I've noticed this, too.  The term "video games" has been stretched to include a multitude of different entertainment products, whose only common trait is that they offer some degree of interactivity.  I'm reminded of the taxonomy suggested by Chris Crawford in his book "Chris Crawford on Game Design" (which I'd highly recommend):

    ccogd.png.c11db061abe3906aef983c35629f885f.png

By his definition, many of these interactive video experiences aren't really video games in the sense that we have always understood the term; they would be better classified as "toys" or "puzzles."  That's not to say that they're "bad" or that there isn't a market for them; it just makes it difficult to discuss video games qua video games, because so many other forms of entertainment are being lumped into the same category.

a while back i remember you posted a quote from jean renoir about how art should never perfectly mirror reality, but should remain separate and distinct within its own abstract parameters in order to fully retain its aesthetic properties... or something to that effect. if you could repost that quote i'd greatly appreciate it. thanks.

I think it would be better if we avoided discussing COVID-19.  Discussing how it is impacting this project is one thing, but if the other COVID-19 threads we've had here are any indication, too many of us are not yet in a place where we can rationally discuss the subject directly, and I don't want it to derail this thread any further.

cool. i'll comply with what you said, not because it's your job to monitor comments, but because you're one of the few people here whose opinion i actually respect.

I think everyone was hoping this would all be over by now... but there are reports of it getting worse in a lot of places.

well no not really. those of us who understand what's really going on recognize that this is only just the beginning, and that it's going to get much, much worse from here on out. Because i guarantee that not a single one of you personally knows anyone that has this thing. the only people who seem to get infected are actors and politicians on television. i wonder why that could be?

p.s.  Cloudy Mountain is up to 3 players simultaneous.  Tried to get 4, but way too crowded on screen.

Players can jump in and out anytime though and other players can revive you after you die (by playing a mini-game on the touch screens!).

It's gonna be a great one!  Should be available on launch I believe.

    physical release?

didn't say you made a copyright claim. i was merely using that as a parallel example.

and rights to free speech are not part of the YouTube use agreement. YouTube is a private company which makes their own content rules and rely on user feedback for policy violations which they, at their sole discretion, enforce. YouTube is not a platform for free speech but instead a consumer oriented video service platform driven by consumer ad dollars.

one of my favorite lines from orwell's 1984 was when winston refers to his wife as a human sountrack, which of course denotes the idea of a lifeless, mindless automaton that simply regurgitates party propaganda without any independent, critical thought or analysis.

Well someone got triggered, make me wonder who is snow flaking here. Anyway you notice I didn't say that about any other of these crap, broken record ramblings of self proclaimed 'experts'. However this one had misleading text in the description which people search for and may be confused by. Sorry if I offended you, by not wanting people to not be confused by misleading video descriptions (which is a terms of service violation on YouTube, btw). How about your friends follow the rules of posting videos to YouTube and I won't have any complaints about them despite the fact a simple, family friendly console is threatening their manhood so much that they have to lash out against it.

with all due respect, both the description and the video itself were clearly satirical, even if they were mean-spirited; so i think those are just excuses that you're coming up with in order to justify your actions, no different than those who like to abuse the copyright system in order to get back at people who disagree with them. either way, it was a pansy move on your part. And, yes... i get extremely triggered when it comes to censorship, especially during this present time in which the bill of rights and all our freedoms are being eviscerated under the pretense of a global health crises.

Reported the video as having misleading text for claiming to be from Tommy Tallarico, the president of Intellivision Entertainment. I HIGHLY suggest you report it too.

are you serious??  see... it's that kind of wimpy, snowflake move that provides fodder and gives credence to all the haters that like to call you all a bunch of tommy kool-air drinkers. like it or not... the guy has a right to his opinion. And he has the right to speak that opinion - and even use satire to express that opinion - regardless of whether or not you find it offensive and get your feelings hurt about it. if you don't like what he has to say, or his obviously satirical approach to communicate his thoughts on the matter, then simply be a man, ignore it, and move on instead of acting like a little gestapo school-girl that likes to rat people out to her teacher. it's like if two guys get in a fist fight and the one that loses calls the cops on the guy that beat him up. no real man with a shred of integrity would ever respect you ever again. sorry dude... but you acted like a total pansy.

