Say Steve and Zack. You really want a great AES style controller in your collection. GET THIS!! The HORI Fighting Stick. It might be over $100 bucks for a loose one. But MAN!!! It's that Darn good. Has to be one of the best controllers outside from SNK. HORI makes amazing controllers :)

Thank you all for your contributions to celebrating this awesome 7th anniversary for the best thread on this site. I enjoyed all your contents and it warms my heart that everybody worked hard for this day.

Thank you, Durso, you taught me so much, which I didn't know from before and thank you for helping me grow my collection, without you my collection wouldn't be what it is today.

Thank you all and still happy anniversary

Good to know WRCN. In the meanwhile, have fun with it seeing you have a nicer one in the collection. KOF'98 is considered to be the best in the series for the Neo-Geo.:)

    Anthony.

Thank you, Durso😊, I always try to get the best condition and pay a little extra, get too picky. What about you Durso? Many say 2002 is best, Many say 98 is the best. What about you, which one do you like?

    Thanks Durso

You're welcome WRCN. Glad we were able to take care of the concern and add a better looking KOF 98 to your collection. As for the sun faded version, are you planning to still keep it in the collection to use to play?

    Anthony..

    Hey Durso

I guess it will be hard to sell since it's sun-faded and you know how picky the collectors are. I wasn't originally a collector but even I am picky about conditions man. I guess I can try to sell at a reasonable price, so I buy other games, but I guess it will be a hard task. I have seen sun-faded around the internet and even they are quite expensive. If nobody buys the game, I will have it in my collection. Still good condition 😊👍

    Thanks Durso

So the collection I had 20 years ago was sold to the Neo Store, and the money paid for the band at my wedding.  The band was amazing, and as I still tell my wife to this day with our venue a DJ just wouldn't have cut it (no offense to DJs, many of you are amazing, I just wanted a band, thats all).

Bands don't come cheap so both the Neo Store and I made out well.  That being said, the value of what I sold the whole collection for then and what its worth now?  One cart alone is probably equal now to that I was paid for the whole collection: a mint condition Garou: Mark of the Wolves US AES cart purchased new from SNK USA upon release.

What it's worth now would have paid for the band + their tip I would expect.  It's the only cart I have not added back to my collection today that I owned previously.  Its just not in my budget at this point, and I wouldn't bother with a conversion or a preproduction.

Neo carts and collecting have always been expensive but the prices they are hitting now is unbelievable.

Say, man, bands are that expensive?  But hey, at least you enjoyed and had a great time man, probably worth sacrificing your superb expensive games. Nobody could imagine that the games will end up so valuable, the prices went crazy around 2008, I think. It's not just Neo-Geo, but all the retro games are getting expensive, suddenly everybody wants the games they had in their childhood. Thank you for posting 128kgames, I enjoy them a lot 😊

    Anthony..

Thank you for letting me know and that's a great post 128kgames, enjoyed reading it a lot. That is true, there are so many ways to play Neo-Geo now, that's just crazy. I enjoy playing the games on Raspberry, but collections for the system is more fun. Hopefully jump on MVS one day😁

If you scroll back several posts, I talk about my Neo collection back to when the AES was first launched.  I've owned a Neo Geo AES three times: back in the 90's (sold), late '99/early 2000 (sold) and lastly since about 2003, give or take.  No plans to sell this one, ever.

    Hey 128kgames

Must say you had/have one hell of a collection man, so jealous man. I have read on another forum that people sold their console to get into PS1, Xbox Or financial situations and regretted it later. I guess you have to do what you feel is better. Don't sell it, keep your powerhouse 😊. I am reading your post now how you got the console☺️

AOF2 is a cool game, I did not own a copy until my second Neo Geo collection around 20 years ago.  AOF was my last Neo Geo title I purchased for my original AES; I got AOF back in '93 when it first came out, being the first title to take things to another level in my opinion.  I wish I had kept that Neo for a few more years until AOF2 and other titles like it came out.

    Hey 128kgames

Thank you for sharing your story, that's so great. Wonder how it was back in the days to purchase the games. It is always awesome to hear stories about this console when it was available, it makes me jealous why I didn't purchase it when the games were available, but I was only a baby back in 1993. It is a cool game, but very hard, overall a game you can enjoy. So what happened to your collection? Did you sell it? It is always cool to talk to people who owned it back in the days😊

    Thanks, 128kgames

Hi all! I'm Mark. Anthony, who started this thread, gave me a very warm invite to ask the community here for help.

Briefly, my story is I lucked into winning a Neo Geo AES unit on a game show in 1991 (yes really!), and I played it a ton for a few years, but then it was stored in my parents' basement for a good ~25 years. I retrieved it last year, along with two controllers and three games (just missing the fourth game, Fatal Fury). Everything was rather dusty, but I cleaned it all up, inside and out.

