  1. The Arduino solution is a lot cheaper. I'm not great with a soldering iron so I bought an Arduino board with the pins already installed. Then used jumpers to the keyboard cable. I can send a picture of the setup after I get back from Vacation in about 1 week. I bought a dual joystick to usb converter for the 8-bit project that I did. I was going to try it on the ST but dropped it and the Micro USB on the converter broke off of the board. I may try to reattach it but my soldering skills aren't great. I believe it was the I-code converter. I'm also have an casing from an Atari mouse that I want to put a modern WIFI USB mouse in it.

  3. I did make a converter using the Leonardo for the ST keyboard. It works great. I should still have the file for flashing the Arduino if you need it. Also made a converter for my Atari 800XL. That was harder since it uses a mylar keyboard strip going to an odd size connector on the motherboard. I ended up cutting the connector off of a dead motherboard. A few months later I saw a post about someone that had the correct connector end.
  4. In the second to last picture you'll see a Component to HDMI converter next to the power supply. They work quite well for converting the signal. I bought one about two years ago for less than $15.00

  6. Back in the the late 90's our local computer club ran a MidiMaze event at Gencon in Milwaukee. Atari would send us the STs and we'd run the games splitting the proceeds with GenCon. We would have two rings of 16 machines running the whole time that the show was going on and usually had all 32 seats taken. It was a fun time trying to keep all of those machines connected and running throughout the show.
  7. I'm interested in the ASCI2SD also. Did you get it already and if so, how do you like it? Also, where is masteries? Do you have a web link for them. I have an ancient Hard drive box that I used for my Atari ST. It's a 4 bay box that originally came with a 105mb hard drive and an ICD ADSCI board. Over time I added a Syquest 105mb removable drive, CD-Rom drive and a Tape backup drive. Needless to say the box is huge and I don't really have the room for it any more. A small box on the back of the machine would be much better and I won't have to worry about the SCSI drives dying.

  9. I decided to reconnect everything after having pushed down all of the chips. The XL is working again. Not sure if that was it or if I might have not connected the keyboard ribbon cable tight enough earlier. I did have the keyboard off since using it last to check out another project (put a mini-PC in an Atari case). That could have been the problem all along. Thanks to everyone for all of the suggestions.

  11. C2 actually looks good. The picture seemed to have a shadow that made it look bad. I have a Video cable with composite, sound and two other RCA plugs (probably chroma and luma). I've checked the pinouts and am using the correct ones. I'll try reseating the chips and give it another go. I'll also double check the motherboard connection. I remember swapping out the motherboard to test another project that I was working on. I do have another dead 800XL board that I can swap chips with if needed. Any idea which ones should be swapped out first?
  12. The cable on the original Atari color and monochrome monitors had different pinouts to the monitor. Years ago I had a multisync monitor and built a cable with a switch in it the allow me to use either the color pinout or the monochrome pinout. This still works. I believe there were 3 or 4 pins that needed to be switched. I don't have the multisync monitor any more but have used the cable with a VGA capable monitor or a VGA to HDMI converter. If you have an old Atari monitor cable you could cut it in half and add a VGA plug to each end with one set-up for color and the other for mono.
  13. Sorry for the delay. I was sucked in to a Campaign in my favorite old game (Panzer General for the PC). I did check and am getting power to the backside of the power plug. I also checked the switch and it appears to be working. When in the on position it is getting power, when off it isn't. Here are a couple of shots of the motherboard.
  14. I've seen lots of pictures with the 1224 monitor on top of the Mega case. You could look at getting an inexpensive TV/Printer stand and put the Mega under it and the monitor on top.
  15. I'll try and check out the switch and make sure that the socket on the computer hasn't gone bad. Beyond that I don't have much experience. I did open it up and I don't see any obviously bad caps. At least I have the XEGS to use for trouble shooting the power supply and other peripherals that I am using.
  16. If you have an extra monitor cable it isn't too hard to make an ST to VGA monochrome cable. The high resolution will work with a standard monitor that has a VGA input. The older 4/4 screens work better since they maintain the proper height to width ratio. Years ago I had a multiscan VGA monitor that would sync down to the low/medium color settings. I built a switchbox that would let me switch between the two. Now I use it with a VGA to HDMI converter that upscales the low/medium signal to standard HDMI output.
  17. I haven't had my trusty 800XL out for about a year now. Plugged it in and it appears to be dead. No power light and nothing on the screen. I tried it with both a cartridge in the slot and with a floppy drive hooked up. It's not the power supply since my XEGS starts up just fine (the PS is the tan type that looks like it's made for the XL series). Any thoughts on what I should check first? I don't have an oscilloscope but do have a multimeter. The XL does have the Rambo 256meg upgrade but is stock otherwise.
  18. Haven't seen this converter but it should work. I was lucky and bought a cheap VGS to HDMI converter a couple of years ago that syncs from 15kHz to standard HDMI. It was about $16.00. Here's that link unfortunately it's no longer in stock. In the comments/questions section someone had mentioned that it worked with Atari ST computers. You would need a Atari to VGA cable to use it. Make sure that you get the one that has a switch to go between the color and monochrome settings.   19. Some composite cables use a different color coding for the plugs. On my cable it's the black lead that actually has the composite signal out.
  20. I had mentioned in another thread that not tightening the screws all of the way helped get my mylar replacement working. Having the screws all of the way tight must have put the mylar connectors too close together.
  21. What is the RGB connector going into the scandoubler? If it is a VGA type connector you could probably make a cable using either an old Atari video cable or find the correct plug. I used an old atari cable and cut it in half. I added a VGA plug to the bare end with the pinout to the Color signals. It won't work with a standard PC monitor (unless you find one that will sync down to the 15Khz. I have mine going to a VGA to HDMI box that upscales it to HDMI. I used the other end of the cable to make a Mono cable which will connect directly to a PC VGA monitor.
  22. I found that if I tightened the screws to the keyboard too tightly that I would start to get weird multiple key errors like that. If you loosened them and retightened them that could be the cause. I finally figured it out by trial and error.

  24. I didn't learn about the fact that the keyboard connectors were available at the time. I just followed that way that the other person had done the project. What type of board did you use that fit the case? I kept the little BMax computer whole since I also can put it in the ST case that I did the same type of keyboard trick with. There is a Youtube video up there of someone that used an Arduino board to build a converter for the XE. Just watched it yesterday. Search on Atari keyboard to USB.
  25. I'm working on the same type of project on an 800XL. I used an Arduino board to do the conversion. I'm not sure if the keyboard connector is the same on the XE line. Here is the link to the Youtube from DJ Sures that shows his modification of a 600XL into a RetroPi gaming system. I used his coding for the Arduino board. Here is a picture of my 800XL so far. The top is flipped upside-down above the main body. I cut the keyboard connector off of a dead motherboard for the project. The yellow device is a Joystick adapter that I'll be hooking up to new joystick connectors on the case. The computer is a little BMax micro PC (about $135.00). I have the BMax locked in place with 3 screw in grommits.
