age forums for some more ideas.

Needs a capacitor update it seems

BUMP- I’m just looking to see if anyone’s done this kinda restoration to an original Xbox.

I’ll swap the drive in from my cracked case one (the drive works fine in this console), I’m looking to make this thing reliable and better looking. The case seems to be somewhat yellowed. I also wanted to change the caps if need be and thermal paste on the CPU and GPU. Should I do these things? Any other suggestions for looks and reliability.

I’ve read online that you can just swap the drives. The main reason I asked this is because I believe the board in the crystal Xbox is 1.6 or 1.6b variation and thought it be the best board to keep in the crystal Xbox. The guy who gave me the Xbox told me it was outside in a shed for 8 years. Luckily it still turns on and works normally it seems besides not reading discs. Is it really as easy as just a drive swap? No daughter board to swap over with it? Just looking for advice. This thing was in a shed for 8 years and looks a bit crusty. I thought it be really cool to somehow restore this Gem, new caps, new thermal paste, drive swap (from my other Xbox), swap the RF shields due to rust, somehow de-yellow the case ect. Thoughts?

Was given a Crystal original Xbox for free, disc drive doesn’t read games. What should I do with it? I happen to have a crack case black console.

I’ve checked continuity from where the ports pins solder onto to motherboard back to these holes and then back to the chip. As suggested I lead these pins back to the 90s legs on the chip this is very hard with the equipment I have but I did get continuity for all these holes. These connect to the third pin on each of the resistors legs.

Well I guess maybe I should stop well I’m ahead since at least number 1 port works. I feel I’ve been had by the seller who sold this to me for 15 dollars Canadian but I did get the PSU and tv RF cable. I was told it only had an issue with the power port which was an easy fix. I am willing to basically use this as a learning experience so if theirs any other chips I can try to change that may be a fun project. Which other chips besides the main have anything to do with the second controller port?

The stickiness was on the bottom of the board so maby it’s normal after all to be sticky. Do you fee there is anything I can if it’s a chip issue? Short of actually trying to change it to a new one?

I checked the pins from where the controller plugs into to the third pin of the resistors behind them. I’ve checked over the whole board and looked for damaged but can’t find any traces that are not functional. I don’t know how to read schematics, is there anything specific I should look for as to why just the second slot doesn’t work. I googled the “CMK” logo and couldn’t find any information on that either. I did not see any damage whatsoever on the board. Another thing to note that entire board feels and looks like a can of Soda was spilled and left to dry on it, it also has this weird stickiness you can’t seem to get off. It couldn’t be my solder work because the first controller always worked and it still does after all my attempts to resolve the issue.

I was thinking of the idea of soldering all the pins from the controller port to their respective resistors via small wires. I may just be hacking it up worse, since I know they all have continuity. I’m just not going to give up till I know it’s not salvageable.

I reflowed all joints on the entire back of the board and it didn’t help, I fear the worst but hope for the best.

I took your suggestion and tried each pin to where they solder and no issues found. I did find one trace that didn’t make a good connection to one of the resistors and fixed that. Still doesn’t work. It’s weird because the board is in such good shape. I even have a second Sega Genesis I took apart to compare and can’t find anything different between the two. Any suggestions you have are appreciated.

I tested continuity between the pins and the resistors above them and I can’t seem to find any that are broken. Which pins would make the entire port not work if they were broken?

I figured out by trial and error that sonic 3 and 2 the d pad and start button are responsive. I wonder how this could be when none of the buttons work on other games.

I’m having a weird issue with my Genesis model 2 where only controller port two doesn’t work. On one game specifically “Thomas the tank engine and friends”,I don’t get any controller action from either side. I’ve desoldered and soldered them back on a couple times but to no avail. Here are some picks hopefully someone can help me bring this puppy back to life.

I see colour for a second on my LG tv but then it goes black and white and stays black and white. It also has lines going up and down the screen. The sounds seems perfectly fine. I was about to take the RF shielding off inside the console and go to soldering lol good thing MR. said something before it was too late about trying another tv! My advice to anyone with these consoles is to try multiple TVs with this when having this issue.- 40 replies