When giving it a power-on attempt, the video appeared mangled when I tested any of the three games. I searched online a bit and found that a decent first line of attack is to clean the contacts of both the cartridge slot and the carts. So I did that with IPA and/or contact cleaner (I can't quite remember if I used the contact cleaner, but I'm leaning towards I did). Anyway whatever I did, there was no more crap coming off it anymore. I used the credit card technique to clean directly inside the slot, btw.

Unfortunately the video problem still remains.

In case this is useful info - my board is labeled "NEO-AES" and it is the kind that has the "video cleaner" daughter board.

So that's where I'm at! Any suggestions on next steps would be very appreciated. I'd be happy to take photos of the video and/or hardware if it would help any. Also I wish I could say I flipped through more than a few pages in this thread for any existing info, but at 1000+ pages it's quite intimidating!

One last thing - I did find a single photo I took of the AES unit after opening the case which I'm attaching now. This was just before I brought out the Q-tips and IPA. (I was surprised it looked so clean off the bat, and took this to show my friend.)

Thanks so much and happy to be joining this thread!

Welcome to the forum, Mark, and thank you, Anthony, for letting me know about this post. You won this back in 1991, that's just awesome, wonder how it was to own the home system back then 🤔. I was just a baby back then. Sorry, I don't know anything about repairing consoles, so I can't help you. Hopefully, some masters or experienced fans will help you.

It will be fine in the end. I am looking forward to getting this console back to life.

    Thank you, Mark and Anthony

Hey it's WRCN, thank you for posting here Durso, I appreciate it very much, been collecting Neo - Geo for a long time now, and hopefully, it grows bigger one day. Some other Samurai Shodown and The King of Fighter games are safe and secured in the closed with bubble wrap, so in case something happens, they don't get damaged. You have to do what you have to do when kids come to visit you

Again, thank you very much for posting, and damn man, people here have a lot of great collection. Keep going guys 🙏☺️

Awesome WRCN. Glad you want to go the Japanese Mark of the Wolves direction. A better game in my choice of selections, and highly regarded by fans across the board.

Yeah, those book bins in black are strong plastic. The white cardboard versions are fine, but those are just bare basic that I have and want easy access to them to play my games. If you want something that's going to be stored for quite sometime, then the black plastic versions is the best choice bro.

Glad to give a helping hand WRCN come by anytime bro. You're alwas welcome to post. ;-)

    Anthony..

    Hi Durso

I still can't believe the gameplay and graphics from Fatal Fury 1 to MOTW, can't believe it's from the same console. Yeah, the Japanese and European version is the same thing, I don't think about selling them later, I will keep and take care of my game. I would have bought many games when I had the chance but I am collecting Vita games too, so it became expensive for me.

I bought the normal boxes, but I need to get the hard plastic ones since I will store them for a long time, and afraid something fell on them and destroy my games and consoles.

Thanks, Durso, always a pleasure to talk to you and getting advice from you :)

Yeah, the thing with the converted carts is that even if they use real parts, they're still fake, and I don't want to put something into my Neo Geo if I'm not sure how good the build quality is since bad cart voltage could potentially cause some damage. The Darksoft cart is a good quality cart, but my Darksoft cart arrived broken, so I had to send it back. Hopefully I get a replacement soon. I've been thinking about getting one of those MVS to AES converters as well, but I've heard that sometimes they are not so great, so now I may just use the Darksoft cart and be done with it.

Ahhh, that sucks man, I hope you get a new cart soon. Every human is different, some likes all the game in one cart, some people likes to collect the different carts. I like to chase down and game and want to feel that tangible game. I am thinking of going the MVS route when I have bought the most affordable games because I would like to have the games I can't afford AES.

If you look online, some websites are selling CMVS, they are a little bit expensive but they will be more affordable in the long run.

    What do you think?

  16. 2 hours ago, Steven Pendleton said:

What are everyone's thoughts on MVS -> AES converted games? I mean, the ROM is literally the same on both AES and MVS versions of games, and from what I understand, the AES basically just has what is essentially built-in DIP switch settings to set the ROM to AES mode.

Anyway, I see these converts on ebay a lot and I have mixed feelings about them. Obviously the important stuff is (maybe) real, but I'm not sure about the carts and of course the labels and most likely boxes/manuals/etc. are likely fakes, I'm assuming, and I also suppose that there's not much preventing people from just making a 100% fake game and calling it a converted game instead of a fake. Not sure if anyone has tried these or anything, but I am curious.

Still, I'll probably have a new Darksoft cart here pretty soon anyway..

    Hey Pendleton

I have been collecting Neo Geo for years but I am no expert, my knowledge is very limited, but from what I hear from collectors is converted games have little to no value, it's just not like the real thing. If a game is too expensive for me, I am thinking of going MVS route with AES adapter. Darksoft cart over converted games any day.

