Sam Tramiel interview - Next Generation 1995
ArcadeAction replied to kevincal's topic in Atari Jaguar
Very nice read, many thanks for posting! I had never heard of Sam Tramiel before, so I googled a little bit and came across this link, called "The 25 dumbest moments in gaming", where they sadly make fun of this interview. Click here for this article -
The magazine is run by its new publisher for a few more months now. What do you guys think of the magazine now? I am really interested in it, I really miss the old webshop where you could order back-issues with a creditcard, as RetroGamer seems not te be available in my country (Holland).. a real shame! Do they still focus mostly on software? That's a shame, as I am also very interested in the hardware of old consoles and homecomputers.

I just replaced my TV-cable connection with the 7800 and it worked fine! This will be a fun night!
-
Thanks, I'm quite sure I will It arrived today, the unit looks very new. I am not 100% sure, but I think I do not have the proper equipment to connect it to my TV yet though, so it will probably take a little while before I can test the unit! I should have read the 7800 FAQ earlier Best regards, Vincent
-
Oops, I missed that obviously. Is it correct that this multicart is only available in NTSC-format? Best regards, Vincent
-
Completely logical, considering the frequency differences.. it was foolish of me to suggest a PAL unit could output a NTSC signal, it's not a DVD player after all I assume this accounts to NTSC-2600 carts as well. I will not risk buying NTSC versions of any game then. In my country, Holland, 7800 games seem quite uncommon, but I have not really searched that long yet. I will when I receive my 7800 console (which was sent to me today according to the shopowner ). Best regards, Vincent

Does anyone know the C64 "Boomerang" game?
ArcadeAction posted a topic in Classic Console Discussion
Hello, Maybe I should ask this on a dedicated C64 forum, but I'm not into that scene, so I'll first try it in this topic! Years ago I've played a simple, obscure little 16-color EGA shareware game on my 386 computer called "Boomerang". According to its readme file, it was developed in 1991 by Jerry Hsu of J/H Enterprises. But according to the same readme file he borrowed the idea and concept of a Commedore-64 game with the same name (Boomerang) which was developed by Kevin Dixon. I was wondering if anyone was familiair with this little game? The concept is very simple (it wouldn't surprise me if there are tons of clones and very similair games out there). You have a single screen where two players are placed, player one is red and player two is blue (or vice-versa, can't remember). Both players can fire a boomrang and control it while it has not touched a wall/brick. Once the boomerang hits the other player, he/she loses a life. This continues until one player lost all his/her lives. The player must get his boomerang back, because there the player only has one boomerang. On the mainmenu, the user could choose a few different 'mazes' that would add various bricks to the screen, which made the game a lot funnier. The readme file of the PC shareware game states that the original C64-version contained a lot of bugs. However, to be fair, the PC version did not function correctly on every PC I've tried the game on, mainly because not every PC seemed to be able to read multiple keypresses that occur at the same time (very important when two players are on the same keyboard). The reason I am asking about this game, is because I am seriously considering to port this little game to the NES/Famicom as my first homebrew game. I already did a simple demo to teach myself 6502 and NES PPU programming and I think I am ready to start a first serious little game. I was wondering if anyone was familiar with this game and have tips, hints, do's or don'ts, etc. to make a fun little 2-player game. I still have the PC version on my harddrive, so I could post screenshots if desired Thanks for any input, Vincent -
I'd get a Formation Z machine from Jaleco (also released by Williams as Aeroboto). I've never played the original arcade machine, but I fell in love with the Famicom-conversion that was on a pirate 32-in-1 cart that came with my famiclone. Once I learned that this was a port of an arcade machine, I searched and found the MAME ROM. Maybe I like it so much because I always was a huge fan of the Transformers

I FULLY agree! I would really love to play this game on my 7800 (should arrive soon). Someone already said on this on this thread that this game is so 'pure', I fully agree to that. If you decide to release this on a cart, you can put me on the will-definitely-order list.

I was wondering (because I'm getting a PAL 7800, I live in Europe): and the other way around? Will NTSC games work in an original, unmodified PAL console? (I have a TV that should support NTSC signals) Best regards, Vincent

I've ordered a 7800 today from a Dutch Atari specialised shop. The shopowner claimed they tested the unit. As I'm not having too much cash laying around, I've only ordered two games with it: Donkey Kong Jr and Pool Position 2. Of course when I receive the unit and I can get it to work, I will try to retrieve more games. This is my first real own Atari console (altough I also own the PAL version of the first Flashback unit). Right now I am working on my first NES mini-game (I've made a simple demo earlier to teach myself NES programming). I hope I'll be able to develop a mini-game for the 7800 also somewhere in the future. Can't wait to receive and play the 7800!

I'm looking forward to receiving my GP2X, according to a mail I got from gp2x.co.uk it will be shipped to me Monday. When I received it and played with it, I will write down my impressions here.

