NGX: Disappointed...........with "gamers", not the system.
Arkhan replied to DaytonaUSA's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I did what any sensible gamer would do. I gave it the middle finger and played some Neo Geo on a real cabinet. -
You could also just get the Tosec or GoodMSX things. GoodMSX has like every MSX1 and 2 .ROM file... Except for Inferno.

Ultima Collecting -- I am in big trouble!
Arkhan replied to Albert's topic in Classic Computing Discussion
Have any of you played the NES version of Ultima Exodus through instead of the DOS one? I much prefer it. The graphics are unique, and you get some pretty cool tunes that aren't in the DOS one without the upgrade patches.. I've fancied remaking Ultima 2 numerous times, including putting more content into the game. I just might do it one of these days... I feel that Ultima 2 is such a great concept that never got the attention it deserved. Needs more dinosaurs. -

That coin and cleavage game was funny, but it was such a departure from Bards Tale. I like Ultima 2 more than 1 in some parts, and vice versa. Ultima 2 feels empty. A majority of the towns are just duds. It feels too distant most of the time. I do however, like the amount of exploration and time-travelling. It really adds to the game. I think had the dungeons been required, the game would've had more purpose. Maybe the tassle should have been an item in a tower or cave? That would've been useful. -
I thought it was stupid, honestly. I'm sure it'll be a hit with the iPhone crowd or something, though.

Yeah. That's why it weighs about 600 lbs. -

Speaking of Ultima 2, I Just played through it again. I basically just stole food, stole weapons and armor, and slaughtered everything, including the townsfolk. Too bad there isn't an alternate ending where the people of the world fear you more than Minax, and then you take over everything that's ever existed, ever. bwhahahahaha. Does anyone else actually explore the towers? I know alot of people just ignore them. -

I have an MSX Turbo R, with an R800 in it. That thing's stupid-fast. I like it.

Ultima Collecting -- I am in big trouble!

I just gave a spare copy of Ultima Exodus for NES to a coworker. He's getting used to the whole "You aren't hand held through this game like Final Fantasy" style. Hopefully he doesn't hate it. That Ultima collector book is scary. It should be called "How to never have money again" -
Dungeons of Daggorath - finally beaten, again!
Arkhan replied to Charlie_'s topic in Classic Computing Discussion
Already knew that. and yeah it's pretty awesome. I've been playing Ultima 1 for the MSX. It has music! Once you fumble past the japanese intro screens it's not too hard to play. It's basically a straight port. The tunes are pretty awesome. -
Nothing sucks as hard as getting the Axe in a level where most shit flies at you from the front. They put those axes in as a "hahahahahahah, you're an idiot!" feature. I swear.

I prefer Akalabeth, myself. But, this game was pretty cool as well. I dig the line-drawn artwork in those old games (Akalabeth, DoD, Ultima 1 and 2... ). They managed to make things look sinister with a bunch of frikkin' lines. This is like one of the only games I played on a TRS80 back during one of my "Play tons of old RPGs" kicks. -

I was so busy flailing around trying to get Inferno done that I forgot to check back on this thread lol. I entered the game yesterday for the compo. I only got one level done, but I think it turned out pretty good. I had alot of help from #msxdev since I am new to z80.

Any more details about Jeff Dailey's Berzerk death?
Arkhan replied to Dauber's topic in Arcade and Pinball
It was the 80s. There is only one cause. Cocaine. -
We took a field trip to the Nasa research center near my house when I was younger, and they did indeed use Amiga computers there. I remember seeing them and going COOL. Then I went home and tried to figure out why my Amiga 500 didn't have any of that crap on it.

I started with 6502 (C64 and then PC Engine/Turbo Grafx-16 and some Apple II). I then moved to Z80 with the MSX, and found that z80 is alot easier to work with, at least to me. I like the fancy-ass register setup more than the zero-page setup, and also find that there are alot of other neat instructions and things you can do with the z80 that the 6502 cannot. One of the things I like is that loads on the Z80 don't affect the flags. That was probably the biggest "!!!!!" moment when I switched to z80. The zero-page setup of 6502 gives me a headache, and so does the double indirect indirection to indirecty indirectness addressing mode.. The only 6502 I really enjoyed was the PC Engine because it's got some extra facilities in it that make it less of a headache. In the end though, neither is really absolutely better than the other. I've read various books and articles breaking down various points explaining how the 6502 could perform better because of how it pipelines instruction execution, and how the z80 could do better because it has real 16 bit registers and whatever else, but really, if you use either one as intended (or even close to being as intended), you're going to get about the same kind of performance, so the real thing that will matter is the video/sound chips that are involved, and even that will boil down to preference. If one were radically more powerful than the other, you wouldn't have double dragon on SMS and NES both play about the same with the only difference being the graphics and sound. Another example: People rant and rave about shoot em ups being great on the C64 but I think they all suck for the most part (Especially Lions of the Universe. aoifjsdfoijasdfoasf I hate that game). I can't think of any I really liked alot that weren't somewhere else, except for Parallax, if that even counts. It might be because I played all these games on NES/PCE/Sega Genesis/Amiga first, so the C64 ones are a bit bland in comparison... Side Arms sticks out there as one of the blandest. I also prefer music in the PCE games a bit more than everything else because I prefer that specific sound. You'll find other people who prefer SID tunes the same way. It doesn't really matter though. All them old machines are like boobs. All boobs are good. Just pick the ones you like fondling the most. I'm glad this thread has gone 5 pages so far without turning into a flamewar disaster. I was expecting chaos by page 3. Usually these discussions turn into people posting C64 demos while making fun of spectrum ones, and vice versa. With neither side realizing how stupid the argument has become.

Any way to find Cheap MSX Computers and Games?
Arkhan replied to segagamer99's topic in Classic Console Discussion
The MSX Forums (MSX.org) are home to some of the European resellers... lol Though, you are in Europe, so shipping doesn't cost as much I'd guess. Last time I bought an MSX from an MSX.org forum member, it was packed with newspaper for its overseas trip, and it arrived in pieces. -
The MSX2+ to me is a great gaming machine with cartridge and disk based games of all varieties. I also like C64, but mostly for the RPGs. The action games are always a bit dodgy, especially the arcade ports. So, my vote still goes MSX, as its got a wideeeeee variety of action/RPG/sports/driving/shooty games. and then, Turbo Grafx-16 + CD. RPGs, action, rpgs.... in CD and card form. glory.

I think the Japanese just don't realize it and are gauging it based off the crap they see. that, or the japanese resellers aren't really japanese, but say they are. -

Celga's customer service is unparalleled though. I prefer them always because of that. and the reason MSX prices on ebay suck is because of a European reseller that imports and than 2x/3xs the price of everything.
