Right, and even if two platforms were released in the same year they can give completely different aesthetics. I do think this continued through to the late 1990s, it just became less and less prominent as you described.

What console do you think killed it?

I think the Dreamcast but the spirit of each console having different looking graphics continued with portable consoles up into the early 2010's imo

"new software on old hardware" is still M2's Fantasy Zone II DX - which set an unbelievably high bar and gets very little recognition for it.

Oh my gosh I freaking knew you've played this game and it was an inspiration!

    You’re so   sober...

    ... You’re aware your company has released a title for a home-console

... 30 years (!!!)  after its official discontinuation...?

    Its a smash-hit.

From what I've seen and read he made the game to have the polish of a normal "pixel art Indie game" and was hoping most of the sales would be from the steam and humble bundle versions (bought by people who don't really care too much for older consoles, but the demographic of people who play indie games), but what ended up happening is us nerds ended up showing it to our friends as "a super cool Atari 7800 game" rather then a "super cool indie game" like how he was intending.

I'm also guessing his profit of the game wasn't as much as he was anticipating, (because of the small player base the console has).

What I am trying to say is you're right in saying it's a "smash hit" but not in the way it was set up to be.

  4. I actually got the steam version of Rikki & Vikki and feel in love with it, but didn't love the input lag (it wasn't too bad, I'm just sensitive to that kind of stuff and wanted a reason to get a 7800) so I bought one, then got that one custom controller that looked like an nes controller, then got a 2nd one, plus the 7800 itself, and the game. I ended up spending 300+ just for me to be able to play 1 game in the definitive way.. Worth it!

  5. One of the main reasons I got an Atari 7800 was for Rikki & Vikki, all together playing Rikki on the 7800, plus the controller and the 7800 itself, it came to $230ish.

    Worth it

  6. I own a model 1 Fairchild VES and need to replace the power supply very soon, it's making very loud humming noises when I have it plugged in for too long and don't want to start a house fire.
I was going to find a power supply with the same voltages and what ever and chop off the original power supply (reminder that everything was hardwired on the original system) then if I can figure it out put the new internals in the old power supply box because it looks cool and I would feel bad throwing it away.

    Any reason why I shouldn't?

And or does anyone know of any quirks I should be aware of? (I've barely done any type of repair work on my systems, so I'm new to this.)

I bought three PCBs (blank boards) as I was out of them and someone wanted (and paid for - thanks) a cart.

Got the PCBs yesterday and they hadn't drilled all holes... So I'm expecting new ones in about two weeks, then I can set you up.

Mostly trying to finish Tetris but there has been other problems at the moment due to the new coronavirus - don't know if you've heard about it.  ;) :D

Send me a message (or payment to reserve one).

Sounds great, I just got a Channel F and I'm excited to get some games to play on it, you can only play pong so many times lol, I'll be waiting.

Also I'll get to paying you on Monday when I get my paycheck. Thank you for being super cool!

  8. (I'm just going to lazily quote my status update)

The power supply on my Fairchild Channel F is buzzing and I can feel it vibrating, I think it's time for me to figure out how to replace it, I was thinking of chopping it off and getting a new power supply that uses the same amps and volts that the Channel F uses, but I'm super new to repairing things, anyone see any problem with me doing that? (just an FYI, my Channel F isn't in the greatest cosmetic condition so it's not that big of a deal if I mod it in my eyes because no matter what, it's never going to be museum worthy haha)

if I can I am going to keep the box the power supply was in because it looks super neat, but if I can't then I'll just have it sitting around until I can figure out how to scoop out the internals with out hurting myself.

  9. Strangest thing just happened, I plugged in the 7800 to my Lcd TV and it's fine on that tv, here's my Timex Sinclair 1000 on the same tv using the same cable

Huh, looks like the horizontal sync is spazzing out. RF is composite with more junk in the signal, so the differences you're seeing are likely from the leveling in the composite mods or in the television itself.

I've actually tested another thing with RF and it worked fine, if you saw it in motion it doesn't look like the V sync is out of wack, it looks too digital for it to be that, but who knows. I've talked to CrossBow about this and he thinks it's the chip that communicates with the RF modulator, but who knows lol.

Also, didn't know about the composite thing, that makes sense because of how allot of the same quirks exist with RF.

  11. Sadly my 7800 is acting up but I think my RF signal looks better then most composite signals imo

  12. Woah, that is really cool looking, bad ground connection is my guess? I'm not that knowledged on stuff like that but I've seen videos of signal interference with that for the reasoning

For Ballblazer, the 7800 is probably my favorite. The 5200 is near identical but a little blockier.

If I remember correctly, the 7800 version of Ballblazer runs at 60fps rather then the 5200 version which runs at 15 or 30.
