Ooooh. Thanks for that visualization. Well good, that means, for my purposes, this System Changer will be just fine. I don't have the same attachment to Atari as I do Intellivision, so I'm really only interested in collecting a handful of games so I can mess around a little. I have to say, I'm impressed with the few games I've played on Atari. Although the graphics maybe aren't as sophisticated, they do have their own aesthetic, which makes them look appealing.

It looks a little chewed up, but all the contacts are there.

As I mentioned above, pins 5, 7 and 9 are not used, so you don't see the contacts in those holes.

You can try and do a little clean up with a small needle, contact cleaner, a good blast of compressed air, etc.

I would still recommend that you find your meter, or borrow one from a friend, and then confirm that there are no broken wires.  You would need to test between the contacts in those holes and the end of the wires that are attached to the board inside the joystick.  If all the wires are good, then this means that the contacts themselves are not making a good connection to the port on the System Changer.

You can try and clean out the holes with a needle, contact cleaner, a good blast of compressed air, etc, but that is a fair bit of work...  at that point it may be best to go on the hunt for a replacement joystick, or a replacement cable

Thank you. I understand what you're saying, now, about those pins not being active on the 2600 controller. Which is good because that probably means that both controller ports on my System Changer are going to work with a standard 2600 joystick... Provided I find some that are fully functional.

Hard to tell from the picture.

The only way to really test would be with a meter so you can check from the connector to the wire connection point to the board - this will confirm if the wires are OK and if DB9 connector is OK

And then you can check between pins 6 and 8 and when you press the fire button, then the meter will beep at you (or measure 0).

Or you connect your joystick to a known working Atari console (or other compatible device), and then you connect a known working joystick to your System Changer.

I think I have a multimeter in the garage somewhere. It might need a probe.

Pin 9 won't affect the joystick.  It will keep the third paddle from working.

If you have a multimeter check the continuity on the fire button of the joystick itself.  If that fails than repair the joystick.

Thanks mr_me, what is the third paddle? Is that the fire button?

  5. Not sure whether to post this on the INTY boards or on the Atari boards, but here's the deal. I have a very nice looking Intellivision System Changer that seems to work well, aside from one thing! I can't seem to get the "fire" button to work on the lone Atari joystick I purchased to go along with the System Changer.

The fire button does not respond with the controller plugged into EITHER the left or right System Changer port, upon closer inspection, I noticed that the #9 pin is missing from the player 2 controller port. (See attached image). Again, the fire button on my only Atari joystick controller does not function when plugged into either port on the System Changer. That said, could this missing #9 pin in port 2 be to blame?

If I use the Intellivision controllers built into my INT II, the fire buttons all work - on both controllers. Not sure if that is relevant information, but there you go.

Should I bother purchasing another Atari joystick to see if that one works? Or, can someone diagnose the problem based on the above information?

    Thanks!

When I got my ECS last year it was no problem.  Just brought the box in and walked it down to the basement.  Wife didn't say anything.  Thank you The Batchelor for distracting her.

All I gotta do is get the package when it comes. Then down to the basement with the intellivision II
