  1. I immigrated from Russia, at age 20/in Sept1992, prior to that my genius classmate (we were known in 1000+ pupils schol, as the only 2 or perhaps 5 "hardcore Electronics/computers kids"), built a slide-on modem, slides onto telephone handset & makes sounds i.e. AUDIO/thru AIR(no electrical/wire connection), obvioulsy exceedingly prone to noise/very low datarate but he was getting standard 300bps, if memory serves.. anyways, so on 24Sept1992 parents & I land in NewYork NY & you mgiht guess, my kiddie first priority was to get ANY loan/any source of money to buy some computer from PC Richards & Son on sale, it was my favortire IBm PS/2 running on Intel i486-SX2 (remember I was a student/immigrant, no job yet & my parents were spending several months to get "plugged" into society also, so I used part of college loan) It had already built-in 2400bps Hayes. I sold it (on Usenet/Newsgroups, no Ebay/WebForums in 1993 !) & promptly spent my pitiful remaining money on a Hayes 14.4Kbps (which several year slater replaced w/56Kbps again Hayes). I typ,. went w/large epxensive pioneering "corporate-dominance" mfg's, instead of smaller/cheaper competitors, for RELIABILITY rather than flaky performance edge. So it was strictly IBM (real/genuine, not clones) for computers & Hayes for modems for me Those days & mfg's of course passed away in following decade(s) (though Lenovo inherited IBM's personal.computing division) Then at 56Kbps we got stuck for years - nothing would break that barrier, except for unreliable/experimenal stuff & DSL which I didn't want to bother with, then I jumped directly to Cable."modem" (CableTV doesNOT use a "modem" per se but the erroneous hardware "name" became too common to fight it, akin to DB9 connector which properly should be called DE9... whatever!). So it was HAYES And ONLY Internal.... I never understood the hassle of an external type, some people elected to own And my modems were always 200% rock-solid/reliable/not a single failure... Hayes.
