Just picked up another Model 1 Japanese Mega Drive. This time, it's a VA5. Which, is arguably one of the most desirable motherboard revisions along with the VA4. They both fixed the dreaded pre-amp issue with the VA0, VA1 and VA2 all while maintaining an excellent frequency curve. The balance between mids, highs and lows is fantastic, and sounds even better with headphones on.
Additionally, this one was modded with your standard "region free" switch mod, allowing me to play essentially every Mega Drive/Genesis game in existence, including the 50hz ones (as long as the TV/monitor can display 50hz, which isn't a guarantee over here in the USA. Most can, though).
The cherry on top is that it appears to have the least amount of analog noise out of all 3 of my consoles, which is absolutely not something you can really control or predict. So that's fantastic to see.
All in all, couldn't be any happier with it. Best $60 I've spent in a long time.

The first one I ever bought was a VA4. Walked into a store, flipped it over to get a date estimate, bought it, took it home, opened it, and saw the VA4 on the motherboard. Bought a few others (and a Japanese 60GB PS3 and a Framemeister) from a friend who was getting rid of all of his consoles, but the other Mega Drives aren't as good as my original VA4.
Mega Jet completely outclasses the VA4 in literally every way, though. If you ever see one, buy it without hesitation.

I always thought the Sega Genesis Mega Drive box inserts were beautiful. I mean, true masterpieces for sure.

I’ve read All Quiet on the Western Front from beginning to end the past 3 days. Certainly a depressing piece of literature. I’m genuinely curious how this could possibly have been adapted into a good movie.

After all these years, I'm surprised that Tatsuya Uemura and Masahiko Yuge haven't said anything about AYB:
Speaking of Toaplan, Bit Wave is porting Zero Wing to the PC.

Kamui:
This is hands down, the best Shmup on PC.

Believe me, they know about it lol. Uemura-san signed my Zero Wing with AYB, too.

I plan to visit Japan in 2024. Right now, I'm learning Japanese with the website Duolingo.
Anyone else use that site? It is very handy.
-
@GoldLeaderYeah I use Japanese at work and stuff. No choice, as there are only like 6 people in the entire company that can do English, including myself. I am far from fluent, and there are frequently instances of things that I can understand but not actually read since I don't know the meanings, but this happens to Japanese people as well, so it is actually somewhat normal. I can't talk about like science stuff or political stuff or most other technical things, but I was able to talk about game development stuff with Uemura-san from Toaplan when I met him earlier this year, so I guess I might not be all that bad.

Best way to do it is to go to university or language school classes. 2.5 years in university got me to the point where I can comfortably play games in Japanese with no external translation tools at all and understand 80%~90% of everything, and my proficiency increases every time I play something new.

Doing a 1987 arcade video series-- coming down to Blasteroids and Twin Cobra, which to leave off my list?
-
Kyuukyoku Tiger is an incredible game that literally changed shooting games forever with its introduction of the cycling red/green/blue/yellow powerup icon, as it was the first shooter to ever have that, and now that cycling powerup is common in many shooting games. Twin Cobra, the international version of Kyuukyoku Tiger, is significantly different from Kyuukyoku Tiger, as well, so definitely consider checking out the differences. Kyuukyoku Tiger is way more difficult than Twin Cobra is, though...

Is “Copy and Paste the Whole Damn Thing from Twitter” a course requirement for journalism majors, now?

Second attempt at Sonic 2 brought me to Metropolis Zone Act 2. For fun, I decided to try it on my Nintendo Switch, and thanks to better controls
and savestatesI managed to get to Sky Chase when I decided I’d had enough for the day. Looks like I’ll be beating this game tomorrow!-
Wait until you see the final stage. No rings lol. Metropolis Zone has some awesome music, though. You're making me want to play this game again! Drop dash on Switch Sonic 1 and 2 is amazing, by the way. After Mania, I keep forgetting that drop dash didn't exist aside from in the Sonic 3 beta before it got cut, and I am very glad that they put it in Sonic 1 and 2 on Switch.

I played Sonic 2 seriously for the first time today. I went as far as Mystic Cave Zone Act 2 until I ran out of lives and the one continue. Damn, how am I gonna beat this without saves?
-
You know how the game's physics engine works? If you don't, take a look into it, as the way it works is really cool. Sonic's gameplay, in Sonic 1, 2, CD, 3&K, and Mania, is extremely heavily reliant on the physics engine, which was something perhaps revolutionary at the time in a home console game. Sonic is defined by slopes, and these are the most important parts of the level design, as they are what affect your jump height to a massive degree. With enough speed, which you get from practice, and an upwards slope, you can jump insanely high and far. This is how you master Sonic. Speed is your reward for being good, not something that is or should be given to the player without earning it, and this is why the 2D games have a relatively high skill ceiling for platformers.

I brought a floppy disk to school today to use as a bookmark, partly because I didn’t have much else to use but mostly because I just wanted to. Shocked me to see that absolutely nobody could figure out what it was after closely examining it.
-
Yeah, I have to do some research on the X68000. I do definitely know that the ones with the 3.5 inch floppy drives are best avoided since I believe a lot of the games were not released on 3.5 inch floppy and that the PSUs like to die... although that's not really an issue with the disk drive lol
Actually, there is basically an internal drive thingy that you can use to run games from like an SD card or some other modern storage device, as well, so I guess that's a way to "fix" a faulty disk drive.

A long time ago, I released a game called Hong Kong 97 on the SNES.