Latest crappy "classic" collections. Vomitous.
ArcadeAction replied to Flojomojo's topic in Modern Console Discussion
At first I didn't like MAT 3 either... now I regulary play Offroad Thunder (or whatever it is called). I also like the original Offroad games, but I'd rather play them with huge wheels instead of a joypad. I still can't believe they released PitFighter on MAT2 on PS2 the way they did... It's really unplayable (but I must add I never played the original) -
Beast Wars games for PSOne?
ArcadeAction replied to ArcadeAction's topic in Classic Console Discussion
It is a swallow game indeed. I never was a huge fan of 3D platform games. But I thought Transformers was nicely done, especially the graphics (it was my first PS2-game btw...). I just love being able to control Optimus Prime , being able to transform in vehicle mode and driving, huge worlds, etc. There are a lot of weak points though (a lot of the same enemies, which as far as I know, do not exist in the series at all). It would have been nice if it was based on the classic series instead of Armada though, but oh well... -
Hi, Has anyone played any of the two Beast Wars games on the original Playstation? As I'm quite a big Transformers fan (I love the Atari PS2 game, but only with Action Replay MAX turned on, because otherwise I suck at it) I am looking for PAL versions of these games. I know the BeastWars games did get bad reviews at the time, but wondered if anyone can share their experience with any of them? As far as I know a fighting game was released (BW Transmetals) and a platformer (BW Transformers). Would be nice to have them in my collection. Does anyone know whether those games were released in Europe at all? Best regards, Vincent

Today I've picked up this one (Sega Classics). I absolutely love it. One huge disappointment was however that the European version does NOT have "Alien Syndrome" on it (and no replacement for it either), so we Europeans get "only" 9 games. I have only two words for this: "Sega, why?!?!" I love Outrun though and I also liked Golden Axe (I have never played the original version though...). This is one of my favourite compilations for the PS2 (I own quite a lot: MAT 1-3, Atari Anthology, Activision Anthology, Taito Legends, Sonic Gems). -
That's a nice collection! I'd love to see some screenshots of Rise Of The Dragon.. I absolutely LOVED that game on the PC, one of my favourite adventures of all time and am really wondering how the SegaCD version looks.. I could never find any screenshots on the 'net.... Enjoy your games

Sega Master System gane index?
ArcadeAction replied to ozatariprincess's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I'd think http://www.smspower.org/ is a great site for the Sega Master System. I don't know of other sites. -
(uk) Retro Gamer magazine bankrupt?
ArcadeAction replied to thx1138's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Have you guys seen the message on www.livepublishing.co.uk ? See http://www.livepublishing.co.uk -
See www.nesdev.com . I am busy on my second project to learn 6502 (NES) Assembly, but it will take a while before I'd be able to write real games.

Hello, I read that the Action Replay Max for the PS2 contains a emulator for playing Sega Genesis/Megadrive ROMs. I can't find much information about it though. Does anybody know if it is any good? Anybody has experience with it? Altough I'd prefer 'the real thing', it could be handy to play hard to obtain titles. Best regards, Vincent

Hello, I own a standard FamiClone (PAL version), maybe some European readers will recognize the Arcade Action from the TV Commercials (for the Dutch readers: yep, this is the Tell Sell one ). I have some PAL NES games from my brother and I'd really love to play those games. Sadly our NES died many years ago (the well known blinking screen error due to faulty connectors), but I don't really want to buy a second-hand NES only to find out that it needs fixing too. I wondered if anybody has experience with playing original NES cartridges on a FamiClone with a NES-to-FamiCom convertor? Is this possible at all? Best regards, Vincent

Hi, The DreamGear TV pads use, as far as I know, the classic NES-On-A-Chip chips, but I believe they contain only (quite new) legal games, so they do not contain any classic hits like Super Mario Bros, etc, but only non-Nintendo-licensed new 8-bit games. See DreamGear website for a bit more info. They mainly release accessoires for consoles like joypads for the PS2, XBOX, etc. Btw, see Shtree's FamiClones website for probably the biggest list/pictures of unlicensed, pirated FamiClones like the SuperJoy.

Hello there, This is my first (but hopefully not the last ) message on the AtariAge forum. I'ven been a quite regular reader for some weeks now. I do not have any Atari equipment myself, apart of the Flashback 1, but I always was a big fan of the 2600 and 8-bit game consoles in general. I am learning NES 8-bit programming right now and my first (simple) test ROM is more or less in development (still lots to find out, though). I really would love to move on to 2600 programming after I have experience with the NES, but first things first. However, now to switch to on-topic mode I've had quite a hard time obtaining the Flashback console in my home country Holland. None of the big stores that I visited sold it (but most of them did sell those TV joysticks), but luckily I found it after all at a very small shop in Holland (Quite interesting to see that the European version of the box and console itself do not mention the '7800' at all, it is only briefly mentioned in the manual). Is it known yet whether the FlashBack 2 will be released in Europe (and hopefully Holland too)? If so, will distribution in Europe be similair to the first version? Thanks for your time! (And my apologies for my (somtimes) poor English). Best regards, Vincent
