  1. I'm having the exact same issue with mine (distorted video, sometimes sound, sometimes not) and while testing I noticed my RIOT chip was SUPER hot. Like Soldering-iron, can't-even-touch-it hot. The other chips stay room temperature.

  2. I may have found something. In the course of re-capping it, I was testing the unit and found the large chip that isn't the TIA chip (is this the RIOT chip?) gets REALLY hot. Like, too hot to touch. The TIA and CPU chips don't get hot at all. I'm thinking this isn't normal since if it were they'd have a heat sink on it. Could my problem be I just need a new RIOT chip?

  3. Found a Heavy Sixer for 10 bucks so I thought I might clean it up and see if it works. Attached is what I saw when I hooked it up to the TV. It's tuned to channel 3. There's no channel switch in the back, and channel 2 and 4 don't show anything at all. There's no sound. Tried multiple games with the same result. The console appears to operate. I can start the games and move the characters around, fire, etc. I ordered this cap kit from console5.com: https://console5.com/store/atari-2600-total-refresh-tune-up-cap-kit-new-capacitors-and-more.html and am thinking I should just replace all the components and try again. I also plan on doing the Composite mod to it if I can get it working. I've searched Google for problems like this and haven't found anything. Could it be an issue other than caps and voltage regulator doing this? I'm sort of familiar with electronics and kind of know how to solder, but I'm far from an expert. Does this picture jump out at anyone as what the problem could be? Do I need to replace chips?

Here's a gallery of the tear-down if that helps: https://imgur.com/gallery/v7SkjcA
