  1. I just assumed that hold select+start on boot was test screen for AFB9s. It is for the X and a lot of other AFBs. So my bad on that. I was wrong.

I remember WD Gaster saying something about a blank channel text file to get into the LFB test screen over at the GBATemp forum now that I think about it.

I think the full firmware Update image above will work. Im suprised it wont flash from the SD Card now. Those Android tool drivers can be a PITA, BTW.

  2. There was a full AFB9 dump around here somewhere, I dont remember if it was regular or gold version though.

The 2nd (60+ MB) file up there is the FULL Update image, not system dump btw.

I do have the android tools and drivers if you end up needing them.

EDIT: Well, shit, here they are in case Im not around.

  3. i read the comments a little bit on the video you shared. People had trouble with the fix on AFB9Gold because of the wireless joysticks. I guess you have to use a wired one to fix it. The problem they ran into was they couldn't exit the pitfall test game.

To exit a game with a joystick that doesnt have the "menu" button like the atgames P1 joystick, hold SELECT button on the console and press down on the joystick to exit. (or maybe its Select+Up, I always forget which is manual rewind and which is manual menu/exit)

BTW, it looks like the GBATemp guys used android tools to push a full image onto that sega flashback and got it working.

    Good luck, let us know!

  4. Ok so, that channel file and rom-05cb.bin file I have never seen before. I also know opening up the system and holding the little reset button and powering on into safe mode doesn't really help anything.

Here is another website talking about it:
At @ames sega mega drive red screen | GBAtemp.net - The Independent Video Game Community

@rocketfan, what do you think??? Any ideas?

Other options would be to email atgames, they are helpful in my experience. That had to be where those files came from.

Here is the FULL update. (these updates need to be names "atari_update.img" for the system to see them.

  5. can you show me the youtube video and the link, please.

So, you get into the test screen normally by powering on the system while holding start+select. Are those buttons stuck down?

Have you tried loading the official firmware update on an SD Card and tried to re-flash the system?

Here is the Atari Flashback 9 Gold Firmware Update V.2.1.1

  6. use what?

You asked for an obsolete file. If youre trying to set up a7800 games without the nexus pack, youre going to have a hard time. There are all kinds of other files needed to make those games work.

Just put the entire NEXUS V.1.0.1 pack on an SD Card.

  7. Yes same person, CaliPower. I was there while they were filming the Bang The Machine documentary.

Sadly, it was lost at ground zero on 9/11. Here is the story behind that. The movie survived but the masters were lost. The version that survived has copywritten music mixed into it that they can't really remove. Because of that, it can't be shown in theatres. So, it has been shown at the sundance film festival and they used to show it at EVO tournaments. Not sure if thats still a thing tho.

it seems like just yesterday. Look how young everyone is! :)

  8. No records, I can tell you that people watched me beat UMK3 with cyber smoke and used that to set the world record. It kind of made me upset when I saw it, because the person that set it was watching me very intently when I was playing.

it doesnt matter much because someone from Brazil smashed the time with completely different tactics.

Im not really into scores and times, more into tournaments. I do have a ton of stories.

One of my favorites was E3 1999. I was spending the night at alex valle's house and there were a ton of players playing MVC2 on a jamma setup on the living room TV and they had a SFII arcade cabinet in the kitchen. Alex's parents didn't seem to mind, his dad was wearing a SF Jacket that Alex had won at a tournament. I remember thinking, no wonder he is good, my parents would flip out if people from all over the nation were crashing at our house and playing arcade games all night.

I was there for the tekken tag tournament tournament on PS2. It was 3 days long and hundreds of people. I made top ten. Im from Illionois, the other nine people were from the west coast. I played Ogre and True Ogre (and a little Gun-Jack).

  9. Yeah, for most of my "career" the adrenaline rush was fun, time slowing and tunnel vision as well.

I don't really get those feelings anymore. Turns out they eventually go away. I've been doing this for around 25 years.