... but unfortunately, it only fans the flames even more.  Remember, we're talking about unhinged people who will loudly proclaim that "it is their right" to say whatever they want, but who will respond to any kind of counterargument or disagreement as if it was a "personal attack."  If you go to them and respond directly, they'll claim that "you're just a mob of Kool-Aid drinkers" or that "Tommy is putting you up to it"; if you respond to them here, they'll only say that you're "bringing drama from the outside" or "unfairly attacking them when they're not here to defend themselves."

ad hominem attacks are always used as a smokescreen to divert from the subject matter at hand when you can't counter someone's argument with a lucent, logical rebuttal.

Kids need the room to find themselves. Like everything in life its finding balance and not eliminating one thing or the other

Incorrect. children are like arrows. they need to be pointed in the right direction. if you don't influence them for their good, someone else will influence them for their evil; which means if you simply leave a child to "find themselves" you are setting them up for failure because they will be influenced by voices that only wish to hurt and take advantage of them. the mind of a child is a white canvass that can be dyed any color. you don't want the wrong people imbuing the landscape of their mind with wrong ideas that will lead them on the path of self-destruction.

Absolutely.  I've heard the "socialization" argument before, but to me, that's one of the arguments for home-schooling, not against it.  What do people usually mean by "socialization," anyway?  They mean acquiring the social and behavioral skills to function in the modern world as an independent, autonomous, and productive member of society.  The only way to get those skills is through learning, by observation and imitation, from other people who have already acquired these skills—in other words, adults.  Students in public schools are crammed into rooms all day with other children of roughly commensurate ages, so they don't have the opportunity to acquire very many social skills that they don't already possess, because everyone is at about the same level.  It's an artificial environment that (in my opinion) does more harm than good.

Amen. perfectly stated. i'm gonna write down what you just wrote so i can look at it from time to time. i should probably even print it out and hang it up on my wall.  :-D

Also to get by in this world a lot of it falls back to people skills and you need to grow up around a lot of people to get those skills

i agree with you, but the best way for a child/teenager to develop people skills and learn how to communicate  properly and effectively is to hang out with adults. hanging around a bunch of kids your own age all the time only breeds stupidity and foolishness, and will inevitably always lead to trouble. if you want someone to grow into a mature adult that knows how to handle and carry himself in this world, then there can be no greater, shining, visual model than one's own parents; which is why a child needs to hang out with his/her mother and father as much as possible.

We couldn't afford tutors, so it was either Mom teaching me or me teaching myself.  (She also home-schooled my four younger siblings, including one with special needs, so out of necessity I was usually left to take care of myself, or to help the younger kids.)

well it was definitely the way to go.... having someone that loved you intricately involved in your education as opposed to being taught by cold strangers who are getting paid to care. the reason i asked was because i've always enjoyed reading your posts as you have a very distinct, poetic prose that enables you to communicate and elucidate your thoughts most effectively. i've always thought you were highly educated, and i've been meaning to ask you if you had a degree in either english or journalism. i'm a firm believer that if every mom stayed at home and educated her own children instead of giving them over to the state, then the world would unquestionably be a better place.

An interesting concept! Although, the first thing that came to mind when I saw those little buttons was a potential choking hazard for infants.

then just make sure you're a good parent that's ever vigilant and watchful when it comes to your children. it's an imperfect world; which means it's impossible to create the perfect product that meticulously caters to everyone's little, felt needs.

So  @Tommy Tallarico. I have a question about the stick.on buttons.   Nintendo did something like this for the original ds for an analog stick.  I was wondering if  this will be a major improveimpr.ober that

.im.unsure if any others have done anything like that  outside of soecial case attachments for phones.

i wasn't able to watch the interview and rich seemed to only upload the last two hours so i didn't hear the full disclosure on the controllers. But... i take it you're going to be able to add your own auxiliary buttons upon the screen? and if that's the case, is intellivision going to release some sort of official, specifically designed set of extra buttons that you'll have to purchase as an addendum to the controllers? how will that work?