I hope somebody here, such as Anthony can help you better than me, since he has better knowledge.

    Hi WRCN,

Oh wow. That's a tough choice to choose between SS5S or MOTW. Out of the 2 being both for the last in the series for the Neo-Geo, I would go with Mark of the Wolves seeing that is such an outstanding game. Sadly, both games go for good money on the 2nd hand market these days, but MOTW is my choice of of the pair. ;-)

Nice! 3 or 4 AES units in your pad. Awesome bro. The more, the merrier as i always say. Especially with the Neo-Geo. ;-)

Now when it comes to storage, they do have other containers that are stronger and weather proof. I use these white comic cardboard versions because they are exact fit for the AES and are easy access since I purchased them locally (like 1 street block away from me) . Maybe you'll like this option instead.

    Anthony...

    Hey Anthony

Thank you for your advice, I think I will go for MOTW, the Japanese version of course, then save some money and buy SSVS, the Japanese version again, because they have not a that bad price. £1000 for MOTW, and around £2000 for SSVS so I am saving money now.

Yeah, I bought the consoles when the price was good and not messed up like now, got many games for £50 and stuff. I remember one collector was selling his everything Neo Geo so he could focus on Dreamcast, he offered me Metal Slug 3 for £1000, Metal Slug 4 for £800. I told him you must be crazy, look at the prices now, my biggest regret ever in my life.

To the storage, yeah Anthony, I will take a trip to the store now to check out what they have, the book bin seems strong, so my consoles and games don't get crushed, not a bad idea there Anthony l. That's a much better option.

As always thanks again Anthony, it's always a pleasure to talk to you bro, thank you for everything, and I really appreciate your help.

    Hi WRCN,

Good to see you back on with us bro. I understand that you would like to store away your Neo-Geo products. I feel the same way with relatives and their children coming snooping around my room. So I lock the doors to be safe. I hate to be that way, but I have a lot of stuff that it taken me a while to collect, and I don't have a real bond with these family members.

For the game consoles, I use literature mailing boxes. They all come in different shapes and sizes, but here a sample for what I use for the consoles like the AES

    11 1/8 x 8 3/4 x 2" White Literature Mailers S-273

Now for storing games. I actually use comic book boxes to store my AES titles. My NGDEVTEAM games are in a separate box, and have them all in there. Here's a pic o what I mean bro.

    31CRDDegJhL._AC_.jpg

Hope this helps you WCRN. Feel free to ask any more questions as much as you like. Will be here to help you. ;-)

    Anthony...

    Thanks Durso

I really appreciate the help, yeah you are right, I should go and grab boxes like that. You know it is expensive stuff, so can't let the stuff be broken. I have 3 - 4 AES consoles laying around, so wilI l be packaging tomorrow.

That sucks man, I feel like that too, I don't have a strong bond with my relatives either like cousins and stuff, but I feel like they don't like me but they like my stuff. ” wow, let me have this AES man, you have 2 - 3 more, please”. Hell no, been working overtime to afford this stuff, no way ever. Wonder who has a good relationship with their family members haha?

I am thinking to buy Samurai Shodown V Special and MOTW since they are my favourite games on Neo Geo. Do you have any idea how and what I should I buy? Things to look for?

Thanks for the help, appreciate it very much :)

  19. Hey guys

I hope you all are doing well.

Today is a sad day, as I am packing up all my Neo Geo home consoles and will store them in my closet since I feel it not safe to display them when I have guests and family and they bring their kids with them and lately I don't game that much either.

Do you guys have any advise on how I should store my consoles? Is there anything I should be aware of?

Don't worry guys, I am still a Neo Geo guy and still collect games :)

Thank you all and have a nice day

Now for an MVS unit, have you tried to contact James at Jamma Nation X? He's well known in the Neo-Geo community and can customize you a great unit to your preference. Here's the link to his Twitter account if you like bro. Mention Anthony from the Neo-Geo thread on Atariage. He knows who i am since I forwaerd many to him.

Also, have you tried the units on Aliexpress. They use actual Neo-Geo boards and at a good price too.

I will contact James as soon as possible, and mention you, just need to get some copies of MVS games.:). I almost bought Metal Slug 3, EU/US version with my savings, but people at neo-geo.com advised me to go MVS route since it's more affordable :). Better to snag some copies while they are affordable before they go through the roof 😜. Thanks Durso 😊

Neo-Geo home carts and the Playstation Vita are the only systems I collect for, and been doing it for a long time. But I am moving to MVS soon since it is more affordable.

I will try to post much SNK related material here as I can, and Durso, thank you for everything bro, I have seen your posts on Twitter and YouTube, you have contributed a lot to the SNK community. Thank you my friend ☺️☺️