In that tournament match you watched, I lost badly round 1. I had to make many adjustments to win that. That was what was going through my mind. Adapting to the opponent's playstyle.

and for what it's worth MKII scorpion is a low tier character.

Anyway, the concepts I like most and probably would give it something relatively unique is to turn it into a mainstream tinkerer/hacker box -- even if that's just from a software standpoint rather than hardware (it's obviously not designed for hardware-modding). There are of course plenty of solutions to do that out there already, but to have a platform that guided that with a recognizable name behind it would be rather interesting.

This is exactly wtf I said w/o all the long school words.

  11. since you asked, here is some footage of me playing. its not neo geo related. I would have PMed you, but I cannot. I am player 2/Scorpion @24:00. Steve/Stephanie/16bits ass is talking about back in springfield Aladdin's Castle I would sell him fatality lists and stuff for five bucks. There is a FULL version of this tournament on GGA's channel but its hard to just find me.

  12. did someone just mention flashbacks?

the home arcade stuff is the future, but here buy the Legends Core or Legends Connect, its totally not a flashback. You can APL link a flashback to a Legends Arcade... but they dont wanna sell flashbacks, because the arcade stuff is the future. ??? WTF ??? The fucking legends arcade is a flashback itself, if you ask me. They didnt stop selling flashbacks, they stuck them in pucks and cheap ikea arcade cabinets and overpriced them. Oh yeah, you can still get that cheap ass namco blast unit, thats the future too, I guess. people loved the original bait and switch version of that.

So whats the clear direction for the Legends connect, to swap it into a pandoras box? Ya thats brilliant.

how bout you guys shelve that legends connect and that $150 Legends Core Max Flashback 2 and give us another real atari please. Put the legends connect in an atari branded case. This isnt rocket science. If you dont think it will sell well, sell it through your website in limited quantities.

Also, didnt tectoy just recently blow through all their AFBXs in Brazil at $115 USD each?

    exclusive??? Its on STEAM!!! LOL.

    okay, now im gone. lol.

Well, I’m glad the new atari has people like you to extract money from.

And it is telling you call it “new Atari”. Even you aren’t under any illusions there is any connection whatsoever between the organizations with the exception of some moldy IP that has bounced around for years.

when the fuck did i call it "new atari"? I said quote-unquote "real" atari, making fun of the people who think its not real. Of course its real, of course its the newest atari. you guys crack me up, im outta here, lol.

    You guys are strange.

  15. Bill is a good guy, you can bust his balls, but he is very knowledgeable.

It seems to me like his mind is stuck in salesman mode. I dont see much "gamer" going on there.

Like, Im saying, lets illegally add all the roms to this sucker, and he is saying, but atari doesnt own them, we cant sell them.

  16. bill, im not talking about selling licensed games.

I know they dont have them. Im saying add the emulator, you know, like how the LEGENDS FLASHBACK can play NES games from the SD CARD????

no, its not clear what you are saying, because you are talking about "other shit".

Still waiting to hear if you think PR1 PC is still the superior port, or did I enlighten you?

I’m offended by how the current Atari is pissing on my nostalgia by hawking underpowered PCs with the same old games I got for $1.99 for my phone. I’m offended with their sketchy ethics damaging the brand. I’m offended they are jumping on the blockchain bandwagon and pimping out the name that was so important to my childhood so they can separate a few greedy idiots from their money.

Oh man, they didnt make the new atari the way you wanted it to be? Dang, that's rough, you got it bad bud."

Here is a little newsflash. Blockchain isnt going anywhere. That shit is going to be in all the new games before you know it.

  18. Here is the deal, most people out there have only experienced the 2600 games. There is a whole other world of 8 bit stuff that is great. I understand that the XEGS and 5200 and home computers have similar stuff as each other, (even tho the computers have 100x more games than the XEGS and 5200 small ass library) but it is a lot different than the 2600 library.

Understand that Im not talking about a business model selling licensed games, Im talking about give us the ability to add our own roms with those emulators built in. Because, Im the gamer on the gaming side, Im not AtGames trying to sell Adventure II for the 27th time.

  19. I re read it. I wasnt saying atari should sell the shit, I said I want to set it up myself.

You said the 8bit stuff is the same as stuff on other consoles, there are 1000s of home computer games, like, past finder, that arent on 2600. So I do disagree.

And that PC Primal Rage port isnt the best version. Saturn is.

Bill, what gives? I dont think you like me. lol.

I've heard this emulation-centered approach and having the whole Atari library plan before. The problem is, Atari themselves has limited game holdings, so you're not going to see much more than what we've seen on Vault, Flashbacks, and Evercade (and it's a very well worn library at this point). On the Atari 8-bit side it's mostly the same stuff as on their other platforms. Most probably don't need or want multiple similar versions of the same games. It would be expensive and difficult for a variety of reasons for Atari to license content from third parties as well.

I think a different plan would have been needed for those reasons and others.

I wasnt trying to give the impression that i want to buy these digital games. I will build my own setup.

I disagree about 8bit stuff. there are 1000s of games. While true that home computers, XEGS and 5200 have a similar library, that library is quite different than the 2600 library most people are familiar with.

So while it doesn't directly affect you or your Atari collection, it does end up creating less value for the VCS in general, as the pool of developers/talent willing to work with them on creating content isn't as large is it could be otherwise.

As for your question about what would make it a "real" Atari system, the original pitch made it sound like it was going to be a great place for all of the homebrewers here on AA to go and create things. That had some merit on paper, but it soon became obvious that no one really knew what they were doing with the VCS. That and they completely misread the room on why people still make games for old systems. If they had some kind of unique "Atari 2600 Game Maker" for the VCS, then maybe it would hold some value in that regard, but really it still makes more sense, from my perspective, to get one of the various SD cart solutions for your old Atari hardware or buy carts direct from places like AA, than it does to buy an Obscure Indie Game Showcase machine with an Atari logo on it.

For that first part, you really make a good point and a lot of sense. You really made me stop and think. While Im being an asshole only worried about myself and "my atari collection" thinking it doesnt affect me, well, it actually does. Imma big mouth idiot. (thats always fun to learn, lol)

Getting homebrew on the VCS should be a priority, Ive talked about that with others before. missed opportunity. They could still try something, even if its just sell the homebrews that are already out there and give the creators a cut, it doesnt even have to be a game maker, although that would be cool.

What if the VCS played A2600, sears tele-games versions, 5200, 7800, Lynx, 8-bit computers, XEGS, Atari arcade games, the weird flashback 1 nes ports, all the other flashback originals, Atari BASIC, TURBO BASIC XL, the Antic and other magazine type in games, real and homebrew games, and had a media viewer and a jukebox and a karaoke machine, Odyssey 2, Intellivision, ColecoVision, etc, with box art and custom bezels per game, with original atari joysticks and paddles, that would be cool right...

well the AFBs do it right now. To be totally honest, Im not interested in the VCS one bit. Im interested in adding Atari ST and Jaguar games to the mix and having keyboard and controllers with more than one button support. and I need a more powerful computer and I want a kick ass Atari case on it. so guess what is cooler than the branded Pi 3 and 2 hyperkin trooper IIs.... That VCS. Sure there are better cheaper solutions, but, I want to build it into an Atari everyone thinks they hate, like the AFBs. Because Im an asshole.

I know, I know, the retron has newer stella and galagon, well so does the AFB, and we just got emulators running outside of retroarch. Nobody knows, because every thinks they already know. You can play Atari 8-bit prince of persia homebrew on it right now. As a "gamer" i would rather play that than centipede recharged, just my opinions. Prince of Persia is like a work of art, recharged series, while kinda nifty, is like geometry wars fucked missile command and had a baby.
